Fairmount IN Hometown of James Dean Visit the grave of Hollywood's 1950s rebel heartthrob, then drive into town to view some Dean memorabilia. Fairmount is the hometown of James Dean...and the "James Dean Gallery" houses, which says to be the world's largest collection of Dean memorabilia and archives dealing with the short life and career of Dean. They've got his high school yearbooks, a life mask from Warner's Brothers, all sort of novelty items that were produced featuring his likeness (plates, mugs, busts, puzzles, gum cards...the list goes on). The gallery has a $3.75 admission fee (it's open every day from 10 am to 6 pm, except Thanksgiving, Xmas, and New Year's Day!) The town of Fairmount attracts many visitors seeking out Dean's grave site at Park Cemetery. Many leave behind mementos, including cigarettes (mostly commonly Winstons). Its not uncommon to find his headstone covered with lipstick kisses left behind by his adoring fans. They aren't however, kissing Dean's original headstone, which had a bad year in 1983: stolen in April, recovered that May, and then stolen again for good in August. The stone that sits there today is a replica of the original. Other sites people want to see are the old Fairmount High School, as well as the Fairmount Historical Museum, which also has a collection of James Dean memorabilia. Want to see James Dean's grave site? Park Cemetery Address: 8008 S. 150 E., Fairmount, IN Directions: Park Cemetery. I-69 exit 55.
