Aerobic Kickboxing #1 For Burning Calories
Local club offers popular program once reserved for the stars
Los Angles - Muscle and Fitness m agazine, the fitness industry's largest publication,
recently devoted a four p ag e spread (March 1996) to the latest fitness craze, aerobic
(ickboxing. Aerobic kickboxing or Cardio Karate as it's also known, teaches the
echniques of martial arts without all the serious rituals, uniforms and belts normally
associated with the training.
The result is a very popular upper and lower body workout that burns calories in
massive amounts. In fact, Muscle and Fitness rated aerobic kickboxing as the number one
calorie burner with 800 calories burned per hour. Second, with 680 calories, w as
basketball.
According to Mr. Ortiz, who teaches a Cardio Karate program in Bethpage and NYC,
"Cardio Karate is perfect for the adult who is too busy or simply not interested in earning
a black belt. They can dress comfortably and have a lot of fun getting in shape, plus they
learn some really good self defense."
Surprisingly, Cardio Karate has great appeal to women. According to the National
Association of Professional M artial Artists (NARMA), who regulates Cardio Karate
program s for its 650+ school membership, women typically malte up over half of the
C ardio Karate classes around the country. 'These are women who would never put on a
karate uniform and do all the yelling, board breaking and sparring," relates Mr. Ortiz,
"But, when we eliminate all the contact and the risk of injury, women are very interested in
learning to protect themselves while they get in shape."
Indeed, Cardio Karate and similar aerobic kickboxing program s have been very
popular with the Hollywood glamour set. According to In Style m agazine, even Princess Di
includes kickboxing into her training regiment. Other stars who have added some "kick" to
their training include, "Down Town" Judy Brown, Teri Hatcher and Paula Abdul.
