It seems like just yesterday that we were at the legislature lobbying for passage of legislation to help fund the purses for what was the premier racing day for the horse industry in Louisiana. This included both thoroughbred and quarter horse accredited Louisiana bred horses. It has been a tremendous success in that it features the best of both breeds competing on one day for purses that have grown to more than a million dollars for the day. This eventually led to the other tracks in the state wanting their own day featuring Louisiana bred horses. With one such day at each track the glitter of Louisiana Champions Day is somewhat diminished but is still something every owner and trainer desires to not only compete in but strives to win. sold to the Gala. All you need to be admitted is to be a current member of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association; this will get you two admissions. If someone is not a member they will be asked to join the Association as an associate member if they are not currently in the breeding business in Louisiana, or to pay up their membership if they are currently breeding horses in Louisiana. I hope to see a great crowd decked out for this celebration. For more information you can contact the office of the LTBA. Four years later String King has taken his owner/breeder/trainer on a journey that included 18 victories, 13 of which are stakes wins, and 12 second or third place finishes in 38 starts. The gelding is still winning stakes at age 7 in 2015 and has earned $980,552 to date. Includied among the 13 stakes won by String King are the 2015 G3 Colonel E.R. Bradley Handicap on the turf at Fair Grounds and three editions each of the Louisiana Cup Turf Classic at Louisiana Downs and Louisiana Champions Day Turf Stakes at Fair Grounds; as well as 2 editions of the Mr. Sulu Stakes at Fair Grounds, named for another popular Louisiana Bred turf runner. In breeding, Smith looks for what he calls “blue hen” broodmares back in the generation line and his mare String Dancer had that proven level of pedigree. String King has certainly proven to be a sucessful result of this philosphy. Charlie Smith is unique in being breeder/owner and trainer of String King, pictured below winning the 2015 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic at Louisiana Downs. Fall 2015 17 PEDIGREE PATTERNS By Avalyn Hunter Custom For Carlos N ot too many Louisiana stallions can boast of having a winner during the prestigious Saratoga meeting in their first crops, but freshman sire Custom for Carlos accomplished that feat when his daughter Big World (x Tensas Wedding Joy, by Broken Vow) won a seven-furlong maiden race at the Spa. Currently the leading freshman sire in both Louisiana and the Southwestern region, the stallion is off to a quick start with four winners and progeny earnings of $163,930 so far from his first crop. Custom for Carlos comes by the ability to impart precocious speed honestly. His sire, More Than Ready, won four stakes as a juvenile including the Sanford Stakes (G2) and Tremont Stakes (G3) and was third in the Futurity Stakes (G1). The following year, the colt won the King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) and Hutcheson Stakes (G2), both at seven furlongs, and stretched his speed to run second in the Blue Grass Stakes (G1), Louisiana Derby (G2) and Dwyer Stakes (G2). As a sire, More Than Ready has 148 stakes winners to his credit as of October 6, 2015, and led the American juvenile sire list in 2010. More Than Ready is also off to a good start as a sire of sires as his Australian-bred son Sebring was champion third-crop sire in that country during the 2014/15 Southern Hemisphere season. A scion of the great La Troienne family, More Than Ready was sired by an even better stallion in 10-time Argentine champion sire Southern Halo, a son of twotime American champion sire Halo and a great sire of sprinters and milers. His dam Woodman’s Girl also has good antecedents, as her sire Woodman was the champion Irish juvenile of 1985 before embarking on a successful stud career. Produced from Meadow Oaks, also the dam of sprint stakes winner Mimi’s Bling (by Bernstein), Custom for Carlos has another source of speed close up in his maternal grandsire, Meadowlake. Winner of the 1985 Arlington-Washington Futurity (G1) during a brief but unbeaten racing career, Meadowlake sired 60 18 Halo Southern Halo Northern Sea More Than Ready ‘97 Woodman Woodman's Girl Becky Be Good CUSTOM FOR CARLOS 2006 Hold Your Peace Meadowlake Suspicious Native Meadow Oaks, ‘92 Seattle Slew Peggy Slew Plankton Hail to Reason Cosmah Northern Dancer Sea Saga Mr. Prospector Playmate Naskra Good Landing Speak John Blue Moon Raise a Native Be Suspicious Bold Reasoning My Charmer Quack Gang Plank stakes winners including champion juvenile filly Meadow Star. Further back, Custom for Carlos has 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew—a very fast horse indeed—as the sire of his second dam, Peggy Slew. Custom for Carlos’ third dam, Plankton (by Quack), provides a leavening of stamina in the stallion’s pedigree. The winner of the 10-furlong Ladies Handicap (G1), Plankton produced the staying Buckley Boy (by Alydar), winner of the 1986 Gallant Fox Handicap (G2) over 13 furlongs. Plankton’s presence in Custom for Carlos’ pedigree lends support to the possibility that he may be able to sire progeny capable of going around two turns when put to more stamina-oriented mates. One turn was all Custom for Carlos himself wanted, but he was a good and consistent runner within his stamina limitations. While he did not race at 2, he made up for lost time by winning two stakes (including the Grade III Jersey Shore Stakes in a smart 1:08.19 for six furlongs) and placing in two more at 3, earning $290,630 that year. He followed up with Grade III wins in the Count Fleet Handicap at Louisiana Horse Oaklawn and the Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream Park at 4, was second to 2010 champion sprinter Big Drama in the Mr. Prospector Stakes at 5 and ended his racing career having earned $485,865 and five tripledigit Beyer speed ratings. Custom for Carlos’ first crop was well received in the sale ring, averaging $23,616 as yearlings and $42,808 as 2-year-olds. It is now up to the stallion’s runners to justify his initial appeal, and so far they are delivering. While it is too early to discern any significant trends among Custom for Carlos’ runners, three of his four winners are from Mr. Prospector-line mares who also return Northern Dancer in their pedigrees. The fourth, Pulchritude, has a decidedly unorthodox pedigree as she is out of the Meadowlake mare Daddys Little Girl, making her inbred 3x2 to Meadowlake. More Than Ready has done very well with mares returning Danzig, and as Custom for Carlos is free of that strain, this