Number crunchers
reveal maths talent
By Eva Tejszerski
IT WAS a clean sweep of awards
by St George and Sutherland Shire pupils
at the 2013 Number Crunchers
mathematics competition.
The annual statewide event at the
Powerhouse Museum tested children’s
skills through rounds of tricky questions.
More than 2000 pupils from 55 Sydney
schools entered the contest.
Four pupils from St George and Shire
schools were the last ones standing
among the 30 finalists competing for the
grand champion title.
The search for mathematical excellence
saw students perform impressive feats of
memory in reciting pi to hundreds of
decimal places, or completing jumbled
Rubik’s cubes in lightning-fast times.
The overall winner was Reece
Fessopoulos of Connells Point Public
School. Roland Cheung of Kingsgrove
Public School was the runner-up.
Anthony Watt-Smith, also of Connells
Point Public, was the Golden Pi
challenge champion. He recited pi to 588
decimal places.
The Rubik’s cube challenge winner was
Caringbah High School student Ryan
Wong, who solved the cube in 24
seconds.
The competition, organised NSW
Public Schools began with the Golden Pi
competition at Sylvania High School in
2008 between four primary schools.
It was initiated by the then
mathematics head teacher, the late
Andrew Taylor.
Mr Taylor lost his battle with a brain
tumour in February this year.
The competition was renamed Number
Crunchers in 2010, when it expanded
into more schools.
This year’s competition was compered
by radio host and maths enthusiast
Adam Spencer.

SYDNEY Technical High School
student Tandee Wang competed
in the NSW final of the Legacy
Junior Public Speaking Award at
the Art Gallery of NSW on
October 28. Tandee, a finalist in
the competition last year,was one
of eight finalists this year.
Students were judged on their
word choice, elocution, pace,
solid arguments and their ability
to engage the audience. The
award encouraged participants to
develop confidence in public
speaking and use of language to
convey their message and point of
view.
The Legacy Junior Public
Speaking Award has been a part
of Sydney Legacy program for
youth for the past two decades.
The NSW Department of
