DID YOU KNOW? Do you know why the Church celebrates All Saints and All Souls? All Saints, traditionally celebrated on November 1st, is a day where we celebrate the lives of all who are in Christ. We are all called Saints because of Christ’s death and resurrection. Yes, Saints are ordinary people, like you and I who, in our day to day lives, are loving, and serving others all in His name. On All Souls Day, (November 2nd) we call to mind all the faithful Saints departed who are now with God in Christ Jesus. We especially remember all those who have touched our own lives, and the men and women of our own Parish of St Paul's whose services have sustained and enhanced the ongoing life of our Christian community, and the wider community. Today many churches, like ours, celebrate All Saints and All Souls on the first Sunday in November. It is certainly a time for giving thanks to Almighty God for the witness of those who have gone before us, and those who are still walking with us. We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshiped you, whether in brush arbors or cathedrals, weathered wooden churches or crumbling cement meeting houses where your name was lifted and adored. WORSHIP NOTES Hearing Assistance: Devices are available at the sound booth. Cell phones and pagers should be turned to silent. Washrooms: Located on the main floor of the Education Wing and downstairs next to the arena area. MEMBER OF THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN CANADA November 6, 2016 Welcome to Our Worship Service We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise; manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil, strong hands and those gnarled with age, holy hands used as wave offerings across the land. 465 Henry Street, Steinbach MB R5G 0H1 204-326-3758 Fax 204-326-2548 email: [email protected] www.stpaulsteinbach.org We thank you, God, for hardworking saints; whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, head ragged or aproned, blue-collared or three-piece-suited they left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come. Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. Bless the memories of your saints, God. May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love. "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:1-2) Children in Worship: We welcome and encourage children to share in worship. Even very young children see faith in action as we pray, sing and commune together. Children’s lessons are available at the side entrance. If children become restless, there is a quiet room at the back of the church. ST. PAUL’S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF STEINBACH INC. It is a day in which we mourn our losses, both recent and long term. Hear the words of Hebrews 12:1-2 Hymn: “For All the Saints” - # 422 v. 1-2 We will now light a candle for all those who have been buried through the ministry of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church since the last celebration of All Saints Day. Reading: Isaiah 61:1-3 Hymn: “For All the Saints” - v. 3-5 At this time it is appropriate to come forward and light a candle to commemorate any one whose life had an impact on you. PRAYER OF THE DAY: L. Let us pray together. ALL: Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. SECOND READING: Ephesians 1:11-23 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. 15 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. L. The Word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation: “Alleluia” (sung) - p. 205 Alleluia! Lord and Savior, open now your saving word. Let it burn like fire within us; speak until our hearts are stirred. Alleluia! Lord, we sing, for the good news that you bring. Hymn: “For All the Saints” - v. 6-7 HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 6:20-31 GOD’S WORD: Reader Kym Martens Congregational response after the announcement: Glory to you, O Lord. FIRST READING: Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18 1 In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: 2I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, 3and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. 16I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: 17‘As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. 18But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever—forever and ever.’ L. The Word of the Lord. C. Thanks be to God. 20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 ‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 ‘Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. ‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 ‘Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. 27 ‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.’ L. The Gospel of the Lord. C. Praise to you, O Christ.