may be a viable tactic for him as well, especially if the mare also returns Mr. Prospector. Another cross with good potential is to the perennially popular Storm Cat line, which is well represented in Fall 2015 Louisiana. Custom for Carlos may also fare well with other Northern Dancer strains such as Deputy Minister, Nureyev, The Minstrel, Lyphard and possibly Sadler’s Wells. The male line of Unbridled has been popular in Louisiana, and this looks like a good thing for Custom for Carlos, whose pedigree suggests he will fit mares from this line well. Other Mr. Prospector-line strains that may be worth looking for in mares for Custom for Carlos include Forty Niner, Gone West, Crafty Prospector, Machiavellian and possibly Kingmambo and Conquistador Cielo. In addition, His Majesty (through sources other than Pleasant Colony), Caro, Valid Appeal, Secretariat and Blushing Groom appear to be positive pedigree elements to look for. “We are really pleased to have Custom for Carlos here,” says Val Murrell, general manager of Clear Creek Stud. “He’s a big, grand, good-looking horse, very well muscled and with good bone and balance. He’s easy to get along with, too, and he really stamps his babies. They’re very athletic and have good minds. That filly that won at Saratoga (Big World), she’s with Anthony Dutrow and he seems pretty pleased with her. We’re certainly hoping she’ll go on to bigger things.” Murrell believes the future is only going to get brighter for Custom for Carlos. “We’ve been quite pleased with his sales results, even though the market was a bit tighter this year. The nice thing is that I think his youngsters will be really versatile. They’ve got the background to race on dirt, turf, whatever. I’m looking forward to what the next year’s going to bring.” Custom for Carlos stood the 2015 season at Clear Creek for $3,500; a 2016 fee has not yet been announced. 19 Girl Power Fillies ruled the ring. Catalogues in hand, red clay over their shoes, buyers scoured the back stalls of the Ike Hamilton Expo Center looking for the horse that could be the one. All had different goals in mind; pin-hooking, value, the big horse, partnerships. As the auction began, the rail around the walking ring was packed with eager buyers. On September 29th, Louisiana’s premier breeders came together to offer up some of the best Louisiana bred yearlings the state has to offer. Sire power dominated the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana 2015 20 auction. Names such as Afleet Alex, Closing Argument, Into Mischief, Half Ours, Eskendereya, Old Fashioned, and Songandaprayer to name a few were well represented at the sale. The Louisiana Breeders Association has been coming together since 1963 to offer up a chance for any size racing operation to get involved in the Louisiana bred program. The barn area of the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in West Monroe was reconfigured for this year’s sale. “We took out several stalls in an effort to allow consignors and buyers more room to operate,” stated Sales Coordinator Tim Boyce, “Ike Louisiana Horse Top: Hip 168, the sale topping filly by Half Ours-Frosty Promise, purchased by Virginia Lazenby for $66,000. Hamilton is a great facility with a lot of undercover, all-weather space and yet over the years it has felt cramped. Taking out the stalls is something we tried and it worked.” 186 yearlings passed through the sales ring. Fillies ruled the ring. The top three hip numbers sold were all fillies and seven of the top ten highest priced yearlings were all fillies. Roger G. Smith of Magnolia, Arkansas secured a $65,000 bay filly from the Pelican State Thoroughbred consignment. A bay filly out of the Carson City mare Desert Girl, by Into Mischief, who stands for $45,000 in Ky. Was seen as a standout by Fall 2015 her new owner. “This is the only one we were looking at and the only one I bid on today” said Smith. This may not be the filly’s last time passing through the sales ring. The yearling filly was a hot commodity after previously going through the sales ring at the OBS August Yearling sale in Florida where she was a buyback by her breeders for $50,000. Assisting Mr. Smith with his purchase was advisor Robert Brewer of Canton, TX. “The plan is to bring her to the farm, raise and prepare her and then bring her to the Ocala (Two Year-Old in Training) March sale,” Smith elaborated. 21 At Your Service! louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders assoc. is here to help you. A filly by Half Ours, she is a half-sister to Grade 2 winning Icy Atlantic who earned over $990,000 on the racetrack and Grade 3 winner Wild Promises who compiled almost $700k while racing. Trainer Oscar Modica signed the sales ticket for new owner Virginia Lazenby. Taking their familiar place atop the leading consignors was Clear Creek Stud. The Folsom, Louisiana farm sold 25 yearlings for gross receipts of $369,200, including the Half Ours sales-topping filly. That number could have risen higher but the consignment had 11 yearlings for which reserves were not attained. Not to be out done, Terry Gabriel’s Pelican State Thoroughbreds as agent had receipts of $269,500 for 16 yearlings who found new owners. There were a total of 29 different consignors who sold horses at the one day sale. Gross receipts for the 120 horses sold were Fall 2015 $1,110,000 a decline of 29% from 2014, an average price of $9,250 and a median price of $4,500. As the buyers became more selective the buy-back rate kept in line with the national average at 35%. There was an international flavor to this year’s Breeders Sales Company event as one of the buyers was 82 year-old Enrique Cantarell. A native of Mexico City, Cantarell sat in the front row. Diaz purchased ten yearlings to take back to his home track, Hipodromo de las Americas to begin their training. A bonus this year to both Buyers and Sellers is all horses that passed through the ring are eligible for two new sale Stakes, yet to be named, which will be held at Evangeline Downs in 2017. This is in addition to the annually run Sales Stakes the A.L. “Red” Erwin Stakes and Elge Rasberry Stakes contested at Louisiana Downs for Louisiana-bred sale horses. S ince his first memory of the racetrack in the winter of 1945, Danny Cazaubon has been on a long walk with hundreds of friends and thousands of horses. His first glimpse and taste of the racetrack life came when he was 11-years-old. “A bunch of us kids used to congregate around a barn at Fair Grounds,” Cazaubon recalls. “We were like the Little Rascals. I ended up walking horses and mucking stalls like it was play time. On Saturdays the man might throw us a dollar or two and it was enough for all of us to go to a movie.” The stable owner of that barn ran all the ice houses in the city and also had a small bar and restaurant across from the Baptist Theological Seminary. “There was a bookie joint in the back. That was his big thing,” Cazaubon remembers. “Back in those days everybody bet through a bookie. It was natural. One of my friends said that his Daddy was a book-keeper. Well, I wasn’t stupid. I knew what that meant.” 