While I will miss my friends at Longview, I’m thrilled to be working for a library again. It has been a privilege and an honor for me to work in service to this community for the past (nearly) eight years. I’ve consistently been impressed with the way the residents and tenants of Longview come together to create this very special neighborhood here on South Hill. I’ve watched as you’ve welcomed new people to the fold, looked out for each other, and worked together. You may not think anyone has noticed the little things you do for each other and for the betterment of this community, but trust me, your efforts have been seen and appreciated. I hope you will take the new DCR Director under your wings as well, and make sure he/she sees how special Longview is, and understands the importance of showing the greater community as well. Thank you for all you have taught me in my time here. Gratefully, Kerry 7 Spiritual Life Calendar Sunday, April 2 10:30am Catholic Communion 2 pm Protestant Worship –Rev. Amen.” ~Leunig Today is a gloriously sunny, light-filled day. Still cold, given the wind, but the sun is out, slowly warming up the earth and we too. One of our amaryllis bulbs is about to bloom, and two more are on their way. The geese have been returning, with a small flock nesting in the cornfield across the street. And yesterday, I saw “Snowdrops” for the first time this year; those lovely, little white flowers that are usually the first to appear as harbingers of spring’s imminent arrival! Halleluiah! And just in time. The high holy days of Easter and Passover are almost upon us. Both are celebrations of God’s amazing love for us, a love which leads to liberation and new life; one through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus the Christ, the other through the exodus from slavery into The Promised Land. It is a season of awe, of Mystery, of unbounded life, and hope. One of my favorite stories of this season is that of Jesus raising Lazarus from death. Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha, all of whom are close friends of Jesus, fell ill. Mary called for Jesus to come, but he delayed, and when he arrived, he learned that Lazarus had died and had already been in the tomb for four days. Jesus, bereft, calls Lazarus forth from the tomb, raising him to new life. What has always spoken to me is what he does next. He turns to those who have gathered to bear witness to this miracle saying, “Unbind him and set him free.” It is those words that come to me again, today. This is the call of both Passover and Easter. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, a wisdom teacher and leader in the Jewish community says that Jews today do what they can to alleviate the poverty and suffering of others because of the Exodus, because God led them from slavery to liberation and as God’s people, they should go and do likewise. Similarly, as followers of Jesus, Christians are called to see and hear and reach out to the poor, the suffering, the outcast and disenfranchised, the “others” that many would prefer NOT to see, to bring hope and healing, new and renewed life. Indeed, in this season where together we celebrate the amazing gift of life and God’s abiding and liberating love, we are all called to do what we can to serve such Life. So, this month, we will do what we can: Wednesday, April 5th, at 2pm, we will have a Celebration of Life Service to remember the lives of beloved residents who have died in the previous months. I love leading these services, finding them humbling and inspiring. It feels so very important to remember, to honor the lives and very beings of these beloved friends, neighbors and family members. Wednesday, the 12th, Retired Cantor, Richard Rosenfield will be here to lead all and any who wish to come in a model Passover Seder. You will find more information on the Seder below (3pm in the Auditorium). Continued on next page 11 Spiritual News by Barbara Rhudy Fr. Carsten Martensen will be here at the beginning of the month to offer confession and lead Mass (Monday, April 3rd). Please note that there will be no Protestant Communion this month given a scheduling conflict. My apologies! There will be Catholic Communion Easter morning and Ms. Susan Spear, a lay leader from Forest Home Chapel, will be here to lead Protestant worship that afternoon (2pm). Here, at Longview, we will honor these days in worship and song, in prayer and ritual. At the end of the month, Sunday, April 30th, in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, Dani Novak, accompanied by his wife, both of whom are children of Holocausts survivors, will be here to share about Zenda Novak’s journey. 