What Manner of Man is This

FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH
VOLUME 8, ISSUE 4 / APRIL, 2014
What Manner of Man is This::?
We have recorded in Matthew 8:23-27 the miracle of Jesus calming a raging storm on the Sea
of Galilee. As the disciples, who were seasoned fishermen and familiar with storms, pondered
this miracle and the One who had just performed it, they could only marvel and say, “What
manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” This phrase is only found six times
in the New Testament and literally means, “how this differs from all others.” The specific meaning in this passage is,
“Oh how this man, Jesus Christ, differs from all others!”
This month I feel led by the Lord to preach a four-part series entitled, “Son of God.” The series seed thought came from
the recently released movie by the same title, “Son of God.” In an increasingly Bible-illiterate culture, strangely there
seems to be a growing desire among many to know more about the Bible, its stories and characters. While the renewed
interest is a good thing, I am somewhat concerned about the accuracy of the movie scripts to the biblical storyline.
Basically, April’s series will be a study of Christology, the doctrine of Christ. In all areas of our Christian lives it is
essential that we be grounded in the truth of God’s Word. In no area would this be more essential than in what we
believe about Jesus Christ, the central figure of the Christian faith. We will be discovering the uniqueness of Christ in
several areas of His life and ministry: His birth, His person, His life, His death, His resurrection, His ascension,
exaltation and present ministry on the behalf of believers. Truly, Jesus Christ differs from all others!
I am confident that by showing His uniqueness, we as believers will gain a renewed understanding and appreciation of
why He means so much to us. Why we:
 Love and adore Him so
 Worship and praise His name
 Look to Him and trust in Him as we face life’s challenges
 Fellowship with Him through prayer
 Desire to share Him with the world
 Anxiously long for His return
For those who don’t know Christ as their personal Savior, our desire will be for them to come into a personal
relationship with Him. Jesus made this promise in John 12:32, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men
unto me.”
That is our ultimate goal this month in our pulpit ministry: by lifting up Jesus Christ, we desire to draw people to Him.
“And straightway he preached Christ...that he is the Son of God” (Acts9:20),

Another Year of Faith Promise
Wrapped Up
Having just wrapped another Missions Conference,
we wanted to encourage you with an update on the
missions giving of FBC and some exciting news.
Our Faith Promise budget for the 2013-14 year was
$68,400. Our church family gave $72,184—monies over
and above tithes and offerings. Not only that, but another
$8,191 was given towards special projects or love
offerings, like the $800 that was donated to fund Rich
Moeller’s clothes dryer once he gets to Scotland. God is
good...all the time!
As of the printing of this newsletter, Faith Promise
commitments for the 2014-15 year stand at $52,806, with
another week left to turn in cards. At our annual missions
business meeting on Sunday, April 6th, at 6:00 p.m., we
will be budgeting those commitments to support our
missionaries.
Friendship was also able to give to special projects
throughout the year. These are special needs that arise such
as vehicle or medical needs, or travel funds. Since our last
report of special projects in September, here is a list of
needs we’ve had a part in providing for our missionaries:
$250—Mark Williams van fund
$9600—A Christmas gift of $400 to each of our
missionaries for personal wants/needs
$1000—matching grant donation to Baptist Bible
College
$250—Linda Fitzgerald/Germany, love offering
$250—Janet Curtis/Chile, love offering
$250—vehicle repairs for Dale Peterson/Gospel
Alive
$100—Jeff Kessler, AWANA missionary, love
offering
$250—Jeff Christian/Russia, love offering
$250—Carol Elkins’ van fund
$500—February Baptist Bible Tribune offering
$435—sponsorship of missionary wives to Elevate
2014 conference in Europe (Bob Hines/
iMap)
Our exciting missions news is that Rich Moeller is
waiting to hear any day that his visa paperwork to enter
Scotland has been approved and he will be able to book his
airfare. Be in prayer for his final preparations for getting to
the field. So many of his on-field needs have been met due
to the faithful prayers of his sending church family.
Kristian Rasch also has an exciting opportunity
coming up this summer as she heads up a missions team to
go to Zambia and work with the Ngombe Needs Care
center. They will be helping orphans with their school
work, ministering to them creatively, and supporting HIV/
AIDS caregivers as they serve local patients. Friendship
will be taking up a love offering to help with her travel
costs in the weeks to come.

Answering Life’s Hard Questions, Bringing People to Church
While there are a vast number of born-again Christians, only a dismal
two percent evangelize or invite people to church on a regular basis. This
great apathy contradicts Christ's call to seek and save that which is lost.
Many Christians have the Gospel hidden in their heart and understand the
need to share with others, but for some, the most difficult hurdle to jump is
starting the conversation.
Christians are afraid of being asked a question they do not know the
answer to. As a result, many opportunities to share the gospel with
unbelievers are overlooked. In today’s hectic world it’s easy to miss out on
the incredible plan God has for us because we’re afraid a conversation
could take too much time.
TrueLife.org cards allow the starting point to be easy! They simply
say: “I hope you can visit my church, but if you are not ready, please go to
TrueLife.org for free video answers.” If a difficult question is asked, the
believer can use the back of the invitation card to easily direct the
unbeliever to the website for free video answers to their questions.
Saying something about Christ to a stranger is better than saying
nothing at all. If there are just three seconds to interact with someone, a
TrueLife.org card can be easily offered and received.
In the coming weeks, the FBC family will be challenged to use the
cards pictured at left to invite people to church or to the website to find
answers. At TrueLife.org they will not only see free videos on many
topics, but they will be able to look up Friendship Baptist Church and
further, find a link to our website.