24 Living with an elderly aunt in the French Quarter, the young Cazaubon had plenty of room to ramble. The Desire and Gentilly Street cars were his avenues of escape. At 81 years of age, Cazaubon can still bring vivid memories to the surface. “Vegetable and “Back in those days fruit wagons came through every everybody bet through a morning. One guy bookie. it was natural. would be driving and the other guy One of my friends said hollering and sellthat his Daddy was a ing. Everybody had their own song book-keeper. Well, i to sell bananas. In my aunt’s refrigerwasn’t stupid. i knew ator all she kept what that meant.” was a bottle of water, a stick of butter and a carton of cream. When she was ready to cook for the day she would carry her basket down to the market. If you wanted a live chicken you went to Decatur Street.” Finding trouble was never a problem for the young Louisiana Horse “Every barn was individual. They all looked different. if you were a sportsman and raced in New Orleans, the Fair Grounds would give you a piece of ground and you built your own barn.” Cazaubon. “You name it and I got into it. We used to play in the oak trees at City Park. They had a policeman over there named Joe Schiro, who rode a big white pony and he used to chase us out of the park. We would wade across those lagoons to the islands and get those old sour duck eggs. Then we would sneak over on Dumaine Street and throw the eggs at the bus and scatter and run in all directions.” City boys find a way. Cazaubon learned to swim by jumping off the Magnolia Bridge over Bayou St. John. One of Cazaubon’s teen-age buddies was Gene Schwartz, who would go on to be a clocker for Daily Racing Form. One afternoon on the corner of Moss and Esplanade, the boys decided to paint a car. “We had the car sanded down and ready to paint but nobody could find any brushes so we ended up using a whisk broom. Talk about a mess.” School daze. Cazaubon’s formal education had a short fuse. He went to Delgado Trade School where he studied commercial art. “One day I was in class, working on a drawing and the professor asked me how I did certain textures. That was my last day in school,” Cazaubon says. “If I have to tell the professor how to do something then why am I in school?” From that point forward, Cazaubon would never see Fall 2015 another library or a text book. The horses called and Cazaubon answered. He went to work at the Fair Grounds, learning the craft from trainer K.D. Kepplar, who was an assistant to Marion Van Berg. Jobs as a groom with trainers Hal Bishop and Tennessee Wright followed. His progress continued with employment with Greentree Stable along with a stint with trainer Moody Jolley when the star stakes horse in the stable was Ridan. Cazaubon’s big break came in the winter of 1958 when he worked for Alex “Henry” Johnston (uncle of Eddie Johnston). “We had eleven horses that winter and won 32 races,” Cazaubon recalls. “When you were in Henry Johnston’s barn you were expected to do your job like a professional.” You have to start somewhere. In the spring of 1959, the stewards at Jefferson Downs looked the other way and Cazaubon got his trainer’s license. His stable consisted of two 3-year-old maidens owned by a plumber. Cazaubon’s first winner was a horse named Russian Tide that he purchased off the cuff from J.R. Palmisano for $1500. “The horse had a club foot and he was a bleeder,” Cazaubon says. “I put him out in a backyard farm out in Harahan and nursed him back to health.” The Fair Grounds became Cazaubon’s home base and he can recall the backstretch environment during 25 the ‘60’s like it was the back of his hand. “Every barn was individual,” Cazaubon remembers. “They all looked different. If you were a sportsman and raced in New Orleans, the Fair Grounds would give you a piece of ground and “There was a training you built your track on the other side of own barn. They had a huge tack room and showers. Joe W. Brown had a big barn he built. They had grass on the backstretch and you could take a horse out and graze him. There was a training track on the other side of Belfort Street. If you wanted to gallop or school a horse you didn’t have to go to the main track. Probably nobody knows about that today.” According to Cazaubon, the Fair Grounds backstretch was functional but far from pretty. “There was one cinder block barn with 25 stalls that they rented out. It was so dark back in there that we called it the Dungeon.” “There was a track kitchen but you could get breakfast, lunch or dinner at Joe Stokes, Tiny’s, the Belfort Inn or the Half-Mile Pole on Belfort Street,” Cazaubon continues. “A plate of red beans cost fifty cents, and hand writing could get you a job working the board. All around the neighborhood, the pay phones were in wooden boxes and somebody came around and put a lock on them just before the races started.” Cazaubon describes the front side grandstand. 26 “There were these huge, multi-framed windows that they rolled up when the weather was warm. Governor Earl Long would be down there in his box seat with his lady friend Blaze Star. She was a dancer on Bourbon Street. Diamond Jim Brady had his own box on the finish line. There were always a lot of dignitaries at the track and all the men wore hats or a nice cap.” Among the cadre of Cazaubon’s closest friends were some of the top jockeys at Fair Grounds during the ‘60’s and 70’s. Bobby Ussery, Ray Broussard, Johnny Heckman and Jimmy Nichols were all on a first name basis. “Broussard was from Abbeville, Louisiana and he always had a pocketful of money,” Cazaubon remembers. “There used to be a roller skating rink on the corner of Gentilly and St. Bernard Avenue. One particular night we were all in there and the manager thought we were getting too rowdy and might hurt somebody. Ray told the manager to put everybody out and he would pay the tab, and instead of renting the skates, Ray bought new shoes for all of us. We skated so long I could hardly walk the next day.” A horse named Speed Syndrone that he claimed off trainer Dewey Smith was Cazaubon’s biggest betting score. Entered in a claiming race that the Racing Secretary needed to fill, Speed Syndrone was a dead short horse and well beaten the day that Cazaubon went in for him. Cazaubon backed off Speed Syndrone’s training for 30 days, wormed the gelding and got his blood count up. “When he started putting on weight I called the owner and told him we had him in on a Sunday.” The owner, a self-made millionaire from Houston, Texas flew in with his entourage and was picked up at the airport by a