Web4Print enables you to create documents containing variable content. This content can include text, images, background colours, text colours s The Web4Print Client facilitates the produc- and fonts. tion of document templates with pre-defined When you have finished defining the variable conand/or user defined components that can be tent you send the master document to a specific edited using a standard web browser. customer’s account on the Web4Print server. EPS files and other image file formats (TIFF, JPEG, GIF, BMP) can be used as non-variable images or as image variations that can be selected by the customer in the web-interface for the document. PDF files cannot be imported directly, but can be saved as EPS files before being imported into Web4Print. s Text can be typed directly or copied from Windows applications and pasted into the Web4Print document. 3 Web4Print • Template Creating Variable names and Variants Web4Print enables you to select text, pictures and colours that can be varied from one document to another. Variable text can be many paragraphs, a single paragraph or just part of a paragraph. Each text variable can also have a list of variable fonts and colours associated with it. s Select the text, images and colours that you want to make variable and give each variable component a name. s Define variants for each variable name if required. s By default, variables will expect free format text to be entered by your customer, or images to be uploaded. Variants (Variations) will instead present your customer with a list of text items, colours or images to choose from. 4 Web4Print • Template ‘Chaining’ Variants together Variable fields defined as variants can be chained (or linked) to other variable fields. This means that changes in connected variables are made automatically. For example: s Your customer selects the `Headline’ variation from a drop-down menu in the web interface. s The `Headline’, `Body text’ and `Image’ variations, which are linked together, are automatically used in the document. 5 Web4Print • Template Some of the Advanced Functions s Copy fit to frame s Conditional text. s Size to Fit. Headline fit. s Image specific attributes. Scaling and position can be changed for each image `variation’ individually. s Fit text to frame and Fit frame to text with sophisticated level control. s Tie frame(s) to other frame(s). Allows for complex rule based re-design of page layouts depending on customer choices or input. s Text flow. Flow text from frame to frame anywhere in a document. s Automatic balance columns. s Automatically repeat text variations anywhere in the document. s Fit frame to image. Frames can be scaled to chosen or uploaded image size. s Fit page to frame boundaries. Variable page size depending on text input or image selection in web interface. s View variants and chains in place. Variations and chains can be selected/viewed in place on the page(s) during template creation. 6 Web4Print • Web Interface Automatic Web Interface When all the variable data has been defined the Web4Print software generates an XML instance describing the variable data defined in the template. The Print Supplier is able to preview the resulting HTML form on his local machine using the XSLT engine built into Web4Print. The installation provides a default XSLT template but this can be replaced with a User-defined template to change the appearance of the web page that is generated by Web4Print (this would typically be used to make the web page generated by Web4Print appear as though it is an integral part of the Print Supplier’s web site). The current implementation supports HTML input data types which correspond with Web4Print variable data types: text area, text fields, drop-down menus for variations and/or fonts, and special choosers for images and colours built with Javascript. 7 Web4Print • Order Options Order Options for the Template Order options for the template can be specified by using the order options dialogue in Web4Print. 20 options for your customer can be specified, either as choices from a drop-down menu or as free text areas. 8 Web4Print • Web4Print Server The Web4Print Server has two distinct modes of operation: Print Supplier Mode: User Mode: In this mode the server is accessed by the Print Sup- In this mode the server is accessed by the Customer plier (you) in order to maintain User accounts and and used to create, preview and produce jobs made available to them by the Print Supplier (you). publish W4P templates for those User accounts. The Print Supplier creates a User account defining a User name and Password for the customer. The Print Supplier installs Web4Print templates (jobs created with the Web4Print Client) and makes them available to the User account. The server extracts the data from the Web4Print package and places it into a location accessible by the Customer. During the processing of these Web4Print packages, the XML stream describing the variable components is extracted and used to create the HTML form which is presented to the Customer. The HTML form is created using an XSLT template located in the relevant Customers workspace. It is possible to use a custom XSLT template which allows the creation of a HTML form tailored to the Customers specific requirement. The Web4Print server uses a user name and password defined by the Print Supplier to authenticate the Customer and present him with the list of available jobs. The Customer can choose the job and fill in the corresponding HTML form. The server sends the variable data from the form to the backend composition engine as an XML stream. It is possible to achieve the same result using a database or any other data source capable of presenting data in the above format — requires 3B2Online server. The server also creates a control file where the type of output, colour, input file names etc. are specified. The composition engine then parses the control file and loads the XML data stream into the specified template. The variable data i.d. tags of the XML The final high resolution output is placed into a spe- stream are used to identify the location of the data to cial holding area for download and the Print Sup- be replaced and the composition engine then places plier is notified. Alternatively, the print-ready file the Customer supplied data in these locations. can be automatically emailed to the Print Supplier. The resulting Web4Print document is formatted producing a PDF preview available to the Customer for proofing. This process can be repeated any number of times until the proof is considered to be satisfactory. The final output in the format defined by the Print Supplier (see next page) is produced and placed on the Web4Print Server or automatically forwarded via email to the Print Supplier. 9 Web4Print • Web4Print ASP Server ASP Server: Web4Print ASP (Application Service Provider) Web4Print ASP has an innovative and very simple pricing structure. The finished high resolution pages are output by you locally from Web4Print as PostScript, PDF, TIFF or EPS files. You can make multiple copies of these files if you Costs start from a monthly licence fee of €150 wish. (including first 10 finished pages) + €5.00 per finished page produced. There is no reprint charge. Other pricing models are available based on volume of use. You pay for the service as you use it. PDF proofs are free. There are no upfront/set-up costs or hidden charges. You are only charged for final production pages that are ordered and generated by the Web4Print web server. 10 Web4Print • Administration Workflow Administration All workflow features needed to create new customer accounts, log-in details, preview and order statistics etc are included in the software. 11 Web4Print • Customer Web Interface Web Browser Your Customer connects to the template and customises the document. PDF proof The PDF proof is returned in seconds. Order Your customer places the Print Order. 12 Web4Print • Output Output from Web4Print You connect to the Web4Print server and download the customised production document. The ordered production document is a standard Web4Print document. Images are relinked to the high-res images on your local PC or network. You may make final edits if needed, (e.g. checking hyphenation points or spelling errors by your customer) and then output the job as PostScript, PDF, TIFF or EPSF for production or inclusion in other documents. s PostScript, PDF, EPSF, DCS, TIFF, GIF. s Spot, Process or Process and Spot colour separations. s Overprint options for Spot, Process and Process + Spot colour separations. s Colour bars, guides, registration and cropmarks. s Spot separation and palette support of imported EPS files. s Global Black overprint 13 Web4Print • Fonts and SmartFonts TrueType and Type 1 Fonts Any TrueType font installed on the PC can be used in Web4Print. PostScript fonts (type 1 and 3) have to be converted to Web4Print vector format. The Web4Print character display uses the printerfont outlines for display on screen. Therefore the screen display shows exactly what is printed at output time and the Zoom can be used up to Whatever font format is used in the Web4Print job, 9999%. ALL fonts are automatically converted to PostScript Type 1 at output time. (Output to PostScript, EPS, DCS and PDF). Fonts are embedded in the Web4Print package file that is sent to the server. This ensures that the proper fonts are available for the PDF proof file sent to your customer. SmartFonts The advantage to using SmartFonts is automatic perfectly spaced text and headlines. With SmartFonts you lose none of the functionality of Web4Print, and you can have other typefaces from other sources running parallel with SmartFonts. In automated publishing situations, when pages and documents are created or customised unattended on a server (e.g. 3B2Online or Web4Print) SmartFonts are a requirement for consistent automatic high quality character spacing in headlines and body text.
