Santa Monica Quilt Guild P.O. Box 5514, Santa Monica, CA 90409 May 2017, Volume 27, Issue 8 Meeting – Wednesday, May 3 Note: Our meeting will be in the Fireside Room. President’s Comments “May Day” has been celebrated throughout Northern Europe for millennia. Ancient peoples, Anglo-Saxons, Druids and Celts celebrated Beltane, a spring festival to welcome the yearly return of the warmth of the Summer Sun. Traditionally the day marked the beginning of Summer and it was celebrated with all sorts of high-jinx. Then the Romans came along; bringing with them the spring festival of Flora, goddess of Flowers. The holiday for Flora coincided with Beltane, and the festivals were combined into one, May Day, celebration of summer sunshine and flowers. What the heck does all that have to do with the Santa Monica Quilt Guild? Well, we will be celebrating our “May Day”, on Saturday May 20th @10:30am- noon, with our annual “New Member Elevenses and Garden Party”. I will be hosting the event, so come, spend time in my “Quilted Garden” and enjoy the fellowship of other quilters. The “SOS” and “Sew Wednesday” mini groups have volunteered to bring goodies and quilts for a Show & Tell. A light lunch will be served for those who can stay past noon. Membership has sent individual invitations to our new members. Guild members are also welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Allison Leong [email protected] or Sheila Cummings [email protected] or myself [email protected] Carpooling is encouraged; if you need directions email me. Thanks to everyone who made our Fabric sale so successful and to the SCCQG for the “Meet the Teacher” event, which is always very informative and provides a great show case for the teachers. “Razzle-Dazzle”, our opportunity quilt, made its first public appeared at Meet the Teacher. Now, it needs to get out and about. Volunteers are needed to take it to local shows and events, Contact Kennalee Mattson [email protected] to volunteer. See you all at the May 3rd meeting and looking forward to the May 6th workshop. Maureen Gardner Program On May 3rd, our speaker will be Jennifer Rapacki, whose topic will be "Creativity Unleashed: Modern Technology for Quilters". Jennifer will share her experiences and designs using Adobe Photoshop, EQ, etc., along with inkjet printing on fabric. Many sample of quilts will be shown along with a few quilts created with traditional techniques. On May 6th we will have a workshop with Jennifer, entitled "Weave That! Quilt Background with Peekaboo Flower", that combines fabric weaving with a reverse applique technique. Visit her website at www.jenniferrapacki.com. We have a number of speakers lined up for the balance of the year. Take a look at the guild calendar at the back of the newsletter to see who we have booked to date.