private chauffeur. “This guy was a player,” Cazaubon recalls with a twinkle in his eye. “The night before the race we had a table the length of the room at Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Steak and lobster for days. He bet two grand each with bookmakers in Houston and Hot Springs and worked out a deal to get track odds on half the bet as long as he agreed to settle up on Tuesday. Well, the horse wins and paid $59. My man got paid by a runner that brought the cash in an attaché case.” Cazaubon talks with pride about his re-habilitation of a broke down horse named Inky Way in 1964. Purchased from a blacksmith, Inky Way was bowed in both front legs. “The guy said I could have him for $200 if I took him out of the barn right there on the Louisiana Horse Over $26 Million Owners and Breeders Awards Paid Out in 2014 The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association offers the most comprehensive awards program in the U.S. 3 rAces per dAY offered for accredited Louisiana breds at each track each day in Louisiana 20% Breeders' Awards paid to accredited Louisiana breds finishing first, second or third in any race in Louisiana (purse capped at $200,000) 20% Breeders' Awards paid to accredited Louisiana breds finishing first, second or third in any stakes race outside of Louisiana (purse capped at $200,000) World Wide Breeders Awards paid to accredited Louisiana breds finishing first, second or third in any race outside of Louisiana purse supplements: One half of breakage used to supplement races restricted to accredited Louisiana breds 30% of the thoroughbred share of net wins from slot machines at the race tracks is used to supplement purses for accredited Louisiana breds ½ of 1% of video poker franchise fee statewide with 2/3 of fund going to thoroughbreds Multiple state Bred days - Louisiana is the only state with more than one State Bred Day. The horse would go on to win four straight and win a career total of fourteen races. His single graded stakes win was with How I Wish in the 1988 Golden Harvest Stakes (grade II) at Louisiana Downs. Married for 60 years, Cazaubon and his wife Rita have raised four children. Three girls and a boy. “When I heard that Pope Francis was coming to the United States, I thought he might make my wife a saint. She went through hell and high water for all the years I was out there chasing horses and she stayed home to watch the kids.” Cazaubon’s career and life has been played out without a script or a pattern. If there was a strategy it was to just keep going and let the events unfold. “I don’t think I can point to any low point in my career,” he says. “I have been down to one horse and I’ve had as many as fifty-five and I enjoyed it all so much. By Jane Nicholes I rwin Olian lives in Las Vegas. He has a gold mining exploration company in Africa and North America, an independent art film distribution company in Los Angeles, and this year’s Super Derby winner, Mobile Bay. Why does a man who obviously could breed racehorses anywhere he wants choose to base his operation in Louisiana? “Louisiana has probably the most attractive incentive program for owners and breeders of any state in the country, with a high quality of racing,” Olian said. “I felt as a breeder it made good sense for me to move the heart and guts of my program essentially to Louisiana because of the incentives, because of the quality of racing. There are some wonderful trainers in Louisiana and some good professional caretakers.” That program has produced his first graded stakes winner in Mobile Bay, who in September became the third Louisiana-bred to win the Grade 2 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. Racing for Fall 2015 Olian’s Tigertail Ranch, Mobile Bay is by Olian’s stallion Lone Star Special out of Tranquility Bay, by Out of Place. Mobile Bay joins Free Spirit’s Joy (1991) and Vicar’s in Trouble (2014), as state-bred winners of the prestigious stakes for 3-year-olds. To Olian, the win validates what he calls “my own little bloodline.” An entrepreneur Olian grew up in Highland Park, IL. Now one of Chicago’s northern suburbs, at the time much of it was pasture land and a forest preserve. Olian learned to ride the hard way. “For the first couple of years I rode bareback because we didn’t even have a saddle,” Olian recalls. “We had a pony named Silver and another one named Jerry that we shared with the neighbors. I recall getting run off with a couple of times.” He was a riding instructor and showed briefly before going on to Princeton and then to Harvard Law School. Meanwhile, he became interested in horse racing and took a summer job as a hot walker for Irwin Olian trainer Steve DiMauro at Aqueduct. After law school Olian moved to California. “I was conflicted about whether I wanted to be a businessman or a horse trainer,” he said. He worked for the late Noble Threewitt on the weekends and a couple of mornings during the week, but decided he was better suited to business. At one point, Olian held the largest exploratory mining operation in Madagascar. He has founded 29 “Louisiana has probably the most attractive incentive program for owners and breeders of any state in the country, with a high quality of racing. I felt as a breeder it made good sense for me to move the heart and guts of my program essentially to Lone Star Special Louisiana because of the incentives, because of the quality of racing.” a couple of biotechnology companies as well as expanding his mining and entertainment interests. “I view myself as somewhat of a multi-purpose entrepreneur,” he said. “When I get really excited about an idea, I want to try and get a hold of it, run with the ball and develop it.” That philosophy perhaps accounts for his incorporation of racing and breeding on the side. Sunshine and the Civil War Olian’s “little bloodline” began with an Alydar broodmare called Chapin. She had lost some foals and suffered hard luck on the racetrack, but she ended up foaling a filly by Tactical Advantage named 30 Sunshine Special, “as stunning a mare as you’ve ever seen,” he said. Olian sent Sunshine Special to trainer Nick Zito, and she broke her maiden by 12 lengths at Belmont in her first start. But her second start ended her career, as Sunshine Special got tangled up in the starting gate and broke her pelvis. She nearly died of internal bleeding but recovered to become a broodmare. Working with trainer Dan Pish in Texas led Olian to Louisiana, and Sunshine Special bore a colt named Lone Star Special, a son of Malabar Gold by Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled. Lone Star Special won a couple of stakes races at Louisiana Downs before retiring at age 3 due to injury. He stands at Horse of Course in Benton for $1,500 (lfsn). From a few small crops, Lone Star Special has produced about 70 percent winners from runners, Olian