FromthePastor’sDesk When we look at the world today it is very easy to get upset and ask, “Where are we going?” In our own country we have come to the point in our government where those we elect find it hard to work with other elected people. One party doesn’t trust the other. How can we ever get to where there is peace in our hearts and peace in our world? The last couple of weeks the Gospel passages read at Sunday and Daily Mass have been from the Last Supper Discourse in the Gospel of St. John (chapters 13-17). Here we see Jesus pouring out His heart in love to His disciples on the night before He was crucified. Once He was arrested, from a human point of view, Jesus could easily have wondered, “Where are we going?” The disciples who had been with Him during His three years of public ministry had seen the wonder of His miracles and heard the Good News from His very mouth. But once He was arrested, other than St. John, they all abandoned Him. All the good He had done resulted in an unjust sentence of death and disciples who ran away. But Jesus knew where He was going from there. Death on the cross was not the end of His powerful love and presence. The Resurrection we have been celebrating for the past six weeks makes that so clear. The Resurrection shows us the wonder of Jesus rising from the dead and the unconquerable love in His heart for His followers. All during the Easter Season the first reading at Mass has come from the Acts of the apostles, the account of the first generation of Jesus’ followers after His Resurrection and Ascension. Assured of His love, His followers spread the Good News of God’s love in Him to many different countries of that era. Jesus never gave up. He never stopped believing in His Father and His followers. He never stopped loving the Father or His disciples. That early Church had its persecutions and growth in understanding of God’s love no matter what. The vision of faith opened their minds and hearts to see how they were entrusted with the mission of bringing the Good News to people outside of their religious background. The patience of Jesus is a tremendously powerful part of His love. On May 22nd we are scheduled to have the life-sized replica of the Pieta delivered to our parish where we can come and seek the intercession and follow the all powerful faith of the Blessed Virgin Mary. How sad to see the crucified body of her beloved Son, the Son of God, lifelessly held in her arms. Surely she could have had that human thought of pain, “Where do we go from here?” Her sorrow was quickly changed to joy as she came to see that her Son, the Son of God, had risen from the dead. Now the question, “Where do we go from here?” had a far different answer. No longer was there sadness, confusion, or disappointment. Mary and the beloved disciples were given a new vision of how powerful and loving Jesus really was. His love and presence enabled and inspired them to follow His command “to love one another as He loves us.” At this point in time in the Church right here in our diocese and in our parish we ask, “Where are we going?” We are completing our celebrations of Masses where more than 200 children are receiving their First Holy Communion. On April 30th we had the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation where approximately 200 children received the Holy Spirit in this life-giving sacrament and became fully initiated into and part of the Church. But the sad reality is that at least 70% did not go to Sunday Mass the Sunday before or after Confirmation. The same holds true about our First Holy Communion celebrations. While it is wonderful to celebrate these Sacraments, it is so easy to think that what we are doing to prepare the young people and their families for these Sacraments is not working. Our parish census has more than 6,000 families registered, yet when we count people at mass at different times of the year we average around 3500 people at our seven Sunday Masses. Yes, that is a large number, but a mere fraction of those who claim they are part of our parish. Our culture certainly has taken many people away from regular Sunday Mass. Now there are so many activities to choose from on Sunday that the thought of mass is not even on the list. Days are filled with work, sports, TV, the Internet, the mall, texting, and shopping to name but a few categories. More than our faith enriching our culture, our culture is pushing the faith of so many people into the background. We work hard to prepare our Sacramental celebrations. I always find it an enriching experience to pray the prayers and listen to the readings at them. Our challenge as priests and parishioners is to be reverent, welcoming, joyful, and hopeful. “Where are we going?” More importantly, like Jesus on the cross and Mary holding His lifeless body in her arms, we must be aware of the fact that we are in the mind and heart of Jesus. In the beginning of the four Eucharistic Prayers for various occasions the words of prayer are: “You are indeed Holy and to be glorified, O God, who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life. Blessed indeed is your Son, present in our midst when we are gathered by his love, and when, as once for the disciples, so now for us, he opens the Scriptures and breaks the bread.” We must also be encouraged by the words of St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 3:5-7, “For what is Apollos and what is Paul? The servants through whom you came to believe, and each has only what the Lord has given him. I did the planting, Apollos did the watering, but God gave growth. In this, neither the planter nor the waterer counts for anything; only God, who gives growth.” Simply by living our faith with sincerity each day we either plant or water, leaving it up to God to bring forth the fruit. Like Jesus or Mary we cannot be