Raising Young Voices in Song for Over 25 Years! Music Pick Up Night is coming up on August 20! THE TREBLE VOICE Our campers went on a safari this summer and had a great time singing, dancing, and drumming. Look inside to share their experience! INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Music Pick-up Night 2 Mums Fundraiser 2 Concert Wardrobe 2 Chorus Camp 3 Review As our season gets underway again, I hope you have had a wonderful summer with time to enjoy friends and family. I can say the chorus staff has been very busy, both working for FCC and taking time to vacation and travel. Seven of our chorus members sang at George Mason University at the American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA) Voices United Conference Honor Chorus. Mrs. Wardell completed a Master of Education in Kodaly Music degree at Loyola University and participated in a conducting master class at ACDA Voices United. Mrs. Fuhr presented a reading session at ACDA Voices United. She and Blair Hudnell maintained the office while Mrs. Ekanger travelled all over the world, including Maine and Alaska. Mrs. DuBose enjoyed her first summer off in five years, but she was kept busy with numerous projects. Mrs. Fuhr and Ms. Goldsmith recorded the rehearsal CD’s. Ms Goldsmith enjoyed a summer off, visiting her parents in Alabama and going to the beach. Ms. DuBose managed two camps for FCC and assisted with the camp at All Children’s Chorus of Annapolis. Mrs. Jackson (and the family) was treated to a cruise and took several short trips. Ms. Crowder is planning a wedding. We’ve been working hard to recruit new members. Mrs. Fuhr and Delaney Heurich recorded an ad that you may have heard on our local radio stations. We had two very exciting summer camps thanks to our fabulous camp staff: Ann DuBose, Jenna Lebherz-Daly, Anne Tyler, and Josh Caldwell. These four teachers introduced the summer campers to an exciting group of African songs, enhanced with African folk-tales, African dance, mask making, costuming, and drumming. The campers and staff shared their own experiences with African travel, including fabulous photos from a South African Tour like the one FCC has planned. The performance was fabulous and all campers outdid themselves with their enthusiastic singing, drumming, and dancing. Our campers were also invited to sing the concert again at the FSK Mall during the Tots2Tweens Back to School Bash and at WestView Promenade. There is much to look forward to in our 2013-2014 Season. We welcome our new members, and welcome back our returning singers. Our Touring Ensemble will be preparing for several performances with rehearsals beginning in September. Touring Ensemble has been invited to perform in the Gettysburg Children’s Chorus Invitational Festival with the Gettysburg Children’s Chorus in November and Festival of Lights in Frederick in December. Mrs. DuBose has been invited to give a presentation to choral directors in Baltimore at the ACDA Eastern Division conference in February. She will need a small chorus to participate in the presentation. Concert Chorus and Chamber Singers will participate in Maryland Young Voices Festival in Annapolis this year. Touring Ensemble treble singers have been invited to sing in a rehearsal and performance of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff (look it up! click on this link ) in March. There is a section for treble chorus. The Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra (FRYO) and The Frederick Children's Chorus have met and discussed performing together this season. We’ve also scheduled a very exciting all-day retreat in October at ThorpeWood in the Catoctin Mountains. (http://thorpewood.org/) Little Music Makers 4 We’ve begun to look forward to our 30th Season in 2014-2015. We’ve made contact with two composers to plan to have music written for us to perform. We also hope to collaborate again with FRYO. Musicianship/ Concert Dates 5 We still have openings in our Training Chorus and hope you will all help us by spreading the word about our chorus and sharing some of your experiences with school friends and neighbors. Invite them to contact us. All the information they need is on the website (www.fredcc.org). For all of our efforts our Training Chorus is much smaller than we’d like. Calendar of Events 6-7 We look forward to seeing all of you again at Music Pick-up Night August 20 and our first rehearsal on August 27. Happy last days of summer! Sincerely, Mrs. DuBose PAGE 2 Music Pick-Up Night - Tuesday, August 20 Music Pick-Up Night will be held on August 20 at the E&R Church at 11 West Church Street in downtown Frederick. Each group will begin with an annual parent meeting with Mrs. DuBose upstairs in the sanctuary. Go straight up the large stairs at the front of the building and directly into the sanctuary. Please be sure to attend on music pickup night. (The whole process generally takes less than an hour.) Please arrive at the parent meeting 5-10 minutes before the time scheduled for your singer’s chorus: 6:00 Training Chorus—Levels I and II 7:00 Concert Chorus 8:00 Chamber Singers ALL parents are asked to attend! After the meeting, parents and singers will go downstairs to pick up their music and practice CD, get sized for their uniforms, get their seating chart picture taken, etc. (Please Note: Little Music Makers do not need to attend on this date. LMM materials will be distributed in rehearsals.) Singers will be assigned music to practice before the first rehearsal. You are expected to turn in a practice log at the first rehearsal on Aug 27. A practice log will be included with your music packet. Additional practice logs can be printed from the Forms page on our website (fredcc.org). Parents, if you are unable to make this event due to back-to-school night, please e-mail us to arrange to get your singer’s music. Chamber Singers and Parent Volunteers: Please notify Mrs. Ekanger via e-mail at ([email protected]) if you can help with the setup, table manning, and breakdown in the social hall during Music Pick-Up Night. We need help starting at 5:00 and going until 9:00. If you can help for any portion, please let us know! Campers perform at the Westview shopping center. The E&R