said. “Lone Star had this remarkable acceleration. He was also a good-looking guy.” The same acceleration is seen when Mobile Bay goes to the track. The name Mobile Bay comes from Olian’s current penchant for naming horses after Civil War battles. There was indeed a battle of Mobile Bay in Alabama. Mobile Bay’s older half-brother is named Galveston Harbor. Other runners include First Bull Run and White Oak swamp. Olian generally doesn’t race 2year-olds; none of the dozen or so he currently owns have started. Neither did Mobile Bay. “He was given a long time to grow up,” he said. Road to the Super Derby “He’s a very intelligent, sensible horse. I think the thing that struck us first about Mobile Bay is his sheer size is awesome,” Olian said. Mobile Bay is also known for his relaxation – he’s often found lying down in his stall. His race record under the direction of trainer Victor Arceneaux is impressively consistent: 5-2-3 from 11 starts at this writing. His only unplaced performance was a seventh in the Crescent City Derby just after he broke his maiden. The colt started winning as the races got longer. But the eye-opener was his first stakes win, in the Lafayette Stakes in June at Evangeline Downs. As has become usual, Mobile Bay had been lagging behind. “He just took off like a rocket,” Olian said. “He looped the field and drew himself out very handily. That’s when I knew we had something special.” After winning the Louisiana Legends Cheval Stakes at Evangeline, Mobile Bay ran third in the Super Derby Prelude Stakes before again blowing by the field late to win the Super Derby on Sept. 12. Fifteen days later, he ran Fall 2015 Mobile Bay with jockey Edgar Prado aboard pulls away from the field in deep stretch to win the 36th running of the Grade II $400,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. Olian said Diego Saenz had done a great job but was injured. Olian hopes to use Prado again for the colt’s next race, which may be the Zia Park Derby in New Mexico on Nov. 25 or the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Santa Anita on the turf Nov. 28. Mobile Bay has already won on the turf. “Keep your eye on the other Lone Star Special babies,” Olian said. “There are some 2-year-olds that look extremely promising, and we’re very excited about them. I think group is going to be my best group of Lone Stars to date.” In all, Olian owns 20 mares (some of them rescues) and 14 babies, about half of which are by Lone Star Special. He has 15 horses at the track, split between Arceneaux and Pish. There are also about a dozen 2-year-olds and 10 yearlings. Horses not racing are with John Doherty at Horse of Course in Benton, where Lone Star Special stands. Olian said even his “mediocre” mares have nice Lone Star Special foals. He hopes Mobile Bay will become a top handicap horse. Olian said his success with Mobile Bay and other Louisiana breds proves that no one needs to spend a fortune in Kentucky on a six-figure broodmare and an equally high stud fee. “I develop these horses with good, sensible breeding decisions and highly professional, dedicated trainers. My horses are treated right from the day they’re born.” 31 Down but not Out Equine Sales Company of Louisiana Annual Select Yearling Sale E quine Sales Company held its annual Consignor Select Yearling Sale in Opelousas, Louisiana, on Wednesday, September 2. All told, 120 of 177 horses sold for $1,051,600 with an average of $8,763 and a median of $4,000. Those figures are down from last year's sale, but sale officials were still pleased with the results. "We knew going in that it would be tough...with the fact that the local economy is down due to the depressed oil market, but it was still a good sale," said Foster Bridwell, sales director for Equine Sales Company. The sale topper was hip #189, a Louisiana-bred colt from the first crop of Dialed In. Consigned by Select Sales, agent, and purchased by Bill Johnson for $55,000, the April foal is out of Middleburg Mint, who is a half sister to Grade 1 winner Malibu Mint. The top-selling filly, and second-highest overall price, was hip #160, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Into Mischief. She sold for $52,000 from 4M Ranch, agent, to Carl Moore Management LLC. Luckily for him that doesn’t happen often making him one of the leading trainers in North America by Gary McMillen I t’s a windy day at Wrigley Field and the Chicago Cubs are playing gorilla ball against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the National League Championship series. Karl Broberg, North America’s leading thoroughbred trainer by number of wins for the past two years, has reserved seats eight rows up from the first base line to celebrate a day at the ball park with his father. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the pitch count of the St. Louis relief pitcher has yet to catch up with the number of Old Style draft beers that father and son have consumed. “We’re on a liquid diet,” Broberg explains. “This is as close as it gets to me taking a vacation. There is no racing today at Remington Park and my Dad is an avid Cubs fan so I thought now was the time.” Prodigal son returns a favor. Broberg’s first memory of a race Fall 2015 track was when his father (a factory worker for an engineering company) pulled him out of school one afternoon and took him out to Arlington Park. “I guess I was in the third grade,” Broberg remembers. “I was mesmerized immediately. There were so many different things in play all at once. I just couldn’t get enough of all that color, noise and activity. Combine that with the possibility of making a couple of dollars just added to the excitement.” The seed was planted and by junior high was beginning to sprout. For the young Broberg, whose report card had begun to show more consonants than vowels, the racetrack had become intoxication. “The handicapping aspect of the sport is what grabbed my attention,” Broberg says. “It was more than just interesting. It was a challenge.” When he was 18-years old the family moved to Oklahoma. The junction of time would prove to be a tipping point. The state of Oklahoma had just allowed legalization of pari-mutuel wagering and Broberg was anxious to prove himself at the betting windows. Conditions were ripe and Broberg, true to his nature went all in. “At 33 Broberg was the time there were a a work in lot of new players progress. Street smarts resulted in his next enlightenment. Broberg hired a couple of additional trainers and then compared the vet bills. “It was ridiculous compared to what expenditures I was used to with Locke. The only way I was going to be able to stay in the sport was if I trained myself. The vet bills were just going to eat me up.” Over the past five years, Broberg has dominated the trainer standings at multiple tracks but nothing like the 2015 meet at