a letter
from the president
Dear Alums and Friends,
The son of educators, a student of the Christian Brothers, and inspired by 100 years of
history and tradition, I’m honored to write to you today as the fourth President of West
Catholic Preparatory High School! What has happened at this school over the past
four years has been nothing short of an incredible resurgence story and I’m ready to
lead us through the next phase of growth. I’m standing on the shoulders of a Giant in
succeeding Brother Richard Kestler, FSC and want to thank him for leaving our school poised
for greatness.
You should know that our Board of Directors, led by
Steve Tulli ’84, in collaboration with the Office of Catholic
Education, led a very professional search process and I thank
them for their leadership. Since assuming the role on July 1, 2016,
great things have been happening and we are building up to
what will promise to be a special year for our school. You will hear
more about my plans and vision for the future very soon, but in
this introductory letter I’d like to share with you what I hold most
important as your school leader.

Now in my fifth year at West Catholic, I have grown to appreciate
many things that are unique to our institution - our alums and the pride for their alma mater;
our teachers and their tireless commitment to Catholic education; our building and its
natural character. But, the thing that I have come to understand as most unique to West
Catholic is its ability to impact the lives of young people. West Catholic is not just a
classroom, or a person, or a team, or a building; West Catholic is a collective experience that
makes a deep impact on young people.
I hold my ability to impact young people as most important as your school leader. It is that
ability to impact which our patron Saint, John Baptist de La Salle, founded the Brothers of
the Christian Schools. Deeply moved by the human and spiritual distress “of the children of
artisans and of the poor”, and in response to the call of God, John Baptist de La Salle and
his first Brothers decided to make a lifelong commitment to him to provide these children
with a human and Christian education, and so extend the glory of God on Earth. What an
awesome power and serious responsibility we have as Catholic educators!
With the charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle, I invite you to join me in being courageous
in your support of our school. How else will our children overcome the magnitude of
problems facing society today; where else will our children learn and absorb the values of
our Catholic culture; from where else will our future leaders emerge?

MAKING HISTORY
West Catholic Preparatory High School Celebrates Historic $5 Million Gift
from Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mazur.
On April 29, 2016, WC celebrated its single largest donation to the school since its founding in 1916. It was truly a memorable day
as we celebrated with the Mazur Family, the Class of 1963, the Archbishop, and all West family and friends!
Mr. Mazur is the Vice Chairman and Co-Founder of Akrimax Pharmaceuticals, a cardiovascular pharmaceutical company he created
in 2008. In addition to his support as a benefactor, he serves WCP as a member of the Board of Trustees. He is also Chairman of
the Board of Trustees at Manor College in Jenkintown (Montgomery County) and is a member of the Board of Visitors for Temple
University’s College of Liberal Arts.
The generosity of the Mazur family will allow WC to advance its mission well into the future and ensure families in the West
Philadelphia, South West Philadelphia and surrounding communities continue to have access to a quality secondary Catholic
education.

WCP held its annual Career Day on March
18, 2016. Over 50 of our alumni returned
to the hallowed halls of West Catholic to
share career insights with fellow Burrs.
The day kicked off with a keynote
address by Joshua Short ’84, an
Independent Allstate Insurance Agent.
Joshua also was the title sponsor for
the event. “West Catholic”s Career Day

is such an important aspect of every
high school student’s life; this is an opportunity to see and hear from some
of West Catholic’s past come to speak
to West Catholic’s future,” said Short.
“I decided to sponsor Career Day so that
it would at least provide an opportunity to those that want to take part in it.
Being a sponsor at minimum, allows
me to assist with giving back to West
Catholic. One never knows what small
act can spark the next generation of
entrepreneurs.”
Students attended panel discussions
from a broad range of professional
backgrounds including arts, science,
education, business, criminal justice,
government, communication, entertainment, and entrepreneurship.
Seniors participated in interviewing
techniques, resume writing, dress for
success and life after West Catholic workshops.

as opposed to Harrisburg. Called OSTC
Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit,
the program provides scholarships
and financial aid for students who
live in underperforming public school
districts.
Over 95% of WCP students are from failing public school districts.
Therefore your state tax dollars can go directly towards taking young
men and women out of these failing schools and giving them a chance
to excel here at West Catholic Prep. The process is as simple as filling out
a one page form, and West Catholic can handle the rest of the process.
