Disturbing Details Alleged in Tomah Hearing
Madison – Wednesday, State Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette) released the following statement
regarding new findings concerning the Tomah VA scandal:
“It is deeply troubling that David Houlihan, former Chief of Staff at the Tomah VA Medical
Center, is alleged to have been under the influence while practicing medicine. Not only has his
medical license been reinstated by an administrative law judge after the Medical Examining
Board (MEB) had revoked it, but now he is thought to have been impaired while treating our
state’s veterans.
“As Wisconsin actively works to fight the prescription opioid epidemic, examples of
overprescribing continue to hurt our progress. Houlihan’s license should have never been
reinstated after the MEB had it revoked. I firmly believe that the judge who decided David
Houlihan should be permitted to continue practicing medicine has made a huge error in
judgement.
“With this new information about Houlihan’s alleged drug use, I applaud the MEB’s decision to
continue their investigation and I look forward to hearing the results. The utmost priority is to
ensure our veterans receive quality care. Moreover, I look forward to continuing our efforts to
fight Wisconsin’s prescription opioid epidemic.”