Evangeline Downs where he won 98 races from 228 starters. The final number was twice that of his closest competitor. Broberg trained horses earned $1,262,732 during the 84 day meet. A dog forced into a corner is dangerous and Broberg, who has made his reputation by proving a point, came out swinging. “With very little notice, my assistant trainer decided to go out on his own just before the meet started,” Broberg says. “It was an absolute surprise. I was caught off guard.” “I made a decision that it was time for us to put our best foot forward and make a statement,” he says. “I brought in Abel Ramirez from Oaklawn Park as my assistant and jumped into the claim box with both feet. I was bound and determined to have the best meet possible....People were talking about how things would spiral down. I knew that we would be alright. I just wanted everybody else to know we were going to stay around.” There is a possibility that trainer Karl Broberg will be coming to a race track near you. His long range goals are to expand to other racing venues. “I don’t see myself ever being the leading trainer at Fair Grounds,” he says, “because I invest so much of our effort at Delta Downs. I would sell my soul to win a race at Delta. When you have two tracks running at the same time in close proximity to each other it makes better economic sense to choose your battlefield.” Married with five children and a home in Arlington, Texas, Broberg has been making appearances at recent horse sales. Do not be thrown off the scent. Racing remains the singular focus. “I have very limited dollars to approach the sales,” Broberg states. “I don’t waste my time dreaming about things that aren’t there. When opportunities present themselves, we will go after it. As a trainer I am tied to what the owners are willing to spend. When your client is three guys that have put up $4,000 a piece that is not going to have any leverage at a sale.” Broberg does not suffer from lack of confidence and the Evangeline Downs performance validated his system. “Our goal from the very beginning was to be king of the cheap stuff. The caliber of the racing does not matter to us. We just want to do the best we can with what we have and help our owners show a profit. Sure, it was a great meet and it was fun but it’s not so much that we get excited about winning. We just hate losing. We were less miserable than what we normally are,” Broberg says with a smile. Box 4502 Covington, La. 70433 504-451-0688 Federal Tax ID# 26-1257231 Dear Owner, Louisiana Horse Rescue Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to Racehorse welfare and aftercare. Currently the program is funded entirely through the fundraising efforts of committed volunteers, with 100% of funds raised going directly to the horses. We invite you to read more about our organization at www.louisianahorserescue.com. In order to continue our efforts of rescuing, retraining, rehabbing and rehoming retired racehorses it is necessary that the horse racing industry provide a regular source of income to the program. LHRA hereby requests that each owner by virtue of signing their name below, authorize the LHBPA to debit their Horseman’s account as indicated below per start as a tax deductible donation to the LHRA, or an optional other amount as you deem appropriate. Once signed, please return this form to us via mail at the post office address above. Thank you for your help in this matter. I hereby authorize the lHBPa to debit my account ____ $10.00 per start as a tax deductible donation to lHRa. ____ $5.00 per start as a tax deductible donation to lHRa ____ OTHER amount per start as stated here (may be a percentage) ____ One time deduction of $________, deducted from next placing This voluntary deduction is to remain in effect until I notify the Executive Director or Secretary / Treasurer of the lHBPa in writing of my decision to terminate this authorization Owner Signature ________________________________________________________________________________________ Printed Name ___________________________________________________________________________________________ address as registered with lHBPa__________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 40 Louisiana Horse LOUISIANA HORSE RESCUE By Patrick Richmond Hay Hay Hay! I t is that time of year, and all of us at Louisiana Horse Rescue Association are wondering how many horses we will have to prepare for this winter. Every year, we at LHRA have a hay drive (perhaps way less fun than a hay ride, but highly important to us) that allows us to feed our herd some much-needed roughage through the winter. Hay is not the only thing that we can’t survive without, but it is one of the things we need most in the winter. If you have ever been interested in helping us out, now is a great time to do so. Contributions to our LHRA hay drive can be made by visiting our website, and if you have actual hay that you are willing to bring us we’ll take that too. LHRA also has a “Home for the Holidays” adoption drive going on from November through December that allows us to adopt out horses by waiving adoption fees for approved families, making this the perfect time of year for supporters and anyone wanting to adopt one of our horses to take action. If you or anyone you know is looking for a really great horse companion, NOW is the time! As President of LHRA, I always am greatly humbled by the outpouring of support for our organization. I have a great deal of people to thank, possibly starting Fall 2015 with my wife Victoria for putting up with all of the extra horses around here and the seemingly constant website development work! My board of directors, including the volunteer weekend hours put in by our accountant Therese Arroyo and our intrepid Vice-President and SecretaryTreasurer Michele Rodriguez, the good folks at the Louisiana Racing Commission and the Louisiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association for helping us expand and operate our rescue fundraising and racing contributions, the officials at our four great Louisiana racetracks, the LTBA, Louisiana Horse Magazine and last but not least the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine for having our back on everything we ever asked them for. I would like to specifically thank the LTBA for helping us with the Champion’s Day auction. If you would like to donate to the auction, please contact Michele Rodriguez 504-481-2898. These people are part of our allvolunteer organization that allow us to use 100% of your donations to buy food and medicine for the horses in our care. But the absolute most important group of people that I am thankful for is YOU, our supporters who selflessly send us the funds we need to feed our horses. We appreciate you more than you will ever know and we spend your money very wisely – just ask all of the