Church has requested that we NOT use the parking lot behind the church. Please respect their request—do not use Mums Fundraiser For the 11th year in a row, we will be selling mums as our fall fundraiser! This year we will be buying from Behnke Nurseries. Mums will be $7 each and pansies will be $2. Please see your enclosed order form for all the details about the plants. The forms will be due at rehearsal on Sept 10. Pick-up will be on Sept 24 at the Rose Hill Manor parking lot. We will need parent volunteers to assist with setup and delivery from 4:30 until 6:00. The mums will then be available for pickup between 6:00 and 8:00 pm. it for dropping off, picking up, or any other reason. Parking can be found on the street and in the nearby Court Street Parking Garage. Thank you ! Concert Wardrobe All singers will be sized for wardrobe at Music Pick-up Night. The wardrobe will be received in November shortly before the concert. In November, all singers must bring in their concert shoes to be approved by Mrs. Husson. Guidelines for shoes can be found in the Info for Parents document on the website. (They must be matte black and have a very low or no heel.) Those who have grown or may need a slight alteration due to shoes should still be able to take their uniform home at that time. You will then wear it to the concert in December. Training Chorus girls will receive their first uniform blouse as part of their tuition. Any girls who have out grown their first blouse must order a new one at their own cost. Please inquire at the costume table at Music Pick-Up night if you need to do this! (We will also be holding a blouse exchange later in the fall to help eliminate the need to buy new blouses.) Training Chorus boys need to have a button down collared white oxford shirt to wear as part of their uniform. They must also have a pair of BLACK dress slacks, socks and shoes. If you still have any wardrobe from the last concert, please return it on music pick up night. If you have any questions, you may contact Darleen Husson, the Wardrobe Committee Chair at 301-6986176. THE TREBLE VOICE WWW.FREDCC.ORG PAGE Chorus Camp in Review We thought we would jumpstart our enthusiasm for our South Africa trip in 2016 with an African musical themed summer camp this year. Little did we know that we would be putting on the “best camp concert ever!,’ according to several parents who spoke to us after camp. If you missed camp this year, you REALLY missed something special! Both camps were smaller in number than usual but our singers were mighty in sound, skill, and enthusiasm. They learned music so quickly that extra songs had to be added and left-over rehearsal time needed to be filled with more games and movie time. Campers had a blast playing games with Josh Caldwell (aka Mr. Fun). Again this year he brought his own brand of silly to camp and the kids just couldn’t get enough! Mrs. Daly returned again this year too, bringing positive strokes, professional attitude, big smiles, and pipes like no other! We even got to lip-sync to her singing (some of the best unison singing we’ve ever done!). The biggest hit of all, though, was Mrs. Tyler’s drumming workshops and Songs of Gahu! You have never seen faces light up as bright as they did this year when it was time for drumming and dancing! Mrs. Tyler was non-stop rhythm, laughs, and magic fingers. She kept us all on our toes and we couldn’t have achieved such successfully authentic music without her. And Miss DuBose, our camp mastermind, never imagined she’d have so much fun! Campers showed up every day with positive attitudes, lots of energy to burn, and relentless curiosity for what we would do next. They offered not just their musicality and friendship to each other and our staff but they had a big part in lending their creativity to our show. They were true collaborators with great ideas to enhance our performances and wonderful showmanship to bring their ideas to their audiences. Let’s not forget our fantastic camp counselors! Whenever something needed to be done they jumped up and moved with a sense of purpose. They were constantly anticipating our next steps and making sure we were ready without being asked. Whenever there was down time, counselors would ask, “What can I do next?” We could not have had such wonderfully smooth transitions or quite so many fun and intricately planned activities without their help in execution. Thank you counselors! In addition to such a wonderful camp experience, campers from both camps (who weren’t on vacation) joined together on Saturday August 3rd to give two stunning performances for the general public at the FSK Mall’s “Back to School Bash” and outside the Westview Movie Theater. Despite weather delays and lack of electricity at one venue which caused us to have to improvise on the spot, they performed with professionalism and showmanship beyond their age. We are very proud of all the singers who participated and so handsomely represented the Frederick Children’s Chorus! Way to go! Full Chorus Retreat at Thorpewood—Save the Date! This year we have a very special retreat planned. It will be on Friday, October 25. There is no school that day in Frederick Public Schools. We will be at ThorpeWood Retreat in the Catoctin Mountains. Our day will include rehearsals, workshops with guest leaders, and outdoor activities (weather permitting ). Carpool information and additional details will follow in the October Treble Voice. This retreat is an all-day event for all chorus members. Attendance is mandatory for anyone who does not have school scheduled that day. We realize some of our out-of-county and private school students will be unable to attend. The facility has limited availability. We hope to repeat this on a Saturday in the future as the facility becomes available. 