Regent’s Notes
T
hirty-seven members and guests came to
the September Chapter meeting at the
Urbana Country Club and enjoyed a
delicious breakfast buffet and an entertaining
program on Blown,
Molded, and Pressed
Glass given by Docentsin-Training Tari Bricker,
Julie Woller, and Carol
Castellon. Members
brought interesting glass items to show and tell,
such as Celia Snyder’s miniature perfume bottle
collection.
We are saddened to learn that our Chaplain,
Nancy Quizenberry, had a relapse of cancer and
decided to resign as Chaplain. Our Bylaws state
that the Executive Board shall fill vacancies until
the next annual election, so the Board appointed
Barbara Vierra to assume the duties of Chaplain
until next May. Our prayers are with Nancy.
The chapter has a new gavel made from the
large tree that once stood in front of the Illinois
Cottage at Tamassee DAR School. The tree
was blown down last year in a storm, and
Tamassee made items (such as gavels) from the
tree and sold them at Continental Congress.
Evelyn Kesler and Virginia McColl
attended DAR Days on September 14. As State
Chairman of Chapter Achievement, I rode the
bus with other State Chairmen and Officers
who presented members with useful
information about each DAR Committee. I will
send this information to Chapter Chairmen.
Hope to see everyone on October 14.
Carol
District III
1800’s Photo Detective
At the October 14 Chapter Meeting, our
speaker, Dwain Berggren, will explain how he
looks for clues in old photos from the 1800’s to
determine the date they were taken. Bring some
of your old family photos from the 1800’s for
Dwain to date! Tari Bricker arranged for Dwain
to speak, but she will be busy with the Piatt
County Barn Tour that weekend! Bring items
for the Chapter Auction, a fun way to add funds
to our treasury! Bring items for the Veteran’s
Hospital in Danville – bring new men’s
underwear & socks, used men’s clothing,
toiletries, and phone cards. Also, Karen Bretzlaf
is still collecting money for phone cards for
active servicemen serving in the middle east.
American War Songs
Three years ago, the Alliance
Musicians Jean Dennison, Mary Bates, Kate
Stout and narrator Julie Woller, presented a
musical program themed around songs that
became popular during wars in America’s
history. Members have requested that the Music
Committee repeat this wonderful program,
which Alliance Chapter will nominate for an
outstanding program award. You won’t want to
miss this program at our November meeting!
Bring soup labels, printer cartridges, and
children’s books to send to DAR Schools; bring
girls items (teenage girls) to send to the girls in
the Illinois Cottage at Tamassee DAR School.
Also, bring hard candy to send to
our soldiers to give to children in
Iraq and Afghanistan.
All Chapter members are invited to attend the District III meeting.
• Meet members from other Chapters in our District
• Meeting starts at 9:30 and usually ends by lunchtime.
• Make new friends.
Friday, November 3, 2006 at Savoy Methodist Church
Lunch cost $9 for a nice meal served by the Methodist Women. RSVP
to Carol Castellon or Lynn Gustison no later than 10/27. The
traditional District Auction will be held to supplement the District
treasury. Please bring/donate some items to be auctioned. You can
come just to the meeting if you don’t want to stay for lunch. Our
District Director is Carole Wylder.
Resolution
Yearbook Corrections
Alliance Cookbook
At the September Chapter meeting,
members voted to draft a resolution to
bring to the State Conference. We have
heard that the Federal Government
does not have a law that guarantees job
protection for Reserve Military who
have been called to active duty. The
Government has a Parental Leave law
that guarantees job protection for
young parents who may take up to 3
months leave-of-absence from their job
to care for a child. We will draft a
resolution requesting the Federal
Government to require employers to
give jobs back to reserve military who
have been called to active duty. Our
resolution will be submitted to the
Resolutions Chairman for the Illinois
State Organization by the deadline
preceding the State Conference next
April. If you are interested in helping
write this resolution, please contact the
Chapter Regent.

Several years ago, the Chapter collected
recipes from members to make a
Chapter cookbook. Julie Woller has
found the recipes and is determined to
get the cookbook put together this
year. But before we print it, we are
inviting members to send in favorite
old recipes with a history of the recipe;
the intent is to include recipes that have
been handed down in the family, but
we will include new favorites also.
Helen Crane
Honorary Chapter Regent Helen Crane
has recently moved to Texas to live
with her daughter,
Mary Ralston, also a
member of Alliance
Chapter. We are
sorry Helen wasn’t
at our September
meeting so that we
could honor her;
however, we’ll have a thank-you card at
the October meeting and ask members
to write a short personal message to
Helen to thank her for her dedicated
service to Alliance Chapter.
Alliance Yearbook Sold on eBay
A 1932 Yearbook was listed for sale for
$10 on eBay last month. National, State,
members and friends notified me of the
listing. I contacted the seller and agreed
to purchase the yearbook. It will be
added to our archives, which are stored
in the Urbana Free Library archive
storage, not available to the public.
Madonna of the Trail Plaque
On September 13, a ceremony was held
for a new plaque that will be placed at the
Madonna of the Trail Statue in Vandalia,
to commemorate the second restoration
during Jane Hooe’s administration.
