Introduction
The Department of Persian was established in
1864. Persian was introduced as a discipline at the
Postgraduate level in 1981. Dedicated teachers
have given their best to the Department. Research
and creative activities are counted among the
fortes of the Department.
Highly qualified and eminent academicians have
been engaged by the Department to meet the
challenges of advanced courses.

In order to promote research culture in the
Department of Persian, various research groups
have been formed, which are as under:
l Mysticism
l Persian Language
l Persian Literature
l Ethics
l Iqbaliat and Modern Persian Literature
Majlis-e-Tehqeeq-o-Taleef-o-Farsi
Majlis-e-Tehqeeq-o-Taleef-e-Farsi has undertaken
important research projects and has published a
number of books on Persian Language and
Literature. These publications have research value
and have been appreciated by scholars from
Pakistan and abroad.
The Renowned Scholar Prof. Dr. Zahir Ahmad
Siddiqi (Distinguished Professor) wrote 05 books
t i t l e d : “ R a s o o l - e - R e h m a t ” , “A a i n a - e Iran”,”Khanqa Nashini wa Khirqa Poshi-e-Sufiah”,
“Ilm-o-Ishq Khawab-o-Kashf-o-Kiramat Sufia ki
nazar me”, “Asrar o IIm-e-Haroof Awr Fun-eTareekh Goi” in 2012. In 2013-2014 he wrote
“Farsi Adbiyat Kay Chand Pehlu”, “Tashakhus-ePakistan Aur Farsi Adab” & “Allama Iqbal Aur Farsi
Zuban-o-Adab”, Deen-o-Adab Aur Fikr-o-Fun
Iran Mein”, “Tasawwuf jadid Muashray Mein”,

Facilities
Seminar Library
The Department of Persian has some rare Iranian
Department of Persian
books and Encyclopedias (like Iranica, Britanica) in
its rich collection on Persian Language and
Literature.
The Department also provides
facilities like micro-film reader, audio-visual aid,
computers and internet to its students and
researchers.
Centre For Iranian Studies
The Centre for Iranian Studies (Utaq-eIranshenasi) has been established at the
department of Persian. A room in the main building
has been renovated by the Cultural Centre of the
Islamic Republic of Iran in Lahore.
Special Features
Research Journal
The Department publishes its research journal
“Kawish” which is well received by research
scholars in Pakistan as well as abroad.
Majlis-E-Sufi Tabassum
The Majlis is a literary society of the Department. It
holds literary functions regularly and is very
popular among the students of the University.
Academic Links
The Department of Persian has signed MOU's with
the following Universities and Institutions of Iran to
conduct Research, exchange information, library
material and publications:
l University of Sistan and Balochistan, Zahidan,
Iran.
l Ferdowsi University of Mash'had, Iran.
l Kitab Khana, Mooza wa Markaz-e-Asnad
Majlis-e-Shooraiey Islami Tehran, Iran.
Students and faculty exchange programmes have
also been launched with these universities and
institutions.
Career Scope
Qualified students of Persian have a number of
career openings. They can join the teaching
profession and also work at cultural centres. They
can join the Civil and Provincial Services.
Electronic and print media also offers vistas to our
graduates.
