Going green with Paxton Access
Leaving on electrical appliances like lights and
air conditioning wastes money and harms the
environment. Install Energy saving readers for
your customers, and help them make savings.
Compatible with Switch2 and Net2, the energy
saving reader’s cover is designed to retain
a user’s card. When a card is placed in the
reader, its presence toggles a relay that allows
connected equipment to be switched on. When
removed, the relay toggles back and turns the
equipment off.* Lights and air conditioning
etc. are guaranteed to switch off after use as
users have to remove their proximity cards for
normal access around a site.
The energy saving reader is wired into either of a Net2 control unit’s
reader ports. A Net2 control unit can support a proximity reader, an exit
button and the Energy saving reader. In the Net2 software, relay 2 is set
to toggle mode for the Energy saving reader. When a card is inserted or
removed from the reader an event is generated in the software.
With a Switch2 system the energy saving reader requires a dedicated
control unit. You will also need a relay toggle card which is available in
the PROXIMTY function card pack. The Energy saving reader is boxed
with black and white covers.
* If switching a mains load then a mains rated relay should be used.
Applications
The Energy saving reader can be used to turn on tennis court
lights. When players remove their membership proximity
cards these lights will turn off automatically.
The Energy saving reader can be used to control
showers. This will help to prevent the waste of
water and the energy used to heat it.
The Energy saving reader can be fitted to vehicles
and hazardous machinery so only trained operators
with authorised proximity cards can use them.

The Marine exit button
Makes a lasting impression
Closely following the launch of the PROXIMITY marine reader is the
brightly lit Marine exit button. Manufactured in marine-grade stainless
steel the porthole style design will adorn luxurious yachts, designer
offices and all buildings where aesthetics are paramount.
The exit button is continually backlit by an inner and outer circle of green
light making it highly visible at night. Simply touching the lens unlocks
the door allowing the user to open it. While open the exit button flashes
green.
The marine exit button, with no moving parts, is not susceptible to
mechanical breakdown and is highly desirable for exit points in constant
use. Its contemporary design will give departing visitors a lasting
impression!

Endemol Productions, London
Possibly best known in the UK for producing Big Brother and Changing
Rooms, Endemol are a successful company with a very professional
image. A major production company with Europe-wide coverage, the
UK operation is on three floors of a refurbished building in Shepherd’s
Bush. Security is very important to Endemol and they had historically
used manned security on their offices to protect them from casual
intruders and ensure those people gaining access were authorised.
Danny Chapman, the facilities manager at Endemol, explained, “This
did sometimes cause difficulties. Due to the nature of the business, we
do have a high turnover of different individuals. Quite a few of the staff
are freelance production people and will only be coming to us for the
duration of the production they are working on. This meant that the
security people would quite often ring me in the evenings and weekends
to check that they could allow certain people in.”
With the move to new refurbished premises it was decided to investigate
electronic access control systems. There are several entrances to the new
offices and it is a multi-tenanted building. It was very important to ensure
only Endemol staff had free access. Michael Rothwell of Mercury Security
Systems was asked for advice. A demonstration of Net2, an access control
system manufactured by Paxton Access Ltd., was set up in Endemol’s
old building. The facilities management team were impressed with the
evident simplicity of using the software and the features available. They
decided to go ahead and have Net2 installed on the new premises.
Once Mercury Security Systems commenced the installation, Danny took
on the responsibility of setting up all the users and running the system
in the initial period. Danny says, “The software was very easy to learn
being Windows based. In fact I have now handed the daily management
over to our human resources department and having not touched it for
months, I would feel totally confident in picking up and running with
it again. I trained the human resources staff and they also found the
administration very easy to learn. At most I would say they spend half
an hour on administration a day. This is mainly time spent issuing new
cards and barring access for cards issued to non permanent staff who
have moved on or lost cards.”
Initial set up of just over three hundred staff took Danny about a day and a
half. Endemol use a lot of the features available on the software including
time zones and access levels. Danny gives these examples, “Big Brother
production staff must have access to the building and their production
area twenty four hours a day. The Big Brother team are the only people
set up with access on the entrance to their area. Our cleaners only have
access from 5pm - 9pm and only to limited areas of the offices. We also
have some staff set up with individual access rights according to the
requirements of their work. It has given us a high degree of flexibility in
the control of access to our premises and restricted areas within them.”
Endemol have complete confidence in the security provided by their
new access system. Danny would have no hesitation in recommending
Net2 to other business users. The flexibility of the system combined with
the cost savings achieved, mean Net2 has been a good investment for
Endemol. “Our security costs have reduced substantially.”

