Make Friends Campaign 2013
Every year in March and April we have our Make Friends Campaign, to get positive publicity,
find new members (friends) and raise money for our projects.
Ask your friends, family or neighbours to join EFKF and support us with a
minimum of €10,-. The person who comes up with the most new friends
for EFKF will receive a present! Any new Friend will also get a present:
three English books. See the shop on our website for more information.
The campaign will end with the English Miles.
English Miles
English Miles are scheduled on Thursday 18 April this year. Pupils from different schools will
run one or more miles in Roosendaal City Centre, raising money for our new project in Brazil,
where students will be supported learning English for WK 2014.
This year the English Miles will be organised by 4 students of Johan
Cruyff College in Roosendaal, supported by EFKF volunteeers and a Gertrudis trainee. The
group has contacted schools and companies to run and sponsor the event that will start at
2pm. So get your running shoes and join us!
You can register on www.efkf.org or [email protected]

Mr Herlinde Vrijlandt New Board Member
Mr Herlinde Vrijlandt has joined our EFKF Board in December
2012. She is a judge in Middelburg and looks forward to working
with University College Roosevelt students in that town. She
already arranged a meeting with Dr Wiese, who leads the new
Brazil project in Sao Paulo. During that meeting these two
professionals agreed that it is very important to support
children to learn English, so that they can communicate with
other nationalities. A meeting with the UCR students will be
arranged in the second half of March, to discuss details of the
Brazil project.
Stands at Dag van de Talen & Good Practice Day
On Friday 25 January we had two conferences on one day. In Groningen we had been invited
to the Dag van de Talen, so we asked a local contact, Floor Kuijper, to represent us. It was a
very successful day and Floor made new contacts, who have later mailed us for more details.
In Leiden our volunteer Sylvia Livingstone, who worked for us in India for 3 months, was
present to answer questions and give information.
Thank you both for your support!
Anglia Members Meeting on 13 March
On Wednesday 13 March we will have a stand at the Anglia Members Meeting
in Soest, where teachers of the network will gather to discuss new plans
and initiatives. We will be promoting the English Mile, but will also
take books for sale. If you have any books that you want to offer to us to
sell at this meeting, please let us know on [email protected].
NCE (Nationaal Congres Engels) on 15 March
More than 400 teachers will come to Ede for the two yearly National Congress Engels.
Chair is Christien van Gool, who has been a loyal supporter of EFKF for
many years.
NCE is one of EFKF's sponsors and we are happy to go there again on
Friday 15 March.
If you happen to be there, don't miss our stand. We are looking
forward to seeing you there.

Board Meeting
Next EFKF Board Meeting with Annelies, Wilma and Kim on 22 May 2013. With new activities
and projects on the agenda, it seems a good idea to arrange a board meeting before the
summer holidays, inviting our General Administrator Annelies Verhappen, Projects
Coordinator Wilma Pranger and Newsletter Editor Kim van der Steen, so that we can discuss
practical matters in an efficient way. If you have any items for the agenda, please
contact Annelies on [email protected]
Ideas for International Day of Languages on 26 September 2013?
Thursday 26 September 2013 will be the International Day of
Languages, which we always celebrate with activities. At the
moment, we are thinking of organising 2 days at University
College Utrecht, Games on 26 and Meet&Greet on 27.
However, it might be more sensible to focus all activities on
one day: Thursday 26. We are looking for volunteers to discuss ideas and start a committee
to prepare and work out the plans.
Contact us on [email protected] if you are interested.

Events Organiser
We are still looking for an Events Organiser to support
our trainees and volunteers. We had a very positive
interview with a very good candidate in January, but
she was offered a new job two days later, which she
could not combine.
Tasks of an Events Organiser can be done in 2 hours
per week, mostly advising and monitoring the work
of trainees. It could partly be done from home,
the job does not involve a lot of travelling, but it could.
Please contact Annelies for more details
on [email protected].

PROJECT UPDATES
Books for South Africa
Board Member Jos Blaauwhof visited South Africa last week and delivered 40 books to
Mariette Slabbert, our local con-tact in Elandsdoorn. Thursday 14 March is the start of two
new groups of students in the Netherlands
that will email and pos-sibly skype with the
students in Elands-doorn. For Christelijk
Lyceum Delft it is the first time they are
involved in the South Africa project. Jan
Tinbergen College in Roosendaal has been
working with NdLovu Medical Centre for 4
years and have even visited the project in
2010.
Good luck to both groups!

Extra Support in India
Some people would call it serendipity that Gerda Kappert and Pierre Satijn happened to
meet at our EFKF Conference in 2011. It turned out that these two Dutch Teachers both had
a project in Varanasi.
Two years later, Pierre has returned to the Netherlands, but Gerda is still there, working
hard at her Wallabi School. We have now agreed that Gerda will start supporting the
teachers at Little Stars School as well. We are looking forward to her first reports.

Summer School in Ukraine
Last year Teacher Trainer Sarah Talbot went to Charkiv for EFKF. It was the third EFKF
Summer School in Ukraine and as the project was linked to EURO 2012, we had not yet made
plans for 2013. However, Sarah was very positive about her experience there and is adamant
that we should continue the good work. So she is now teaming up with Alina Lys to prepare
for Summer School 2013. Alina has visited the Ukraine Ambassador for support.
If you are interested in joining the Ukraine project this year, contact us on [email protected]
Football in Brazil
Following our success in Ukraine, we want to support children in Brazil to prepare for
Worldcup 2014. Dr Wiese, who teaches at University College Roosevelt, but lives in Sao
Paulo, has started preparations for a big project next school year.
She will visit the project school in July 2013 to discuss details, so we can get into action in
October 2013.
More details will be presented on our Meet&Greet in September, but if you are interested in
joining this project, please let us know.
New Trainees in Ghana use Cool! English at School
Three new trainees have started in the Ghana project in
February 2013, using the Cool! English at School portfolios
and flash cards. Two weeks before departure they
collected the materials at our office in Roosendaal, where
they were given instructions on how best to use Cool!.
We hope to get their reports and will give you more
details in newsletter 24 on 12 June.
Karlijn and Daisy were in Ghana last year and were very enthusiastic about the Cool! English at School
portfolios.
