Tobias 2 Award of Merit Dr. Ben Balevi Dr. Pamela Barias Ms. Melanie Crombie Mr. Samson Lim Ms. Elaine Maxwell, CDA Dr. Jan Versendaal Dr. Eli Whitney Award of Merit This award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to CDSBC, beyond basic volunteer participation. Dr. Ben Balevi Ben has been a champion of evidencebased dentistry at CDSBC since first volunteering in 2011. He is a member of the Registration Committee and has served on the Quality Assurance, Sedation and General Anaestheic Services, and Governance committees. He was a passionate and well-spoken member of the Board from 2012-16. Ben received degrees in engineering and dentistry from McGill University. Following his dental residency at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, he completed a master of science in Clinical Epidemiology / Evidence-Based Healthcare at the University of Oxford in England. Before establishing a successful practice in Vancouver, Ben practised dentistry in Ontario. His clinical practice has included treating patients with special needs and those in rural villages and remote regions of northern Ontario. Ben held an academic post at the University of Toronto’s School of Dentistry and currently teaches at UBC. He is a peer-reviewed author and has reviewed publications for numerous scientific journals. Ben currently sits on the board of the American Dental Association’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry. When Ben is not working, he can be found cycling, skiing and hiking with his wife, Susan, and their dog. He plays hockey and still hopes for the big call up from the Vancouver Canucks. Dr. Pamela Barias Pamela began volunteering for CDSBC in 2012 as a member of the Registration Committee. She recently completed a two-year term as the Specialist Board Member. Prior to her CDSBC commitments, Pamela served on the Vancouver & District Dental Society board and currently maintains a board position with the Dental Specialist Society of BC. Pamela is a board-certified specialist in prosthodontics. She received her dental degree from New York University College of Dentistry and completed a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Lutheran Medical Center in New York City, where she earned the award for Excellence in Implant Dentistry. She then went on to complete her specialty degree in Prosthodontics at University of Illinois at Chicago, where she furthered her training in conventional and implantsupported restorations. In addition to private practice, Pamela is a staff prosthodontist at the BC Cancer Agency and remains active with continuing education and mentorship. Pamela is blessed to have loving support at home from her parents, husband and her toddler son, Oliver, who already shows great potential in perceptual ability and hand dexterity. 3 Award of Merit This award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to CDSBC, beyond basic volunteer participation. Ms. Melanie Crombie Melanie served as a public member on the CDSBC Board from 2011-16. She was the public representative on the Nominations, Governance, and CDA Certification committees. Melanie has been a leader in non-profit organizations in British Columbia for over 30 years. She was the executive director of the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Arthritis Society and the BC Paraplegic Association. At each of these organizations Melanie’s leadership and vision enhanced the creation of relevant, powerful services for their client groups through thoughtful strategic thinking and plan development. Prior to leading non-profit organizations, Melanie earned a strong track record as a fundraiser, program developer, social planner and teacher. Mr. Samson Lim Committee from 2013-16. Samson is an accomplished Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) and award-winning business executive. He was a public member of the CDSBC Board and the chair of the Finance and Audit Samson holds a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from UBC and the CPA, CA designation from the Chartered Professional Accountants Association. He has over 30 years of experience in various industries, education and public associations. Samson was the chief financial officer at Citizens Bank of Canada, associate vice-president of finance 4 at Vancity, divisional controller at TELUS, and an auditor at Deloitte. In addition to large corporate entities, Samson has experience in smaller entrepreneurial endeavors, professional networking associations, and teaching. Samson is currently the executive vice-president and chief financial officer at Peoples Group and a board director at three rapidly growing financial and payment services companies in Canada, as well as a bank in the United States. In recent years, Samson was named a CFO of the Year by CPA BC. Outside of work, Samson stays healthy and spends time with his wife and two children. He enjoys cycling, skiing, watching movies and live theatre. He has an affinity for automobiles, and looks forward to annual vacations with his family. Ms. Elaine Maxwell, CDA Elaine has been a volunteer at the College since 2008, where she has served on several committees and the Board. She was the chair of the CDA Advisory Committee, vice-chair of the CDA Certification Committee, and served as a CDA representative on the Board from 2010-16. She is currently a member of the CDA Certification Committee. chair-side assistant, receptionist, orthodontic assistant, instructor of dental assistants, and clinical assistant and coordinator of the Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic in Saudi Arabia. Elaine has been a certified dental assistant in Kelowna for over 40 years. Throughout her career she has worked in a variety of positions, including Elaine currently works in an orthodontic specialty practice in Kelowna. Her spare time is taken up with gardening, sailing, quilting and grandchildren. In addition to her CDA certificate and orthodontic module, Elaine has an Instructor Diploma and works as a substitute instructor at Okanagan University. She also teaches the Orthodontic Module at Okanagan College in Kelowna. Elaine volunteers for her local associations and was the regional director and vice-president of the Certified Dental Assistants of B.C. Dr. Jan Versendaal Jan began volunteering at CDSBC in 2012. He was a member of the CDSBC Board from 2012-16 and continues to serve on the Quality Assurance Committee. Jan received his dentistry degree from the University of Alberta in 1985. Since then, he has practised in Red Deer and Jasper, Alberta, and in Inuvik, N.W.T., and Valemount, B.C. In 1987, he opened a practice in Pitt Meadows where he continues to work today. Prior to volunteering at the College, Jan gained experience in dental regulation as the president of the Fraser Valley Dental Society and as a board member for the BC Dental Association. Jan enjoys spending his free time with his lovely wife, Val, and their four children. His hobbies include scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, woodworking and model railroading. 