discouraged by what looks like a disaster but say, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10) and “Let it be done to me as you say.” (Luke 1:38) Masses for the Week Saturday, May 16th: 5:00 PM 8:00 PM Charles & Julia Burns Diane Cassiano Sunday, May 17th: 7:30 AM 9:00 AM 10:30 AM 12:00 PM 5:00 PM People of the Parish Aloysius & Margaret Rienzo Dorothy Thompson Mother’s Day Novena Chuck Wagner, Joan Edlind and Maureen Monday, May 18th: 6:45 AM 9:00 AM 12:10 PM 7:30 PM Alfredo Pulito Leann Fettinger Mother’s Day Novena Charlie McLoughlin Tuesday, May 19th: 6:45 AM 9:00 AM 12:10 PM Leann Fettinger Cathleen Buchanan Leeann Fettinger Wednesday, May 20th: 6:45 AM 9:00 AM 12:10 PM Alfred Pulito Nicholas Solano Nicholas J. Philip Nordstrom On Sunday, May 31st at 2:30 PM, we will unveil a beautiful replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta in our church. In preparation for that very special event in our parish, below is information on La Pieta written by Dr. Peter Angelo, associate professor at Stony Brook University and former St. Patrick parishioner, who was the force behind the decision to bring the sculpture to our church. Michelangelo’s Rome Pieta In 1963, a decision would be made in Rome at the Vatican that would shake the very foundations of the worlds of both Art and Politics. Pope John XXIII, at the behest of Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, made the almost unbelievable decision to send Michelangelo's Vatican Pieta to New York City for exhibition at the New York World's Fair to be held 1964-1965. The decision was earth shattering because the sculpture being shipped to New York from the Vatican not only was the original statue carved by the hand of the great Michelangelo, and prior to this had never left the Vatican, but it would be sent by ship over the Atlantic Ocean where only 50 years earlier, the RMS Titanic had sunk to a watery grave over 2.5 miles deep with nearly all of its precious cargo still on-board. Undaunted by the criticism, the Pope went ahead with his plan to give people from all over the entire world a chance to see this truly magnificent work of religious art that they ordinarily could not see unless they had the financial means to visit the Vatican. As a result, the priceless statue was placed in a water-tight, sealed, steel cargo vault that was secured to the bow deck of the ocean liner, Cristoforo Columbo. Attached to the vault were various sophisticated tracking devices that would be of absolute necessity should the ship and its priceless cargo be in any way compromised by weather, piracy or terrorism. Both the Italian and American Navies served as the protectors and guardians of the huge ship, and were in constant readiness to handle any potential maritime disaster that might possibly harm the ship, its passengers, crew and its famous cargo. In the event that the ship were in danger of sinking, both American and Italian Navy and Air Force Search and Rescue teams were ready to effectively airlift Michelangelo’s sculpture from the foundering vessel while passengers and crew were also being helped to safety. It is sufficient to say that it is nearly incomprehensible that a 22-year-old Florentine man could turn stone into cascading drapery and soft flesh. Michelangelo was originally commissioned by French Cardinal Jean de Bilhires to create the sculpture as his funerary monument in St. Peter's but the statue was later moved to other locations within St. Peter's as the old church was systematically demolished to make room for the new St. Peter's. Michelangelo's biographer, Giorgio Vasari, notes the following regarding this great jewel of sculpture that Michelangelo had hewn out of a flawless block of white Carrara marble: The rarest artist could add nothing to its design and grace, or finish the marble with such polish and art, for it displays the utmost limits of sculpture. Among its beauties are the divine draperies, the foreshortening of the dead Christ, and the beauty of the limbs with the muscles, veins, sinews, while no better presentation of a corpse was ever made. The sweet air of the head and harmonious joining of the arms and legs to the torso, with the pulses and veins, are marvelous, and it is a miracle that a once shapeless stone should assume a form that nature with difficulty produces in flesh. Michelangelo devoted so much love and pains on this work that he put his name on the girdle crossing the Virgin's breast, a thing he never did again. When properly lit from above, the Virgin's down turned face is seen somewhat in shadows and it reflects not only deep sorrow, but an unquestionable resignation to the will of God. With her right hand, she supports the body of her adult son, and with her outstretched left hand, she offers him to the world as its hope and salvation. For those who have seen the sculpture at the New York World's Fair 50 years ago, you are in for an emotional and spiritual treat. The magnificent copy that will be installed in St. Patrick's Church, Smithtown is an exact millimeter-by-millimeter copy of Michelangelo's original. If it were to be installed in St. Peter's, most likely no one would be able to tell this copy from the original. St. Patrick School First Holy Communions St. Patrick School students received their First Holy Communion during two Masses on Saturday, May 9th. Congratulations to Mrs. Spina’s class (above) and Mrs. Bubolo’s class (at left). Next Sunday, May 24th is Pentecost Sunday! WEAR RED!! When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. - Acts 2: 1-4 Defensive Driving Course Saturday, May 30th from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM in St. Patrick School, Room 103 Fee: $48 Please bring a pen and your driver’s license To register or for more information, please call Bill Owens at Safety Education, 845-756-2481. It’s