horses in our care. Well maybe all of them except 8-ball. He has been asking for a new pink halter autographed by Tom Early and I just don’t see that happening for him. Please look us up at our website, www.louisianahorserescue.com or our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/lhra1 where we have over 17,000 supporters who help us to get our message out and promote adoptions for our horses. Louisiana Commission Adopts RMTC Rules The Louisiana Racing Commission accepted the Racing Medication Testing Consortium’s model rules for medication. The rules will go into effect for Thoroughbreds beginning in October. The rules, which have already been accepted in part or in full by 15 other states, guide the use of 26 therapeutic medications deemed acceptable to use in racing 52 Thoroughbreds, along with established thresholds intended to prevent those medications from altering performance. Furosemide is the only drug permitted to be administered on race day. For Louisiana racing, the rule adoption will tighten rules guiding the use of anti-inflammatory drugs and clenbuterol, among other changes. Texas to Keep Historical Racing The Texas Racing Commission voted to reject a motion to repeal regulations that would permit historical racing wagering machines at racetracks under its jurisdiction. The commission’s approval last August of historical racing – which began in 2000 at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas under the name Instant Racing and currently exists in several other states, including Kentucky – led to a firestorm of criticism from some Texas lawmakers, including powerful state Sen. Jane Nelson. Nelson, as a member of the Legislative Budget Board, earlier this year pushed to withhold funding from the Texas Racing Commission that would effectively close the regulatory agency and shut down horse racing when the new fiscal year began Sept. 1. As a result of that move, commissioners felt they were being pressured to repeal the language approving and regulating historical racing, and in June they set the wheels in motion for a repeal vote. However, the commission voted 4 to 3 to reject the historical racing repeal, with one abstention. Louisiana Horse In a separate motion, the commissioners voted to formally request that the Legislative Budget Board release the budgetary funds it is withholding. The racing industry fully funds the racing commission, with the Legislative Budget Board acting as a pass-through agency. Oaklawn purses up Oaklawn has released Condition Book 1 for its live race meet that begins Jan. 15, 2016 featuring the richest purses in track history for the eighth consecutive year. Maiden Special Weights will be worth $68,000, an $8,000 increase over where they started in 2015, and open allowance races will be worth as much as $75,000, a $9,000 increase over where they started last year. The minimum purse will be $21,000 in 2016, up $3,000 from 2015. Overall, Oaklawn is projecting total purses of $27 million with an average daily distribution of $475,000 per day. This is a 12% increase over the 2015 meet and a 76% increase over where purses were when the streak of increases began in 2008. Oaklawn, which had previously announced a record $7.55 million stakes schedule in 2016, will open Friday, Jan. 15 and run through Saturday, April 16. KEE Sept Sale Tops 2008 Record Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale closed Saturday, Sept. 26, following nearly two weeks of robust trade that generated solid gains led by a record equaling median price and the sale of 11 seven-figure yearlings. Results reflect a continued trend toward stability in the Thoroughbred market. Gross receipts for the 12-day sale, held Sept. 14-26, totaled $281,496,100, surpassing total sales of $279,960,500 recorded during last year’s 13-day auction. Keeneland sold 2,745 yearlings this year compared to 2,819 in 2014. The cumulative average increased 3.26 percent, from $99,312 to $102,549. The median, a key gauge of a healthy market, remained unchanged from the record $50,000 posted in 2013 and 2014. The gross was the highest at a Keeneland September Yearling Sale since 2008, when 3,605 sold for $327,999,100. The average was the highest since the $112,427 average in 2006. There were 879 yearlings that failed to find new buyers of the 3,624 through the ring, a buyback rate of 24.3 percent. Last year, the buyback percentage was 21.8 (787 of 3,606). The 2015 clearance rate (percentage that sold from the number catalogued, accounting for the outs and RNAs) was 65.9, compared to 67.6 percent in 2014. Buyers continued to be selective in their purchases, as evidenced by the strength at the top of the market. Eleven yearlings commanded $1 million or more compared to 13 Louisiana Horse last year. A colt by leading North American sire Tapit brought the sale-topping price of $2.1 million. For the second consecutive year, Keeneland has sold the highestpriced horse offered at public auction in North America. Those 11 seven-figure yearlings were bought by 10 different entities, a positive indication that the money was spread among a number of buyers. The upper middle market remained strong as 123 horses sold for $400,000 or more and spanned Books 1-4 versus 121 horses in the same range sold in Books 1-2 in 2014. Further evidence of the sale’s strong performance was the fact that in 10 of the 12 sessions, the highest-priced yearling exceeded the top price of the corresponding session last year. Ben Glass, racing manager and bloodstock adviser to Gary and Mary West. bought 26 yearlings for $5,550,000 to lead all buyers in number of horses purchased. Leading North American sire Tapit reigned as top sire by gross at the September Sale for the second consecutive year, represented by 32 yearlings that totaled $16,860,000. Yearlings by Tapit fetched the two highest prices of the sale: One from the family of 1988 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Winning Colors sold to Mandy Pope for $2.1 million, and a second out of multiple Grade 1 winner Pure Clan went for $1.65 million to Lael Stable. A full sister to Grade 1 stakes winners To Honor and Serve and Angela Renee commanded $1.5 million from Justin Zayat to be the sale’s highestpriced filly. All three yearlings were consigned by Gainesway, which stands Tapit, and all sold on the third day of Book 1. Taylor Made Sales Agency was the sale’s leading consignor, selling 256 yearlings for $32,822,200. Since 1988, Taylor Made has topped the September Sale consignor list 17 times. CDI Completes Purchase of Stake in Saratoga Harness Churchill Downs Incorporated (NASDAQ: CHDN) (CDI or Company) and Saratoga Harness Racing, Inc. (SHRI) have completed the previously announced transaction whereby CDI has acquired a 25 percent membership interest in Saratoga Casino Holdings LLC (SCH) for approximately $24.8 