ThinOS Localization
INTRODUCTION
With the release of ThinOS version 7.1_033, support for administrator-defined user interface languages
within ThinOS was added. Administrators can now change preset translations or create their own
translations to meet the needs of their users. ThinOS supports loading localization files from a central file
server (using FTP, HTTP or HTTPS) and control these files via INI configurations as described below.

AVAILABLE MESSAGE FILES
Wyse ThinOS version 7.1_033 made available the following .MSG files:
*Chinese Simplified.msg
*Chinese Traditional.msg
Dutch.msg
English.msg
French.msg
German.msg
*Japanese.msg
*Korean.msg
*Double byte languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) also require that a font file be included.

NEW DIRECTORY STRUCTURE
To implement a new language, you will need to create the following new directories or folders:
\Wyse\WNOS\Locale
\Wyse\WNOS\Font
The “Font” folder is only necessary if you are using Chinese, Japanese or Korean Languages
NEW WNOS.INI PARAMETERS
You can define a single or multiple languages. For a single language use the following parameter:
Locale=Language
Examples:
Locale=French Load=Yes
For this language to be enabled you will need to copy the file named “French.msg” under the
WNOS\Locale directory. Note that the parameter only requires the filename, not the MSG extension
Or
Locale=”Chinese Simplified” Load=Yes
For this language to be enabled you will need to copy the file named “Chinese Simplified.msg” under the
WNOS\Locale directory and the “Chinese Simplified.fnt” file under the WNOS\Font directory. Note that
since the name in this file has a space, it must be in quotes.
To include multiple language support, use the following parameter:
LocaleList=Language1, Language2, Language3, Languagen
Example:
LocaleList=English, French, Dutch, German
For these four languages to be enabled you will need to copy the files named “english.msg, French.msg,
Dutch.msg and German.msg” under the WNOS\Locale directory Using this option will allow the end user
to switch the system language between English, French, Dutch and German.
WHY ARE SOME MESSAGES DISPLAYED IN ENGLISH?
One thing to notice is that not all messages inside the language file have been converted to its native
language. If you happen to get a message in English, you can open the appropriate MSG file with a
standard text editor and find the specific message and translate the message. Care should be taken with
any special characters on the line. These include “& % and spaces”.
DO I NEED TO COPY ALL THE FILES?
No you don’t. You only need to copy the MSG and FNT files to support the languages you need to use.

WHAT IF I NEED SUPPORT FOR OTHER LANGUAGE?
If your particular language is not included, you can copy another language file, rename it and edit the
message with your local language. Example:
Copy the English.msg to MYVERSION.msg (the MSG file can have any name you choose), now you can
open the MYVERSION.MSG file and edit the required messages. You can use one of the translated files
as an example. Please note that you should not have the same message listed twice in a file.
Remember that you will need to include the new message file in the Locale=language.msg line
HOW DO I EDIT THE MSG FILE?
The MSG files have two columns, the left column indicates the call name and the right column indicates
the displayed message. Let’s take a look at this:
The following table shows the original line in the English.MSG file and how it looks in the French, Dutch,
German and Spanish (no included) files:

As you can see, the left column remains unchanged, and should not be edited. The only portion you
should edit is the right column, which is the message displayed to the end user.

In this example you will notice that the”&” is kept in every language. The message files are not only use to
display messages, but also for most of the configuration screens, which are mostly exposed to
administrators only.
CAN I CREATE MY OWN FNT FILE?
No, the font files are not editable. If you think you need a font file to support your language, please
contact your local Wyse Systems Engineer or Wyse Technical Support for assistance.

WHAT IF MY LANGUAGE IS NOT DISPLAYED CORRECTLY?
If for any reason your language is not displayed correctly, you may need a font file to correct the problem.
Please contact your local Wyse Systems Engineer or Wyse Technical Support for assistance.
CAN ALL WTOS-BASED DEVICES USE THIS NEW LANGUAGE FILE?
The use of these files is not limited by device, it is a feature that was added to firmware version 7.1_033
and it will be available to all devices that support that version or above.
ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW

BIOS Messages cannot be localized.

Not all events in the event log can be localized

Not all messages in the MSG file have been translated

Localization files are version sensitive, since the interface may change between versions, but you
can copy your specific language file and then make any other changes as required.
