Honouring the Royal Newfoundland Regiment:
Monchy-Le-Preux 100th Anniversary
10 Days: England, France & Belgium
Monday, April 10 – Wednesday, April 19, 2017
April 14, 2017 is the 100th Anniversary of MonchyLe-Preux. A day which stands in history for the
exceptional courage of the young soldiers in the Royal
Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War.
Join us for an exceptional and emotional journey to
honour these men at Monchy-Le-Preux on the
anniversary date; walk the battlefield at Beaumont
Hamel, and explore other sites of Newfoundland's
history in Europe, including the four other caribou
monuments in France and Belgium, and in-depth time
in London.
With historical commentary on-tour by St. John’s –
based author and historian Frank Gogos, a full-time
tour leader, a balance of guided activities and free
time to explore on your own, this tour will deliver an
exceptional experience for you.
With an intimate group size, our tour includes:
 A direct flight to London from St. John’s, return
 Five days and nights in northern France/Belgium, including:
 An anniversary remembrance ceremony at Monchy-le-Preux
 A detailed, guided tour of Beaumont Hamel, and visits to the caribou monuments at
Gueudecourt, Masnières, and Courtrai
 A battlefield tour led by historian Andy Robertshaw
 Other sites of importance to the Regiment, including Amiens Cathedral, and the site of
Tommy Rickett’s VC in Ledegem, Belgium;
 Ypres and area: Tyne Cot Cemetery, Essex Farm and John McCrae’s field hospital,
Langemarck German Cemetery and the emotional Menin Gate ceremony;
 Vimy Ridge, and Arras, France

Three days and nights in London based in a central hotel, including guided sightseeing, planned
visits to sites of importance to Newfoundland and The Regiment around London, the Imperial
War Museum, Churchill Cabinet War Rooms and free time, before our return to St. John's.
 A copy of Frank Gogos’s book “The Royal Newfoundland Regiment in the Great War”, an
excellent resource in preparing for our tour.

$5195.00: Includes direct Air Canada flight
from St. John’s to London, return. (Flight price
good until Dec 31, 2016, and may change based
on Air Canada’s flight pricing.) Per person and
based on two people sharing a room; or
$4295.00: Land only (flight extra), per person
and based on two people sharing a room. For
those that wish to have different flight
arrangements, fly from a different city or start
earlier/stay later. Flight prices and bookings
from other cities can be provided.
$1000.00: The additional hotel room charges
for a single person room. Limited availability.
About Us:
Frank Gogos is a St. John’s native and a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Frank
is active with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s Advisory Council, and the Royal Canadian
Legion. He has guided numerous tours to Newfoundland battlefields, memorials and cemeteries in
Europe and Gallipoli, including the Legion’s annual pilgrimage tour delivered in conjunction with the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador..

Planned Itinerary (subject to change)
Day 1 - Monday, April 10: Depart St. John’s
Day 2 - Tuesday, April 11:

Arrive London; transfer to Lille, France on the Eurostar and check in to hotel in Arras area.
Day 3 - Wednesday, April 12:

Beaumont Hamel & Gueudecourt, Possible cemetery stops nearby such as Ancre, Auchonvillers
and Mailly-Maillet, the burial site of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s Lt. Owen Steele.
Day 4 - Thursday, April 13:

Caribou memorial at Courtrai; Ledegem and D’Hondt Farm, site of Tommy Ricketts’ VC; Tyne Cot,
Langemarck German Cemetery, Essex Farm and John McCrae’s Field Hospital. Free time in Ypres
before the Menin Gate Ceremony.
Day 5 - Friday, April 14 – GOOD FRIDAY:

Monchy-le-Preux 100th Ceremony. Vimy Ridge and Cabaret Rouge Commonwealth Cemetery.
Other visits will be added as timing is finalized, including the possibility of visiting Wellington
Quarries in Arras.
Day 6- Saturday, April 15:

Caribou memorial at Masnières. Amiens Cathedral. Planned battlefields walk and other visits and
free time as schedule permits.
Day 7- Sunday, April 16 – EASTER:

Transfer to London (via Eurostar from Lille). Hotel for 3 nights planned in the Southbank area,
along the Thames with views of St. Paul’s Cathedral and near Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
Visits planned during our time in London over April 16, 17 and 18:
 Wandsworth and Brookwood Commonwealth Cemeteries
 Beatrix Potter School
 Imperial War Museum
 Churchill Cabinet War Rooms
 A possible visit to Aldershot-Salisbury Plain (time permitting)
