cheer on these extraordinary athletes!
Start Line — Sunday

How to use the “Time of Day” Pacing Guide
1. K
now how fast your friend(s) will be running, either by Pace (minutes per mile) or by Finish Time.
2. Find the closest Estimated Finish Time on the chart and follow across the columns to a location near where you want to be.
3. The chart shows what TIME OF DAY your friend(s) should cross the selected
location. Use these times to estimate other locations on the course.
Corral Start: Remember that participants begin in corrals—know which one your
friend(s) will start in and adjust your schedule accordingly when you’re planning your
viewing locations.

There are thousands of volunteers on marathon weekend. Most are not
associated with the event except for one weekend a year, so understand that

Tips for Spectators and Participants

Make the Most of Your Race Weekend
Popular Spectator Viewing Locations
There are activities throughout Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend for athletes,
friends and families to enjoy together. But when the horn blows Sunday morning,
you’ve only got a few hours to find each other along the course and at the finish line.
The easiest way to ensure that you and your friends see each other is to plan ahead.
Here is some advice for everyone on marathon day.
Mile 2
Corner of Douglas and Hennepin, near the Walker Art Center
Mile 4.5
Lake Calhoun
Mile 13.1
Lake Nokomis (half-marathon point)
Mile 21.5
Mississippi River Blvd. hill to University of St. Thomas
Mile 22-25
Anywhere along Summit Avenue
Mile 26
Near the Cathedral on John Ireland Blvd. to the finish line
On the Course
• Map out where you’ll be ahead of time. Use the “Time of Day” Pacing Guide and
course maps on pages 8-11, or use our online athlete tracking systems to project
locations (see page 17 for details).
• Know what each other will be wearing, or carry a sign or balloon. Sometimes it’s
easier for runners to spot spectators than the other way around.
• Pick a side. Communicate where you will be, and watch from the same side of the road. This will help runners see and find you.
• Plan for traffic. Allow extra time to get from one viewing spot to another. Get there early and don’t leave if you don’t see someone right away. Your friend may be having a really good day or a tough one.
• Cheer on other marathoners. It will mean a lot to them!
After the Race
• Runners are routed to the Old Dutch Family Meeting Area (see Sunday detail map).
Favorite Cheers
Clap, shout, and show your support for participants—it’s always welcome. Save the “You’re almost there!” cheer until the very end—a few miles is still a long way for someone who has been running for hours. Here are some favorites.
• Keep smiling!
• One stride at a time!
• Way to go!
• You’re looking awesome!
• Way to focus!
• You rock!
• Running smooth!
• Stay relaxed!
• You can do it!
• Keep it up!
• Way to wheel!, or run!
•W
elcome to St. Paul!
(when appropriate)
•C
all out something
unique about a runner
(bib #, the color or a
logo on their shirt, etc.)
• Set a time and place to meet in case you miss each other at the finish.
• Relax with friends and family in the 27th Mile. You can purchase souvenirs and merchandise and get race results.
14
In addition to shouting your support, bring along cowbells, tambourines, thunder sticks or make a sign. Many cheering supplies are available from sponsors at the Expo.
Please be respectful of private and public property, and dispose of your cheering
materials appropriately.

enthusiasm, and the top three winners in each category will receive a cash donation to their designated charity.
Medtronic Global Heroes
Be sure to cheer for the 2012 Medtronic Global Heroes,
wearing black race bibs. The Global Heroes program
celebrates runners who benefit from medical device
technology. Twenty-five runners from around the world
received a paid entry into either the Medtronic Twin Cities