3 PAGE Little Music Makers 4 Welcome to all our new Little Music Makers, and welcome back to all our returning singers to this fantastic 5-8 year old program! Registration will be open through the beginning of the first class on Sept 17th. There will be a New Member Orientation on Sept 10 th from 5-6pm. All singers are welcome to attend, but this day is not required. We will talk about the program, explain expectations, have a mock rehearsal and take questions from parents. All LMM rehearsals take place in the Chapel on the South side of the street. See the LMM page on our website for more information. If you know anyone who might be interested, please have them e-mail us as [email protected] for a registration form and more information. This form can also be found on our website. Little Music Makers tuition is $200 per 12 week semester or $350 for the year. Tuition includes instruction, materials and a tshirt. Class size is limited to 20 and we anticipate filling two sections again this year. Reserve your spot now, classes fill quickly. The Chorus in the Community Volunteer committee assignments will be changing some this year. We have re-evaluated our needs for volunteers, so you will be asked to fill out a new volunteer form at Music Pick-up Night. WE will then email you to notify you of your new committee assignment. On August 3rd, a group of our campers from this year’s African Safari themed camp had the opportunity to perform at FSK’s Back to School Bash. The were able to perform several of the numbers they learned at camp through singing, dancing, and drumming. Shoppers were treated to a great concert that morning! The chorus also had a table in the mall’s center court where we were able to make the community more aware of everything we have to offer. The group then moved from the mall over to WestView to perform outdoors in front of the movie theatre. We appreciate the support of all the singers and parents who were able to attend and help out at the concerts and at our table. On September 14, the chorus will be participating in Frederick City’s In the Street event. For over 25 years the In The Street festival has been held in downtown Frederick. The all day festival, spanning Market Street from Carroll Creek to 7th Street, brings food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. We will have a booth where attendees can learn more about the chorus and also participate in a music based activity and craft. We love to have our chorus members support these events and will be asking for your Fall Family Social—Gaver Farm Pumpkin Patch We will be holding our fall chorus family social on October 5th from 6 to 9 pm at the Gaver Farm Pumpkin Patch. If you were able to attend last year, then you know how much fun this event is! The farm’s activities include a jumping pillow, a corn maze, and a great slide. Check out their website for all the details : http:// www.gavertreefarm.com/FallFestival.htm. The event will be $6 per person and we ask that each family contribute a dish to our potluck dinner. We will end the evening with some singing around the bonfire. Bring your guitar if you play! We look forward to seeing you all there! See the attached flier for all the details. Scrip and iGive Fundraising Programs Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every gift card purchased, you earn revenue for our organization. Scrip is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything. Organization members produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. Many families use scrip to purchase holiday gift cards to give as gifts to others. Don't buy them at the grocery store gift card wall, but them through the chorus and we get a cut! Talk to Mrs. Ekanger at Music Pick-Up Night to learn more. Monthly, scrip forms can be found at the Check-In table at rehearsals, or you can email Mrs. Ekanger at [email protected] for the most up to date form. The first purchase deadline will be October 8. We are also continuing our participation with the iGive program. If you shop for anything online, iGive can help the chorus while you're doing your normal shopping! You can either shop directly through the iGive.com website, or you can download their web app which automatically detects if the website you're shopping on is an iGive participant and automatically registers your purchase on the chorus' behalf. If you have any purchases that you plan to make online, please visit www.iGive.com/fredcc to see if your merchant participates, download the app, and see how your purchase can benefit the chorus! Musicianship Classes begin on Tuesday, August 27 and are held in Musicianship Classes Trinity Chapel (across the All singers in the treble chorus and some chamber singers are required to enroll in the musicianship program in order to improve his/her sight-reading and musicianship skills. Sight Reading is a learned and practiced skill. It is valuable to singers and street from the instrumentalists. It speeds the music learning process and enhances a singer’s ability to memorize complex music. Musicianship skills are necessary to sing music written in two or more vocal part, improve accuracy, and a musicianship test is E&R Church). included in every All-State Chorus, college music school, and professional adult chorus audition. Classes begin Tuesday, August 27, 2013. All classes are held in the Trinity Chapel across the street from the E&R Church. Please arrive 5 -10 minutes early in order to sign-in, receive instructions, check off homework, and participate in the warm-up activity. Singers who are consistently late may have to attend additional musicianship time to make up their missed activities. Singers who do not attend musicianship regularly may not be eligible to perform in the concert, as it is part of the contract you sign when you make your annual commitment. The attendance policy for musicianship is the same as for chorus rehearsals. You are allowed 2 absences in the fall and 3 in the spring, for any reason. Any more absences than that will result in needing to be tested to ensure you are keeping up. Like any skill, sight-reading is best learned and practiced at regular intervals. Repetition and drills are necessary. While we expect you to practice the drills at home, we also have fun warm-up activities that reinforce your skills in a game-like setting. We give prizes for achievement in front of the group and help those who try and aren’t immediately successful so they can win a prize next time. Don't be late to class or you will miss all the fun! The cost of musicianship is included in tuition and covers the materials and instructors’ preparation time.
