Asia is the largest and most populous continent. Point out that
Asia and Europe actually form one landmass called Eurasia but that
they are usually considered separate continents. Encourage students
to take a brief “tour” of Asia by saying what they know about
different countries on the continent. Point out that the highest
mountain (Everest) and the largest lake (the Caspian Sea, which
is salt water) are located in Asia.

Teaching With the Transparency
xplain to students that Asia has tremendous geographic and cultural variety.
Ask a volunteer to come up to the projector and locate Japan on the map.
Then ask another volunteer to locate Saudi Arabia. Ask another student to
find India. Invite students to share what they know about these three
countries and how they are alike and different. Discuss the people, language,
food, culture, and so on.
Divide the class into six groups and assign each group one of the regions of
Asia—South Asia, Southwest Asia (part of the Middle East), Southeast Asia,
East Asia, North Asia (Siberia, Russia), and Central Asia. Have each group list
the countries in their region, then pick one country on which to report. Have
them include interesting facts about the country, its people, and/or its region.
E
To Do
◆
Photocopy and distribute “Asian Population” (pages 26–27) to each
student. Explain that they will color-code the countries in Asia based on
their population. You may want to create a transparency of the outline
map on page 27 and do the activity as a whole class.
◆
Is there a connection between the size of a country’s population and the
size of its economy? To find out, photocopy and distribute “Economies of
Asia” (page 28) as well as the Asia outline map (page 27). Explain to
students that they will be creating another color-coded map, but instead
of showing population information, this map will show economic
information about some Asian countries. Remind students that GNP,
which stands for Gross National Product, is the total value of goods and
services produced by a country. You may wish to go over “billion” and
“trillion” with students to be sure they understand the magnitude of
these numbers. After they have completed the reproducible, have
students compare it with the population map, and discuss the
connection between population and economy.
