Transparent glass bottles, jars and flasks
Refrigerators, freezers, washing- and drying machines, TV-radio-hifi, computers, cooking equipment, light equipment, old mobile phones …
- When purchasing new equipment the shop has
to take back old equipment
- Broken equipment which you don’t replace can
be brought to a containerpark
- Re-usable electric or electronic goods can be
brought free of charge to the recycling center SPIT
These goods can not be picked up as large domestic garbage!
PLASTIC BOTTLES AND FLASKS, if possible
pressed together with the screw cap still on,
from water and sodas, fruit and vegetable juices,
milk, washing powders and fabric softeners, bath or
shower products, distillated water...
Not allowed !
Flat glass like from windows and mirrors, light bulbs,
TL tubes, stone bottles, porcelain, pottery, pyrex, ply
glass and crystal
METAL PACKAGING
Drink cans and canned food tins, empty spray guns
from food or cosmetics, screw caps, crown caps and
shells from bottles and jars, boxes and canisters,
aluminium plates, boats and trays.
No shells nor caps. Put the glass in the containers
according to the colour of the glass. Don’t leave anything around the containers: unauthorised dumping is
illegal. Respect the peace and quiet of the neighbours
and only use the containers between 7 am and 10
pm.
DRINK CARTONS
Fruit juice, milk …
Not allowed!
Containers or boats of (e.g.) butter, margarine, or
yoghurt, plastic bags, foil or film of any kind, toys,
buckets, clothes, electronic gear, organic waste,
diapers, medical waste (e.g. injection needles),
plastic jars, boxes, polysterene foam, jerry cans for
motor oil, aluminium foil, wrappings containing toxic/
acid products.
Completely empty plastic containers.
No container of more than 8 litres allowed.
This part of domestic garbage has to be put in
the official blue PMD bag from Ecowerf (€ 0,25).
For sale in the City shop and other stores and
supermarkets (see below).
LARGE DOMESTIC GARBAGE (GROF)
All domestic garbage that can not be put into a
regular garbage bag and that is not re-usable.
PAPER & CARDBOARD (PAP & KAR)
Paper and carton wrappings, paper bags, carton
boxes, periodicals and newspapers, advertising papers, (telephone) books, printing paper, writing and
machine paper.
Not allowed !
Dirty or greasy paper, aluminium paper, cellophane
wrapping, wall covering, paper with a plastic layer on
top.
Remove plastic foil from newspapers, periodicals,
advertising papers before discarding them. Collect your
paper and carton in a carton box or bind them together
in a pile with a piece of rope, making sure that everything is bound together tightly and that the rope is from
organic origin. Maximum 15 kilos per package.
Ask for a sticker in the city shop (see below) to no
longer receive unwanted paper in your mailbox!
CITY SHOP
How?
- Packed in an orderly fashion and firmly bundled
into pieces of 1m H X 2m B and maximum 30 kilos
- You can call to 016/29 61 14 to make an appointment with the city services. Afterwards you’ll have to
transfer € 25 for the transportation plus a fixed rate
per piece, wich you can find under ‘guarded container parks’.

WOOD CLIPPINGS (SNOEIHOUT)
Only wood-like material: branches and trunks of trees
and bushes with a max. diameter of 10cm.
- Little tree stumps and roots (with a cross section
smaller than 20cm) with the dirt completely removed.
- Max. 2m³ a time.
How?
- Only bound together with organic ribbon in bundles
with a maximum diameter of 40cm and a maximum
length of 1.5m. Not wrapped (in plastic or cardboard)
- The maximum weight is set on 20kg.
Not allowed!
- No hedge trimming or other green waste (this can
go with GFT-collection)
- No tree stumps bigger than 20cm in diameter.
- Don’t wrap in a plastic or paper bag or a carton box
(the same goes for bushes with thorns)
- Separate collection day for Christmas trees
Only dry and re-usable textile. To be put in a plastic
bag in one of textile containers accross Leuven:
shoes (a pair), clothing, handbags, sheets, blankets,
towels... Recycling centre Spit also collects textile
six times a year. Please indicate SPIT on the bag.
How?
- Only in the official brown garbage bags from
the city of Leuven (small = € 1,25 big = € 2,25).
- Garbage bags of any other sort will not be collected and are considered as illegal waste dumping.
- See to it that the bags are well closed.
The maximum weight is set on 15kg.

SMALL DANGEROUS WASTE (KGA)
Paints, ink, glue, resin, deep-frying fat or grease,
fondue-oil, motoroil, acids, batteries, products with
mercury, (package of) dangerous domestic products with mixed composition, TL-bulbs, savinglamps and halogen lamps, corrosive products,
X-rays … In short: Toxic stuff.
- You can bring small dangerous waste for free to
one of the three guarded container parks (see
below).
- For batteries use the green BEBAT-boxes that
you can find in shops in your neighbourhood
GUARDED CONTAINER PARKS
CITY CLEANING
VEGETABLE, FRUIT AND GARDEN
WASTE (GFT)
Leaves, fruit and vegetable peels, all food residues
(including meat and fish), egg shells and plants,
coffee filters (non-plastic) and content, teabags and
tea leafs, grass, straw and foliage, small trimmings,
shortened branches (twigs). Wrap meat, fish and
other fast resolving food leftovers in newspaper.
How?
- Leuven: official green garbage bags from the city
of Leuven. (small = € 0,50, big = € 1) These are for
sale in the city shop and in numerous stores and
supermarkets.
- Heverlee: green container with one sticker at € 50
for the container of 120l and two stickers for 240l
wich you can buy in the city shop. Make sure the lid is
closed.
Not allowed!
- Mussel shells, sand, timber, bones, dead animals,
wood clippings...

Only for the inhabitants and students of Leuven.
Attention! The container parks can not be entered
without a badge. You must request one at the City
Shop and pay a guarantee of € 50 plus a fee of
€ 2,50 each time you enter a container park.
Therefore we advise you to use as much as
possible the door-to-door collections.
