May 25, 2014 Sixth Sunday of Easter ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175TH STREET · TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS 60477 · stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT Peek-a-boo We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God’s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2014 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday 8:45 am: Tuesday & Wednesday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am & 5 pm Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME The title of this article refers to a childhood game most of us have played at one time or another with very young children, even to the point of hiding our eyes with our hands. With a joyful glee toddlers cover their eyes and imitate us in gesture and an attempt to say “peek-a-boo”. The practice of our faith is not a game. Yet some treat it with the same casual attitude. Sometimes we get too comfortable with our loved ones and, without thinking, disrespect them. We may be critical of our spouse or children in a public way, yet we would never consider saying the same critical viewpoints openly about friends or fellow workers. We may show negative attitudes or feelings at the dinner table, yet be as sweet as syrup when we see the person we are criticizing. Do we have the same disrespect for the Lord? Do we rush out before Mass is completed for poor reasons of not wanting to get “caught in traffic”? Do we criticize parish policies without finding out all the facts. How do we dress when we come to church? Does it show respect for both the Lord and my brothers and sisters in the Lord? What is my attitude toward singing and praying aloud? Do we make excuses rather than try to participate fully so that others will be encouraged and strengthened by my response? When I receive Communion do I take time to thank the Lord or do I rush out and in effect treat the Real Presence as if it was just a communion wafer? What do my actions tell others about my interior belief? The opening line of today’s gospel is: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Do I take time, just one hour a week, to celebrate Mass and truly be present to the Lord and community? One last game comes to mind as I write about the Mass and putting our faith into action. Hide-and-go-seek was always a lot of fun as all the participants hid hoping the person who was “It” would not find them before they made it back “home” safely. Do we treat our faith the same way? Do we hope to make it safely back home without being seen or caught in the “in between” time? Jesus is the Good Shepherd who seeks us out not to play games but to walk with us on our journey of life. He is there to pick us up and to help us each day. He also asks us to be his hands and feet and caring presence in our own day and age. I invite you to make a commitment to St. George. Become involved. Feel the Spirit. It is more than my writing. It is the Lord who invites and is counting on your response. --Fr. Ken Fleck Suggestion Box Inquiries have been made as to whether or not the 8:30 Sunday Mass will be restored. The three year decision making process that was followed to reach this new schedule included a parish survey, consultation with the staff and Parish Council and a consensus decision. It will remain as our consultative bodies have heard. Guide Book and Directory Update We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. The book contains the who, what, when, where, why and how of our church. The book is provided at no cost to our church, including the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. MONDAY, May 26 Memorial Day No School TUESDAY, May 27 Does St. George Church database have your family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update your record for our annual Guide Book & Directory with any changes, additions or deletions that may have occurred in your family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the church office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. The church office number is (708) 532-2243 or email [email protected]. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out how to advertise in our book, please call the church rectory at (708) 532-2243. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize our Guide Book & Directory advertisers over non-advertisers. It “does pay” to advertise in our Guide Book & Directory. 8:00 am PART-PART Rm. 9:30 am Fun & Games-Meeting Rm. 4 2:00 pm Girl Scouts-Meeting Rms. 1&2 7:00 pm Baptismal Preparation-Quiet Rm. 7:00 pm School Board Meeting-Board Rm. 7:30 pm Pro-Life Meeting-Meeting Rm. 4 WEDNESDAY, May 28 2:00 pm Girl Scouts-Meeting Rms. 1&2 7:00 pm Life Moves On-Meeting Rm. 3 7:00 pm School Board Prospective New Member Dinner-Rectory Meeting Rm. 7:30 pm AA Meeting-O’Connell Hall 7:30 pm Al-Anon-School Classroom THURSDAY, May 29 9:30 am Catholic Women Sharing Faith-Quiet Rm. 11:00 am PART-PART Rm. 12:00 pm Band Lessons-Meeting Rms. 1-3 1:45 pm PART-Georgian Rm. 5:00 pm PART-Rectory 6:30 pm Teen Choir-Music Rm. 7:00 pm Band Recruitment Meeting-Meeting Rm. 1 7:00 pm Baptismal Preparation-Quiet Rm. 7:00 pm Café Soul-Teen Rm., Board Rm. 7:00 pm Quinceanera Rehearsal-Georgian Rm. 7:00 pm Wedding Rehearsal-Church FRIDAY, May 30 12:30 pm Staff Appreciation Luncheon-Meeting Rms. 1-3 6:00 pm Band-Meeting Rm. 3 7:00 pm Bingo-O’Connell Hall, Georgian Rm. 7:00 pm Graduation-Meeting Rms. 1-3, Gym, Church 8:00 pm Narcotics Anon-School Classroom SATURDAY, May 31 1:00 pm Girl Scouts-Meeting Rm. 1 2:00 pm Wedding-Church 5:00 pm Reconciliation-Church 7:00 pm Volleyball-Gym SUNDAY, June 1 Fair Trade after Masses-Brides Rm. Schwider Mass Times forTravelers Summer travelers may be interested to know that they can log on to www.masstimes.org for information on Catholic Mass times throughout the country. You may learn where the nearest church is as well. The church, sharing in mankind’s joys and hopes, in its anxieties and sadness, stands with every man and woman of every place and time, to bring them the good news of the Kingdom of God, which in Jesus Christ has come and continues to be present among them. In the midst of mankind and in the world she is the