not really “good-bye” as he will only be moving to Nassau County to become associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Merrick. Still, we will miss the day-to-day interactions—the dry sense of humor, the concern for our everyday needs and the deep theological wisdom. Everyone will have a chance to say thank you to Fr. Regan on Sunday, June 7th following the 12 Noon Mass in Canning Hall. St. Patrick parishioners were blessed to have Fr. Regan spend the first years of his priesthood with us and we wish him all the best as he moves on to another assignment. Come and show your gratitude to Fr. Regan! For more information, visit: www.usccb.org/nationalcollections News & Notes from Catholics for Freedom of Religion Supreme Court: The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments April 28th on the question of same-sex marriage. At the heart of the issue is whether the court will recognize a right to samesex marriage that conflicts with the Constitution's protections for speech and religious freedoms. In practice, the rights of homosexuals are trumping religious rights as courts or commissions penalize Christians for doing no more than living by their faith. (www.wnd.com, 4/2015; www.nytimes.com, 4/2015) Christian florist targeted for "personal ruin:" Washington State florist and grandmother, Barronelle Stutzman, employs gay people and serves gay clients. But when long-time customers asked her to create floral pieces for their same-sex wedding, she refused because she could not defy her conscience and lend her creative talent to help celebrate what her faith says she cannot celebrate. A superior court judge has ruled against her saying the First Amendment protects her religious beliefs but not actions based on those beliefs. As a result, Stutzman could lose her business, home, and personal savings. "The message of these rulings is unmistakable: The government will bring about your personal and professional ruin if you don't help celebrate same-sex marriage," said Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel. (www.cnn.com,2/20/15; www.adf.org, 2/2015) We are witnessing a shift in our society -- a shift which inevitably leads to Christians being treated as pariahs at every level of our national life. Louie Giglio's Christian views on marriage got him removed from the President's inauguration. Brendan Eich's support for traditional marriage got him dismissed as CEO of Mozilla. Kelvin Cochran's Christian faith got him fired from his position as fire chief of Atlanta. Two bakers in Oregon had to shutter their business and are now facing bankruptcy for refusing to participate in a gay wedding. The stories are mounting. Who will be next? (www.cnn.com, 2/20/15) “The saving message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ includes the teachings of His church on the profound and inherent dignity of the human person and the nature of marriage as a conjugal bond - a one-flesh union." The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Please continue to say the following prayers each day as we seek God’s guidance, strength and courage Gracious God, we are your people embraced by your love. We thank you for your presence with us throughout all time. Create us anew. Liberate us from that which keeps us from you. Enable us to recreate our world and restore justice. Heal us from every form of sin and violence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Reconcile us so enemies become friends. Awaken us to the sacred; nurture our relationships; enliven our parishes; reunite our families. Fill us with joy to celebrate the fullness of life. Empower us to be a community of love growing in your likeness. Amen. Thank you Father for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus. May my gratitude inspire and sustain me in doing everything I can to respect the lives of all people and to do all in my power to end abortion and everything else that harms, abuses, or threatens human life. Give me the courage and strength to live in your image each day. Amen. Focus Questions: 1. Relate a time when you lived your life behind locked doors. Who opened the door so you could live life fully? 2. Describe a time when you experienced the peace of Christ. 3. What gifts of the Spirit do you experience in your life? How can you use those gifts to build a better world? Children and Family Reflections: Talk about a time when you were afraid. Who helped you overcome your fear? Please pray the following prayer for our brothers and sisters in the Middle East who are suffering terrible persecution for their faith: Lord, the plight of our brothers and sisters is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare their lives to grant them patience and courage to continue their witness of Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life; Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. Glory be to you forever. The symbol to the right (the Arabic letter “N” for Nazarene) is being used to mark Christians in Iraq for persecution. Pray for our Priests Please remember to keep our priests in your prayers. This week we ask that you pray especially for the following priests from our diocese: May 17th—Bishop Nelson Perez May 18th—Msgr. John Martin & Msgr. John Gilmartin May 19th—V Rev. Dom Carr & Rev. Not only that, our parish receives a part of the advertising commission. So please frequent the fine establishments that advertise in our bulletin! If your business could use a shot in the arm, consider advertising in the bulletin. Each weekend, approximately 3,800 people attend Mass at St. Patrick’s, most of whom live and shop in the Smithtown area. It’s an easy way to reach thousands of area families with information about your business. For more information on how to advertise in our bulletin, call Frank Capanzano at 631-987-0064. D. M.