million. SCH is a newly-formed entity that includes Saratoga Casino and Raceway in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and a 50 percent interest in a joint venture with Delaware North Companies to manage the Gideon Putnam Hotel and Resort in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Saratoga Casino and Raceway includes the $40 million hotel expansion under construction and scheduled to open late spring 2016. The purchase price remains subject to final adjustments for SCH’s working capital related to the transferred New York operations. Given that regulatory approvals for the transfer of SHRI’s controlling interest in Saratoga Casino Black Hawk in Black Hawk, Colo. are expected to require several more months, CDI and SHRI have amended their purchase agreement to split the closing of their transaction for SHRI’s New York and Colorado properties. Tax Bills Re-Introduced It has been a rollercoaster ride for racehorse owners in terms of depreciation and capital gains in Washington, D.C., over the years. The industry has had to rely on temporary legislative adjustments designed to keep more money in the business through tax breaks. That could be the case again this year for expiring tax provisions, but U.S. Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky is LTBA ANONYMOUS COMPLAINT LINE The number for LTBA members to report someone violating the By-laws in reference to the domicile of mares in the state of Louisiana, has changed. From now on, members can contact LTBA Inspector, Mike Whitler directly. All calls are handled anonymously. You will not be asked for your name or contact number. On Oct. 12 he said he has reintroduced the Race Horse Cost Recovery Act, which would make threeyear depreciation of racehorses the norm rather than seven years; and the Equine Tax Parity Act, which would permanently reduce the capital gains treatment of racehorses to 12 months rather than 24. The bills would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Fiscal impact projections aren't attached to the bills, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association doesn't have the estimates yet, but industry officials have said tax breaks are critical to keeping money in the racing and breeding businesses Trade Deal Helps Bloodstock Exchange After five years of tough negotiation, a new trade agreement among 12 Pacific Rim countries including the United States and Japan was drafted earlier in October. The Trans-Pacific Partnership would affect regulations and taxes on horses imported to Japan, according to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture. Currently importers of foals, yearlings, 2-year-olds in training, and pregnant mares are required to pay ¥3.4 million ($28,175) per horse, regardless of the horse's value. The tax on mares will disappear when the TPP goes into effect, though the ratification process is expected to take about two years. The import tax on young horses will be decreased annually over a 16-year period until it, too, is eliminated. In 2014 Japan imported 31 in-foal mares from the United States, while 39 mares were imported from countries that will not participate in the TTP, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France. As the import tax on broodmares from those European countries will remain, the TPP likely will incentivize Japanese breeders to further invest in U.S. bloodstock. Fall 2015 57 HERE & THERE Antibiotic-resistant gene discovered in soil bacterium that commonly infects foals A research team based in the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine has discovered a novel gene—erm(46)—that confers antibiotic resistance in Rhodococcus equi, a soil-dwelling bacterium that commonly infects foals and causes opportunistic infections in immunocompromised people. The finding was made in collaboration with researchers at the University of Edinburgh, Texas A&M University and the University of Washington. Rhodococcus equi is one of the most important causes of disease in foals between 3 weeks and 5 months of age, said team lead Dr. Steeve Giguère, the Marguerite Thomas Hodgson Chair of Equine Studies at UGA and a board-certified large animal internal medicine specialist. The researchers sequenced the genomes of antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-susceptible R. equi isolates collected from foals in four states. They searched each isolate’s genome for genes with similar sequences to known genes that cause bacterial resistance to the macrolide class of antibiotics in other bacterial species. Through their search, they discovered the new gene, named erm(46) by the Nomenclature Center for MLS Genes at the University of Washington. When the team cloned erm(46) into susceptible R. equi isolates normally inhibited by antibiotics, they found that erm(46) induced a high level of resistance to macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin B antibiotics. They also 58 found that the gene can be transferred from resistant to susceptible isolates during bacterial mating. Their finding, recently published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, is the first molecular characterization of resistance to these three classes of antibiotics in R. equi. So far, Giguère and his team have identified antibiotic-resistant R. equi isolates carrying erm(46) in New York, Florida, Texas and Kentucky—where, on one farm producing 100 to 170 foals a year, as many of 40 percent of infected foals were found to carry resistant isolates. The bacterium is present in soil year-round, but because it typically causes disease only in foals up to 5 or 6 months of age, illnesses typically manifest in spring and summer. “It is believed that most foals become infected through inhalation of R. equi within the first few weeks of life, and they start showing clinical signs of pneumonia between 3 weeks and 5 or 6 months of age,” said Giguère. People may come into contact with R. equi on farms, while gardening or during other activities that disturb dirt; however, it typically only causes infection in immunocompromised individuals. Not all R. equi causes disease in foals. A piece of DNA located outside the chromosome, called a plasmid, is responsible for making R. equi virulent in foals. Variations on this plasmid can be found in pigs and also cattle. The spread of drug-resistant R. equi may be a growing problem, Giguère said. “It’s something that was unheard of 15 years ago, and now we’ve found it in multiple states. We need to conduct a welldesigned epidemiological study to really know the prevalence of resistant isolates across the country.” The team’s study on “Novel transferable erm(46) determinant responsible for emerging macrolide resistance in Rhodococcus equi” is available at https://jac.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2015/09/15/j ac.dkv279.full.
