Human Environment Interaction
Dependency:
http://learningtoteachintherealworld.blogspot.ca/
-
-
Humans depend on this environment for basic necessities, such as water,
food and shelter
-
A clean and healthy environment provides humans with clean water, and good food.
-
Shelter can only be made with wood and other supplies, which are found in the
environment
Also, depend on Galiano to make money, and keep working
-
Tourism is their largest industry, and employs the majority of its citizens. Successful
tourism is only possible if the environment remains beautiful enough, for visitors to come
and want view this.

Human Adaptation
Over the years humans have had to learn to adapt to the environment to stay
at Galiano, respectively and safely. A few examples are
-
Because of the wildlife, all the trash cans and recycling bins, are made in such a way, that
animals cannot open them.
The roads are paved in a way, that reflects the environment which is why they have many hills
and sharp turns. If it wasn’t paved this way, paving a road there would be impossible.
The docks are also made so it’s possible for humans to be able to reach their water vehicles,
without having to swim to where their boats are anchored.
The campsites have covered areas, because humans understand this coastal region has many
rainfalls
There is also a water treatment system, to make sure the drinking water is safe
Human Modification
Humans have not always been able to adapt to the environment, and have had
no choice but to modify it, for example..
-
Paving roads, because vehicles would otherwise have a hard time getting
around the island
Clear some forest areas to make room for human activities (meeting place
in Montague Harbour)
Install outhouses to keep personal hygiene
Clear trees, and creating pallets to make it much easier for people to camp
Throughout the process of deforestation, wildlife was probably greatly
affected and many living things suffered the loss of their habitats

Humans and their movement at Galiano

First Nations peoples have inhabited this Island for over 3000 years.
Hul'qumi'num speaking peoples lived here
They were threatened by small-pox in the 1780’s but due to settlers lost their land claims fully by the
1860’s
Galiano was first explored by Spanish explorer, Dionisio Galiano in 1792.
This is where it was named from in the 1850’s
Islanders came to look for gold, or jobs in the lumber, fish or farming industries.
Population during the winter is about 900, but can reach up to 2500 in the summertime due to tourists and
summer vacations.
Most of the population comes from old families, retired seniors, or people trying to escape the the city.
