ST. JAMES, GEORGETOWN
Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 11, 2007
In response to an attempt to ridicule his teaching about life after death, Jesus
again proclaims “resurrection from the dead” (Luke 20:27-38 [27, 34-38]) that
life is indeed stronger than death itself (2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14). This is our
only eternal consolation and final hope (2 Thessalonians 2:16 — 3:5). It is only
then that our joy will be truly fulfilled (Psalm 17).
All of us have wondered, at some time or another, what heaven might be like,
what might await us beyond the “gates of death,” or even if there is anything there at
all. Today’s Gospel reminds us, however, that our God is a God of the living and not a
God of the dead, that there is an eternal life which is expressed in our belief in the
Resurrection. In the last sentence of the Creed we pray, “We look for the Resurrection
of the dead and the life of the world to come.” We believe that Christ has gone before
us through the “gates of death” and where he has gone, one day we all hope to follow.
As regards what heaven might be like, our human minds are too limited to understand. St. Paul says, “Eye has not seen or ear heard, nor has it entered into the mind
of man what God has prepared for those who love him.” To believe in a heaven, to
accept that there is an after death experience, to believe in a Resurrection, should all
show itself in how we live out our lives now. This would mean that we respect human life and other people. Anything that disregards or diminishes human life is an
affront to God who creates all life and has offered himself in sacrifice for us and has
won eternal life for all his followers. We believe in the God who made us for life and
to live life to the fullest. We were not made to bring an assault on life.

Padre John Cantwell
LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura — Los siete hermanos y
Dios (2 Macabeos 7:1-2, 9-14).
Salmo — Al despertar, Señor, contemplaré
tu rostro (Salmo 17(16)).

enfermos.
devoción a Cristo crucificado y 3)