From the Front
November 2007
Many of the phrases from the lexicon of business
vocabulary set my cynical circuits cracking and
fizzing when I hear them. One used at me
recently was “value add.” It was employed as a
noun, which is challenging for a start. It makes
you wonder whether you can have some value
add on your toast. Does it have a hyphen? I
have spent some time and not inconsiderable
deductive effort in working out what it means.
All companies have basic things that have to
be done in order to make them work efficiently.
Things like answering the phone, having goods
that customers want in stock and being able to
despatch them. Value add is a set of services
over and above these things like offering
financial services, crèches at trade counters,
dog training, and time share apartments in
Lithuania. All of these extras sound wonderful,
but I have noticed a fatal flaw. All companies
that witter on about value add seem to ignore
the basic things in favour of their pet new
Value Add Project. There really is a correlation.
A perfectly functioning company will have a
new initiative to add value and six months later,
everybody is wondering why loyal customers
have left them for the competition, and why
there is a Border Collie in reception.
The fact is, all companies, Paxton Access
included could greatly improve the level of the
products they make and services they provide.
It doesn’t matter how good you are, there is an
infinite array of improvements that could be
made. The trouble is, those of us who manage
companies may not have thought about the
possibility of those improvements. Often, even
if we can recognise areas for improvement,
we don’t know how to make them. I have
noticed that in business original thought and
innovation come way down the list of priorities
in favour of fussing over and copying what the
competition are saying and doing for example.
So failing to solve the complex problems
involved with improving basic services often
has no shame associated with it. As long as you
say “value add” with the right kind of drawl, you
are a corporate star!
up space in our own buildings to store it. Most
importantly, when you ring up our distributors,
you should find what you need available next
day. Consignment stock was not originally our
idea, but we have worked tirelessly with our
distributors (I should say Distribution Partners
to attract nods of approval from those in the
know) to make it work really well for them.
I was called by a company recently from whom
I had ordered a kitchen sink on the internet.
They were ringing to tell me that it would not
be arriving that day, as promised, but would
take two or three weeks. When I asked why,
the person from Sink-U-Like (no such company
really exists, I hope!) told me that “It’s out of
stock at the distributor.”“But I thought you were
a distributor.” “We have just one apartment left
for yerself, Sir - it’s in Tomsk.” I admit that I made
up the last bit, but only because it was less
ridiculous than the real reply.
Here is a set of promises: Paxton Access will not
provide value add. We will instead continue
to turn our efforts to designing good, reliable
products, and getting them to you in a fit state
and on time. We will try to tell you about them
in as clear a way as we can. We won’t train your
dog for you. If you want help, we’re here. You
don’t have to read our instruction manuals
if you don’t want to, just call us and ask! A
friendly person will answer the phone without
you having to be screened by a robot.
Many years ago, the stock problem seemed an
impossible one to solve. If ever the issue was
discussed in meetings, people would suck their
teeth and try to talk about the weather instead.
But persistence and refusal to accept muddled
or half baked arrangements won through, and
distributors now happily run large amounts of
consignment stock.
Simple, really!
We run consignment stock with some of our
distributors, which means that we lend them
some of our own inventory. It ensures that they
have it to hand in sufficient quantities without
having to tie up a huge amount of money in
pre-bought products. We don’t have to use