5 Award of Merit This award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to CDSBC, beyond basic volunteer participation. Dr. Eli Whitney Eli was the UBC Faculty of Dentistry board member from 2010-16. He was a member of the CDA Advisory Committee and working groups for specialty recognition and strategic planning. Eli is currently a member of the Facial Aesthetics Working Group. Eli received his dental degree from the University of Alberta in 1993. He practised general dentistry for three years before returning to the university as a teaching fellow in oral diagnosis, later becoming a clinical assistant professor. In 2000, he moved to Vancouver and became the first resident in UBC Dentistry’s Oral Medicine-Oral Pathology Residency. teaches oral medicine and pathology and is the director of the Oral Medicine and Pathology Postgraduate Specialty Residency training program. In addition to teaching, Eli treats patients in Vancouver General Hospital’s Department of Dentistry and at the Mary Pack Arthritis Centre. He is a former director of the VGH Dentistry Orofacial Pain Program. He also maintains a private oral medicine practice in Vancouver. Eli is a past president of the British Columbia Society of Oral Medicine and Pathology and the Canadian Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Medicine, and an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Eli lives in Vancouver with his wife, Angela, and their two sons. He loves to keep active and is trying to learn to touch type and play golf. Dr. Erik Hutton Erik has been a volunteer with the College for over 20 years. He has attentively served the Board as both a member [1992-94] and a Board Officer. He served as Treasurer from 2012-14 and VicePresident from 2014-16. He is a former member of the Discipline Committee and former chair of the Governance Committee. He is a member of the Inquiry Committee and the Finance and Audit Working Group. Erik was born and raised in Chilliwack, where his father practised dentistry for 44 years. He received his dental degree from UBC in 1983 and has practised dentistry in Chilliwack ever since. Throughout his career, Erik has been a committed member of the RV Tucker Cast Gold Study Club. He is a Pierre Fauchard Academy Fellow. In addition to his work with the College, Erik generously gives his time to different organizations. He was the president of the Fraser Valley Dental Society and organized its golf tournament for many years. Erik has been a Rotarian for over 20 years and is a Paul Harris Fellow. Erik continues to practise dentistry in Chilliwack where he lives with his wife, Bev. He enjoys spending time with his two sons, Mitchell and Graham, and his current hobbies include travelling, golf and a glass of good red wine. Dr. David L. Tobias David first became involved in organized dentistry in 1987. Since then, he has been an active participant and leader of CDSBC committees, subcommittees and working groups. He served the Board from 2010-16 assuming the roles of Treasurer, VicePresident and President. David is currently the chair of the Nominations Committee. 8 As President, David represented BC at the Canadian Dental Regulatory Authorities Federation (CDRAF), and co-chaired its future planning committee and the search committee for a new executive director. He was influential in the creation of the International Society of Dental Regulators, of which CDSBC is a founding member. David remains the Board’s representative at CDRAF. David is a third-generation dentist. He received his dentistry degree from UBC in 1984 and a Masters of Dental Science in 1994. He has practised dentistry in Vancouver for over 30 years. David began teaching at UBC in 1988 as a sessional lecturer and consultant in Prosthodontics. He is currently a clinical professor and is coordinator of occlusion and articulation courses. David’s accomplishments have been recognized by numerous fellowships and awards from dental organizations, including CDSBC’s Award of Merit in 2002. David is an avid golfer and classical music enthusiast. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Rosalind, and their three children, Emily, Max and Sam. honoured member award This award is presented to individuals who have made remarkable, broad-based contributions to CDSBC over a sustained period of time, having significant impact on the College.This award may be for service that is provincial, national or international in nature. Dr. Robert (Bob) D. Coles Bob is a past president of the College, who began volunteering in organized dentistry over 25 years ago. His involvement began when he joined a handful of dentists who led the movement to transition the College into a purely regulatory body and initiate the creation of the BC Dental Association. Since then, he has served on several committees, most notably serving as vicechair of the Regulatory Review Task Force which brought changes to the way CDSBC regulates BC’s dentists and CDAs. His most professionally rewarding experience came in 2015-16. In a year-long project, and at the direction of the College, Bob mentored a colleague one-on-one to help him improve his abilities and meet the College’s professional standards. Bob was a member of the CDSBC Board for 14 years. He began as a Member-at-Large in 1998. He served as Vice-President from 2008-10 and President from 2010-12. Bob is enjoying retirement with his wife, Kim, at his side. He spends his time crabbing and kayaking from their home in White Rock, and golfing and cursing in Palm Springs. His favourite time is spent snowmobiling at the family cabin with their four children and two grandchildren. Since retiring, Bob has taken up blogging, made two submissions to NASA, and has quietly started his latest hobby – making moonshine! In addition to his work at CDSBC, Bob represented BC at the Canadian Regulatory Authorities Federation (CDRAF) for five years, and was the first BC dentist to sit on the executive committee of the CDRAF, serving for three years. He was first recognized by CDSBC for his work with the Regulatory Review Task Force in 2004. Bob’s ongoing commitment to the College has also been recognized with an Award of Merit and the Distinguished Service Award. Among his other awards, he is extremely proud of his President’s Award from the BC Dental Association. Bob earned his dental degree from UBC in 1986.
