Our teams had been training hard and a lot of preparation went into the event. As the champions for the last two years we were confident that we would do well, and as the tournament had been extended to two days in total, we knew that we would be able to make use of the depth of swimming talent at our school. The day before the event the coaches met to discuss rules, during which, a fateful decision was made. This year’s tournament was going to compete in divisions; Under 13 Boys, Under 13 Girls, Age 13 – 14 Boys, Age 13 – 14 Girls, 15+ Boys and 15+ Girls, with trophies for each division. The overall trophy in the past was given to the team with the greatest number of overall points. However, this year the decision was to give points for position in the divisions, which would in turn count towards the overall trophy. As it turned out, the decision to use this new method was not so good for the Stonehill Tigers! The other ISACI schools, International School of Hyderabad (ISH), Mercedes Benz International School, Pune (MBIS), and the British School, New Delhi (TBS), arrived on Thursday and at the end of the day went home with their homestay hosts. With teams of up to thirty per school, this meant that we had to host up to ninety students. With the generosity of our parents this was achieved easily, and all guests had a lovely time staying with new friends. On Friday morning the event kicked off with an opening ceremony in the MYP courtyard where guests were officially welcomed by a speech from Nitya and Vinicius, as well as a great rousing song written and performed by Ms. Mary McCaulay and the P8 students. Afterwards swimmers headed to the pool where another opening ceremony included a song delivered in fine form by Oto and Aishwarya and a fantastic performance by the Stonehill Mermaids Synchronised Swimming Team. The swimming events started off with heats, and the finals were held in the afternoon once swimmers had a chance to regain their energy and have a light lunch. The standard was fantastic, with some excellent swimmers from the four schools giving their all in order to get the best results they could. The sheer grit and hard work was inspiring to watch and it wasn't long before competitors were hoarse with shouting for their favourites to win. At the end of the Friday, there were a lot of very tired swimmers; however, after a supper at school excited children headed off to their homestays. Though curfew calls were made to ensure everyone was OK at 9:00pm, most of the swimmers were already in bed and asleep by then! Saturday was the same format as Friday, with heats in the morning and finals in the afternoon. Despite the exertions of the previous day, students gave their all and did their utmost to achieve their best. There were some very close battles with the winner’s medals going to students from all schools as the tournament progressed. At this point it was too close a call as to who was winning overall. At the end of the day, there was a race to finish before an ominous black cloud turned into a storm, and students headed to the cafeteria for results and announcement of the trophies. Stonehill did a fantastic job and the real depth of the swimming talent at the school meant that we finished with a much larger total points tally than any other school. Despite this, we were unable to win a divisional trophy – in three categories we missed out by one point! This meant that overall we didn't get the winner’s trophy, and had to settle for Second Place. This was sad considering that our totals were so much higher than the other schools; but, rules are rules and we have to work within them! All swimmers should be very proud of their achievements, just as am I. We have a fantastic squad of swimming student athletes and their commitment and hard work was beyond reproach throughout. I would like to thank everyone who made this event possible. A lot of staff gave up considerable amounts of their own time in order to ensure the events success, as did the school's support staff and parents who opened their homes to visitors from the other ISACI schools. Best regards, Simon McCloskey Primary Principal Learning in P2 The P2 class has been learning about measurement. They have been finding out that we can measure things in a variety of ways using non-standard units. We have been having a lot of fun measuring different things in and around our classroom. In our garden we have planted Sunflowers and over the next few weeks we are going to measure how much they grow. On Tuesday 2nd May we visited a local farm. We are learning about how we interact with animals and the importance of them to our lives. We found out a lot about how to be responsible towards animals and how animals are used within our daily lives. We also visited a local pottery and watched how pots are made using clay.