sacrament of God’s love and, therefore, of the most splendid hope, which inspires and sustains every authentic undertaking for and commitment to human liberation and advancement. To man involved in a complex of relationships within modern societies, the church addressed her social doctrine. As an expert in humanity, she is able to understand man in his vocation and aspirations, in his limits and misgivings in his rights and duties, and to speak a word of life that reverberates in the historical and social circumstances of human existence. With her social teaching the church seeks to proclaim the Gospel and make it present in the complex network of social relations. It is not simply a matter of reaching out to man in society but of enriching and permeating society itself with the Gospel. The way people live together in society often determine the quality of life and therefore the conditions in which every man and woman understand themselves and make decisions concerning themselves and their vocation. For this reason, the church is not indifferent to what is decided, brought about or experienced in society; she is attentive to the moral quality - that is, the authentically human and humanizing aspects - of social life. Society - and with it, politics, the economy, labor, law, culture - is not simply a secular and worldly reality and therefore outside or foreign to the message and economy of salvation. Society in fact, with all that is accomplished within it, concerns man. Society is made up of men and women, who are the primary and fundamental way for the church. By means of her social doctrine, the church takes on the task of proclaiming what the Lord has entrusted to her. She makes the message of the freedom and redemption wrought by Christ, the Gospel of the Kingdom, present in human history. In proclaiming the Gospel the church bears witness to man, in the name of Christ, to his dignity and his vocation to the communion of persons. She teaches him, the demands of justice and peace in conformity with divine wisdom. Redemption begins with the Incarnation, by which the Son of God takes on all that is human, except sin, according to the solidarity established by the wisdom of the Divine Creator and embraces everything in his gift of redeeming Love. Man is touched in the fullness of his being: a being that is corporeal and spiritual, that is in a solidary relationship with others. Fr. Blaise Join Our Newest Group At St. George… Fun and Games! The sign in front of the church read, “No one drowns by falling in the water. One drowns by staying in the water.” That might be well and good, but once you’re in the water, it’s not always easy to get out. The same is true in our spiritual lives. We sometimes fall into the waters of materialism and self-indulgence, and it’s not easy to get out, especially if we fall in the deep end. But, we can get help. When we feel like we’re drowning in our spiritual journey, it’s time to come to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in the Holy Family Chapel, and ask for Our Lord’s help. He’s there anxiously waiting for us, and ready to throw us a life-line of His love and His graces. You might even get dry from the radiance of His love and be back on the way toward spiritual happiness. Even better, call Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762, and sign up to visit with the Blessed Sacrament for an hour every week. This way Our Lord will help you keep away from the troubled waters, and keep you headed down the path to eternal happiness where the only waters are the waters of eternal life. Terry Dorencz 8 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church • Tinley Park, IL 60477 Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine The May 13 pilgrimage was a wonderful tribute to Our Lady, and a testimony of love and caring and working together for the good of others. Huge thanks to Theresa Hughes, Martha Pena, and Fr. Roberto for the great gifts of your talent, effort and loving service which made the pilgrimage prayerful and memorable for so many good people of St. George and neighboring parishes. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Maryville in Des Plaines is beautiful! Our summer seminarian, Miguel, offered an interesting and helpful presentation on Our Lady of Guadalupe and we learned many new facts about this tradition of belief, and the cloth that Juan Diego presented as proof of the apparition. Fr. Marco, who leads the congregation at the Shrine, presented the fascinating history of the Shrine at Maryville and information about the community that worships there. Thousands come for Masses each weekend, and on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12, upwards of 100,000 join to celebrate! Our Mass, celebrated by Fr. Roberto, was inspirational and intimate. Thanks, Fr. Roberto, for suggesting the perfect song for the opening of our liturgy, La Guadalupana, and thanks to the spontaneous choir and voices who carried us through this lovely traditional song of blessing. The rosary in four languages and the worship aid to accompany this was particularly powerful. The incredible power and joy of being surrounded by the world community, the One Body of Christ, feels like God's Kingdom, and we were able to make that happen with our pilgrimage from St. George. May 13, the anniversary of the first appearance of Our Lady at Fatima, was celebrated with our pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Let us pray that Our Blessed Mother was honored by our love, devotion and efforts, and that through our prayers, joined with Her prayers, we will touch the heart of our Savior, and bring His Peace upon ourselves, our parish, and all those we love. THANK YOU St. George Church & School The Super Bingo-Raffle fundraiser was a great success for our school, being a fun afternoon of bingo, raffles and fellowship for our parish community. In addition, a HUGE thank you to the entire St. George staff for providing the support needed to host this exciting event!! Also, a special thank you to school families for your generous food donations and to the Friday Night Bingo volunteers, especially Cathy Currie, for their support throughout the years!
