Patriot Day 1:
Summarization
A summary is a shortened version of a passage. In a summary, you must give the
main ideas and major details, but leave out the minor, or nonessential, details.
Writing summaries is an important skill for a college student because you will have to research
information for essays and reports. You must read the information from several sources and
summarize it in your own words. If you just copy what someone else has written, you can be
penalized for plagiarism.
Example:
Read the passage below. Then, close the window and write a summary without referring back to the
passage. Imagine that a friend asks you what the passage was about and you have to tell him the
information quickly. You will have to summarize the passage in your own words. You can study a
sample of a summary after the passage.
The Renaissance arose from several sources. The culture of the late Middle Ages was one
major tributary; another was an intensified interest in the literature of ancient Greece and Rome.
However, the Renaissance did not come about only from renewed interest in the past. Voyages of
exploration provided new information and new stimuli for writers and artists. A growing interest
in science directed attention to the natural world and suggested new interpretations of observable
phenomena. Capitalistic economic activity supplied the wealth needed to support the
achievements of thinkers and artists.
For several reasons, the Renaissance developed first in Italy and then spread from there to
other regions of Europe. Trade remained important in Italy, which gave birth to early modern
capitalism, and furnished the material resources for cultural development. Less feudal than
northern Europe, Italy enjoyed renewed vigor in its urban centers in the wake of the Crusades.
Political developments fostered growth of independent city-states, and prominent commercial
cities like Genoa, Venice, and Milan competed with one another in cultural as well as
commercial affairs. There emerged an affluent, middle/upper class with the leisure for education
and a sense of political responsibility. Such individuals sought models of civic duty, social
responsibility, and governmental values. The urbanized, sophisticated world of ancient Greece
and Rome provided just such models in an extensive body of literature and art.
—World History: Volume II: Since 1500
Sample Summary:
The Renaissance was influenced not only by the culture of ancient civilizations but also by the
new discoveries of explorers and scientists. It was a time when artists and philosophers flourished as
more money was available to commission their works. Italy was the birthplace of the Renaissance.
In its thriving urban centers, a new class of wealthy citizens had the luxury to promote education and
attempted to imitate the civic-mindedness of ancient Greece and Rome.

Thousands of followers of Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid rioted Tuesday, attacking churches
and buildings that belonged to political rivals. This occurred on the eve of a Parliament meeting that was
expected to start an impeachment bid. This bid would result in legal charges being brought against Wahid.
Police fired warning shots to break up angry mobs in Wahid's home province of East Java. Many people
there believe the Indonesian president is an Islamic holy man. An opposition party official's home was attacked
on Sumatra Island.
Which of the following best summarizes the passage above?
A. Supporters of President Wahid rioted in protest of an attempt to remove him from office. Police
used warning shots to break up the crowd.
B. Thousands of protesters were rioting outside of a home at East Java. Some protesters attacked a

Astronomer Galileo Galilei played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. Using an improved telescope,
Galileo discovered the moons of the planet Jupiter and the phases of the planet Venus. For a long time, people
believed Earth to be the center of the solar system. Galilei, however, proved that Earth, like other planets,
revolves around the Sun. He was the first to observe lunar mountains, sunspots, and Saturn's rings.
Choose the best summary of the above passage.
A. Galileo enjoyed solving mathematical equations and making scientific discoveries.
B. Galileo was an astronomer who discovered important facts about the solar system.
C. Galileo spent years trying to form a theory on planetary movements and positions.
D. Galileo proved to people that the Earth, like other planets, revolves around the Sun.

Studies have found that flying is about 29 times safer than driving. Still, many people have a fear of
flying, even if they know how safe it is. A fear of flying often stems from feeling out of control. Unless a person
is a pilot, he or she really has no control over the plane's movement. Also, planes make many odd sounds, and
rides can be very bumpy. Usually, the best way to combat a fear of flying is with education. Knowing the
physical laws that make flight possible, knowing what all the sounds a plane makes mean, and knowing how
bumps affect flight can all help to lessen the fears people have of flying. Because flying is the fastest way and
one of the safest ways to travel, a person should not let the fear of flying get into his or her way.
Which of these best summarizes the passage?
A. To get past a fear of flying, the best help is education about planes and flight.
B. Even though flying is 29 times safer than driving, many people are scared of flying.
C. Fear of flying is caused by many things, including lack of knowledge about planes and flying.
D. Despite its safety, flying scares people for several reasons but can be treated by education.

Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. Most cities have at least one disc golf
course while some, like Dallas, Texas, have over a dozen. There are many reasons for the sport's growing
popularity. First, a new player only needs to invest about $10, for a golf disc, to begin. Second, unlike regular
golf which can cost over $100 to play, disc golf is free. Third, because most people know how to throw a
Frisbee, learning to play disc golf is relatively easy. True, it takes a lot of time and practice to become a skilled
player, but a new player can have a good time on the course the first time they decide to give it a try. Courses
are popping up all over the country. If you are interested in playing but have no idea how to begin, there are
several Websites devoted to the sport that can help.
What is the best summary of this passage?
A. Disc golf is a sport that uses a Frisbee-type disc. Because most people can throw a Frisbee, it is easy

C. Disc golf is a fast-growing sport because it is affordable. A new disc costs only about $10.
D. Disc golf is growing in popularity because it is easy and cheap to begin playing. More information

fashionable men's hat is seeing a resurgence in popularity. Led by styles such as the fedora and the panama,

the hat is an accessory capable of expressing individuality and taste.

even make weight control easier. The ultimate answer may be that the pros and cons of snacking vary among

What’s so special about a bunch of green beans called edamame? It’s not just the name, but also the contents
that make this seed a favorite among Japanese and Chinese people. Edamame is a fancy name coined for boiled
soybeans. We all know how healthy and nutritious soybeans are. Eating half a cup of these tasty beans punches
up the intake of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals in a diet. An interviewer once saw Faith Hill snacking on
edamame at an interview for Country Music Television. Soy is known to promote good health and prevent
certain diseases.
A recent study shows that soy helps reduce insulin resistance, kidney damage, and increases good
cholesterol. Soy products have components that fight cancer. Isoflavone is the most active anti-cancer element
