Y8 students have had the exciting opportunity to write postcards to a school in the South of France. The exchange started before Christmas and they have just received their first homemade replies. Above all they were encouraged that their level of French is suitably high to communicate effectively with native speakers. They will remain in good contact to improve reading and writing skills. Y11 Raising Achievement Evening A reminder to parents that the Raising Achievement Evening is on 10 February from 6.45 pm. This parents-only evening will give a greater understanding of how to help students revise and succeed at this important time. Amy Bowen Charlie Gray Year 12 Sam Fulford Isobel Southwood Year 13 Amber Minns George Shepherd “On se lave les mains” Y9 students have embarked on a different sort of creative writing challenge producing a poster advising young children to wash their hands well entitled “On se lave les mains”. The posters will be sent to an orphange in Madagascar to be distrubuted to schools in surrounding villages. Although Madagascar has not been directly affected with Ebola, they are hot on Sports Leaders Update Y8-10 Sports Leaders have shown their caring side by spending Tuesday afternoons with the residents of Ashlyns Care Home. They have chatted with the residents, who range in age from 75 – 103, sharing stories and playing board games from Monopoly to Jenga. Girls’ Football Programme the campaign with preventative methods. As a French speaking country, this is a great way for our students to think about the wider world and issues that affect others. Sixth Form Reminder “We walked in as acquaintances and came out as friends” (Molly Jeffries and Chloe Chamberlain Y8). Our Leaders worked overtime on Saturday to help at the annual Bridgewater School Cross Country event. Despite snowy conditions, our students worked hard to make sure the event ran smoothly, acting as marshals and “hares” to the Y3-6 competitors. Without their input, these events are not possible. Special thanks to Harry Sanders, Sophie Ambrose, Joel James, Daniel Stace, Skye Berryman (Y7), Emily Alderson (Y8), Ellen Northwood, Maddie Kiernan (Y9), Jake Alderson and Amber Davies (Y10). Ashlyns Trampoliners Bounce into District Squad Well done to the team who competed at the District Competition on Wednesday. All performed well against tough competition. Special congratulations to Callum Ginn and Penny Lee who made it to the District Squad and will compete on 18 March at the Herts School Games. Camelot Rugby Club Floodlit Rugby Tournament Our Y7, 8 & 9 boys’ rugby teams took part in a floodlit tournament in Hemel against 2 other schools within the District. Ashlyns were the only school to participate in all 3 age groups across all 3 days, finishing in 2nd place. We would like to thank Camelot Rugby club for hosting the event and to the parents for supporting our teams in freezing conditions! We have been lucky enough to secure a Watford FC Women’s football player to run after school coaching sessions specifically for girls at Ashlyns. The programme will run for 6-10 weeks from next Tuesday 27 January and is open to all female students (specifically age 14+). Flyer attached. Please return permission slips next week for the biometric registration which will be installed imminently. This is to reduce the queuing time for students.