State Regent Mary Ann Middleton is
holding a paper copy of the plaque that
will be made in bronze. Placement of the
plaque will be determined later. Kneeling
beside her is the mayor of Vandalia.
Chapter Meeting Reservations
For all of our brunches, we call in
reservations on the Wednesday before
the Saturday meeting. The number of
reservations we make is the number we
pay for. If you make a reservation and
do not attend, we ask that you send in
the payment for the amount of the
brunch. Starting this month, we will
bill members who do not honor
their reservations. The Chapter loses
about $500 each year paying for
reservations that are not honored. If
your caller has not called you for a
reservation, please call her or Evelyn
Kesler, and tell her you plan to attend.
We want to be sure to have a seat and a
meal for you if you come!

Campbell’s Soup Labels
Historic Flags Displayed
There is a change in what we save for
the redemption of Campbell’s food
products.
After Nov 1,
we are to clip
only the UPC
codes, and not
the whole
labels or partial labels. Recall, we save
and send these labels to DAR Schools.
http://www.labelsforeducation.com
The Historic Flags that belong to Polly
Myers were displayed at Unit 7 Junior
High during Constitution Week. The
display was arranged by Ellen Stonner,
a DAR member and history teacher at
Unity. We used these flags for our Flag
Day program in June. The set lacks
only one flag of being a complete set
of flags used in the history of the USA.
Delegate Change
A change in the number of Delegates
to Continental Congress was approved
this past summer. We are allowed 3
Delegates in addition to the Chapter
Regent, for voting. Now is the time to
consider whether you’d like to attend
Continental Congress, June 27 – July 1,
2007. Carol Castellon will go and
would be happy to be a Delegate, and
Georganne Marty will go (but probably
already has a vote as Honorary Vice
President General). Since my term as
Chapter Regent will end in May, the
new Chapter Regent should plan to go,
so we can send two more members as
Delegates. The cost to attend CC runs
about $600 if we drive, and about $700
if we fly. If you’d rather ride the Illinois
Bus, the cost is about $1200 and
includes some sight-seeing. If you have
never gone, this is an experience that
will stay with you the rest of your life!
Please seriously consider going and let
Carol Castellon know as soon as you
can so reservations can be made early.
Chapter AUCTION!
Bring some items to the October
meeting that can be auctioned to
members! Your donation of items is a
fun way to help fund Chapter projects,
and you get a
chance to take
home some new
treasures!!!
Thanks to Celeste
Taylor for
suggesting the auction!
Although you cannot see all of the
display case at the end of the hall, we
had a Constitution Week display in the
right side of the case, just out of this
picture. Kate and Virginia Stout also
put up a Constitution Week display in
the Urbana Free Library.
Girls in the Illinois Cottage
There are 9 girls in the Illinois Cottage
at Tamassee DAR School. We will need
to decide, as a Chapter, what we can do
for these girls for Christmas. Nov. is
the month designated to send them a
gift. We sent Walmart gift cards to the
boys in the Illinois Cottage in the past,
and we can do that again, plus we can
collect teenage girl items (like nail
polish, toiletries, etc.) to box and send.
The girls are:
Cheryl, age 14, grade 9
Jamie, age 16, grade 9
Sylvia, age 14, grade 9
Tracey, age 15, grade 10
Kalisha, age 14, grade 9
Nancy, age 16, grade 10
Lea, age 16, grade 10
Tiffany, age 15, grade 11
Samantha, age 14, grade 10
Mrs. Joyce Nichols, Teaching Parent.
The Illinois Cottage
The Illinois Cottage became a reality in
1939, when the Illinois State
Organization dedicated this three-story
native stone cottage for high school boys.
Alliance Receives Awards
State Regent Mary Ann Middleton
presented National Awards to Alliance
Chapter at DAR Days. We were
recognized by NSDAR Constitution
Week Committee for our outstanding
Constitution Week display; by NSDAR
Commemorative Events Committee as
the North Central Division 1st Place
winner for our July 4th parade entry;
and by NSDAR Chapter Achievement
Committee for attaining Level 1
(which is the highest level of
achievement). Thanks to Kate and
Virginia Stout for putting up the
Constitution Week display. Thanks to
Daughters who participated in the July
4th parade, and special thanks to the
Corvette Club of Illinois, Doug
Hanner, President, who made sure we
had corvettes to ride in! And thanks to
all Alliance Chapter Daughters for their
work in attaining National Goals. I am
currently serving at State Chairman of
Chapter Achievement, and am very
proud that my chapter attained Level 1!
Over the years, tremendous
improvements have been made to give
the cottage a home-like atmosphere. The
basement area serves as a recreation
room with adjacent laundry facilities. The
first floor provides a living room, dining
room/study area, kitchen, and staff
quarters. The second floor serves as the
boys' living quarters, with seven
bedrooms and a large bath. An attic on
the third story is used for storage. In
2006, for the first time, the cottage
became the home for 9 girls. Nestled in
the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains
in South Carolina, Tamassee DAR
School provides a residential care
program for school-age children while
they attend local public schools.