7pm in the Auditorium. (More info below) Throughout the month the Exploring the Psalms Class with Dani Novak and/or Rabbi Eli will continue on Mondays, 2:15pm in the IC Classroom, hymn sings on Thursdays, Welcoming Shabbat and Bible Study on Fridays (Chapel, 6:30pm) and our regularly scheduled Sunday worship activities. I hope you will come and find your spirits nourished and renewed as we enter into this season of new life, graced by these great gifts of God. Glad to be journeying with you~ Barbara PASSOVER Passover, an 8 day festival in the Jewish Tradition, commemorates God’s liberating actions in the exodus from slavery in Egypt.” This year it begins Monday, April 10th at sundown. It is a festival rich in rituals that invite Jews to “relive and experience the true freedom that their ancestors gained.” The Seder is perhaps the heart of the Passover festival. It is done at home and is an imaginative and hands-on-way of teaching the children of their history as God’s people. It includes eating matzah –“the bread of affliction,” bitter herbs“to remember the bitter slavery endured by the Israelites;” drinking wine/grape juice to celebrate their freedom, and reciting the haggadah, a liturgy that describes in detail the story of the Exodus from Egypt - and singing! Richard Rosenfield will lead us in a model Seder, Wednesday, April 12th, at 3pm in the auditorium, concluding in time for you to go to dinner. It promises to be rich, inspirational, educational and fun. It promises to be a blessing! Honoring Holocaust Remembrance Day with Dani & Haya Novak ~ A “Stretch Your Spirit” offering Dani Novak's mother, Zdenka Novak, was born in 1919 and was 21 years old when Zagreb, her home town in former Yugoslavia, was invaded by Germany and everyone in her family died. She managed to escape to a territory ruled by the Italian facists and hid there for 2 years, from April 1941 until September 1943. When Italy capitulated, Zdenka joined the Partisans and lived with them in the woods until the end of the war. Zdenka wrote a book about her war memories. Haya and Dani Novak, her daughter-in-law and son, will present Zdenka's war story based on that book. ALL ARE WELCOME! In the Auditorium, Sunday, April 30, 7pm. 12 We’re lucky to have so many good neighbors here at Longview. A crowd gathers as the lead clown CANIO beats his drum and invites them to the performance that evening. NEDDA, his wife, has a lover, SILVIO, in this village which Canio suspects. “Come then, let the opera begin!” Alone, putting on his makeup… he muses bitterly that a clown’s face cannot mask his heart-break… but… the show must go on. The commedia dell’arte setting of the playwithin-a-play commences: “Columbine and her lover Harliquin are interrupted by her husband Pagliaccio… hears the promise of a rendezvous as Harliquin exits through the window… parallels an earlier event too terrible for him to bear. He demands to know the name of Nedda’s lover, stabs her, and when Silvio rushes up, he meets the same terrific knife! Canio, realizing he has committed a double murder, turns to the audience and sobs, “The comedy is finished!” Pagliacco– its most famous proponent, Enrico Caruso, sang the role of Canio 83 times at the Metropolitan Opera and 43 on tour, and his best-selling Victor record of “Vesti la giubba” (Laugh Clown Laugh) resounded on thousands of phonographs around the world. Here, he beats the drum calling all opera-lovers to join us for our OneAct Opera festival! During this project, the contractor in conjunction with maintenance will need access to most areas of the main building including the Garden level. Office space, storage areas, classrooms, common areas and inside Assisted Living rooms are all on the list. Externally, the parking lot lighting will also be converted. The contractor is set to begin on Tuesday April 4th. I'm asking for everyone's input so we can avoid interfering with any important functions throughout the building. If you have any request for scheduling the conversion in any areas of the building please don't hesitate to notify me. The project can be scheduled around important functions as well. It's important to us everyone is comfortable with the timing in all areas of the building. The initial conversion will begin with the 4ft. fluorescent bulbs- these are found in stairwells, common areas, storage rooms, office space, classrooms and laundry rooms, to name a few. I can be reached for questions or request by email or at 607-379-2207. R. Ricardo 17 Editor: Kelsey Dinmore Contributors: Kerry A.
