Keep Christ in Christmas.
You have likely seen this catchy phrase on bumper stickers or church signs this
Advent season. I agree with the sentiment, that the birth of Jesus Christ is truly
the reason for our celebration and our joy. However, for Catholics, I think there
is a more appropriate expression of this.
Keep the MASS in Christmas.
The word “Christmas” is a shortened form of the Old English expression, meaning “Christ’s Mass”. Long before being associated with reindeer or sleigh bells,
Christmas was de!ined by 2 things- the birth of Christ and coming to Church for
Mass. All the things we now associate with Christmas- from songs to spiral ham
to wrapped presents- were always secondary to attendance at Holy Mass. There
were several other celebrations that had similar titles, like Michaelmas (the
feast of St. Michael the Archangel on September 29). These names were intentional reminders to come to Mass and bring all others with them. Let us all prepare well for the coming of our Savior and to celebrate with Him in the Holy Sacri!ice of the Mass next weekend. May we be inspired to invite friends and family
to join us at Mass on this Christ-Mass.
Please note, we will not have Mass at the usual weekend times for Christmas
and Mary, Mother of God on January 1. The schedule follows our normal Christmas Mass times, which are below.
