ear up some newspaper into small pieces and
soak these in a bowl. When well soaked, squeeze
as much water out of the paper as you can so
that you are left with a pulpy mash. Mix this paper
pulp with glue or paste and shape the mixture into a
ball. Press your thumb into the middle of the ball to
form a depression. This is where the candle will be fitted in. Let the candleholders dry thoroughly. This may
take two to three days. Once dry, paint
the holders as you would like and then
lacquer them with varnish.

Watermelon juice
his is a wonderful way to beat the heat.
Remove the rind and seeds of a watermelon and chop it into pieces to give
you two cups of juice. Add two cups of water,
two tablespoons of sugar and the juice of half
a lemon. Blend until smooth and then strain
into a jug. Add some ice cubes when serving.
If you don’t want to use
a blender, an easy way of
getting the juice is to grate
the watermelon over a
bowl. Either mashing the
fruit with a fork or grating it
is the way the juice was
squeezed out before people
