With Pastor Ann Berney on vacation , Pastor Shirley filled in with a thought for today.
Everything in Moderation?
Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your judgments are like the great deep;
you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.
How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
--Psalm 36.5-9
Summer has at last arrived, and we’ve jumped from average daily temperatures in
the upper 50’s and lower 60’s, to highs in the low to mid 90’s. This seems a bit extreme.
In prayer I jokingly asked God, “Whatever happened to the idea of moderation?”
Later, I was thinking about this, and it occurred to me that in God’s relationship with
us God doesn’t do moderation very often. Remember that old regency period word: prodigious? God is prodigious. Prodigious means over the top. God is prodigious in love,
in forgiveness, in creativity, in accountability, in encouragement, in generosity, in availability. God is, over and over again, over the top in what God offers to us.
While it might be wise for us, for you and I, to practice moderation in many areas,
such as eating, spending, drinking, etc., perhaps we could also be prodigious when it
comes to our relationship with God. Let us throw moderation to the wind and be prodigious in the time we spend with God, confiding, listening, praising, yielding, giving. And
may God continue to be in-moderate in the grace God gives to us.

Say a prayer for…
Sherri Burbank-Williams’ mother who
suffered a heart attack and is failing
Dear Church Family,
Jill and I would like to thank you for your
prayers and concern for the sudden loss of my
nephew Nate. Nate was by eldest nephew and a special light in my life and the life of our family. We
know God has him and are thankful for the 33 years
he was with us. Please keep our family in your
prayers as we struggle with this loss. Nate left behind a wife, Laurie, and 15 month old son, Dane, as
well as a large extended family.
God Bless,
Dawn and Jill Harmon
Dear Church Family,
Thank you for prayers for my youngest
nephew, Michael, 12, who is going through a bone
marrow transplant. He is doing remarkably well. As
of last week he has 100% donor cells which means
the marrow has grafted. Praise the Lord! He is not
out of the woods yet, but has been released out of
the hospital to the Ronald McDonald house. He has
host VS graft where the body tries to reject the donor. While this is normal it is a concern so we’d appreciate continued prayers.
With much love and thanks,
Dawn and Jill Harmon

Summer People’s Choir
You are invited to sing in the choir loft on Sunday mornings. The People’s Choir meets Sundays at
8:15 am to practice just before the service.
Women’s Book Club
August 26 is the next Book Club meeting in the
Cottage at 7:00 pm. The feature book is The Alexandrea Link by Steve Berry.
If you’re ready for September’s
book, look for The Girl with the
Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson.
School is on the way!
You no doubt have seen the sale ads all over
and stores gearing up. Yes, we are talking about
school supplies and although summer has really just
begun around here it really is time
to begin collecting so we can distribute supplies to schools in need.
As our economy and employment
continues to be affected, so do the
needs of many families. The school
bus will be parked in the narthex through the month
of August. Please help us fill it up and support our
children. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to
the body. Remembering Jesus' words "It is more
blessed to give than to receive."
Food and Fundraising
October 5 will be our second annual Eat-goodfood-and-help-your-church event. Pick up the special flyer Sunday and take it with you October 5 to
Mama Stortini's Restaurant. Lots of us will be doing
this--so you will see many acquaintances and
friends there.
At the end of the day, the restaurant will total
up all of the tickets that have the special flyer attached, and send us a check for 20% of the total!
One flyer will be required for each ticket; so if you
have a bunch at your table and it is dutch, each of
you will need the flyer.
This is truly FUNdraising, and a good excuse to
join friends and family at the table for lunch or dinner. So mark your calendar and pick up the flyer.
Unique Boutique
Keep those needles flying and
brushes painting, bakers find those
favorite recipes. Our Unique Boutique sale will be here before you
know it and we’ll be ready. The
dates to know are November 7th and December 5th
when we will be featuring our handmade wares for
presents and gently used Christmas decorations for
decking your halls.
Peace Poles at Puyallup
United Methodist Church
This project has been “percolating” for three
years and we are finally ready to move ahead. We
would like your help.
What is it? A way to promote God’s love,
peace and understanding. Three wood poles would
be set near the church entrance in a simple garden
setting, accessible to all. These four-sided poles
would be inscribed with the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 16 different languages.
Here’s how you can help:
* Suggest the language you’d most
like included. The following have already been decided: English, Japanese, Spanish, Twulshootseed (native
language of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians), Tagalog, and Korean. Your
vote will help us determine the other
ten languages. Please submit it to the
church office or fill out the form in the
church bulletin no later than September 12, 2010.
* Contribute to the costs and labor of the project.
We have a great start to the finances with two recent
substantial memorial gifts. Contributions big and
small will help us complete this project and provide
for continued maintenance. You may also want to
contribute by volunteering to help install the project
or work on the landscaping. Contributions may be
indicated on the form in the church bulletin or by
contacting the church office or one of the names
listed below. Checks or cash designated for the
Peace Pole Project may be put in the Sunday offering.

NEW HOSPITALITY
OPPORTUNITY, Just for you!
T
he fellowship time after both services is a won-
derful opportunity to see friends, welcome guests,
make plans and share refreshments on Sunday
mornings. As a gift-giving society, food is often the
centerpiece of hospitality, a concrete
demonstration of caring. Giving the
gift of hospitality is something that
we can all share. It requires NO
meetings or evening commitments.
AND, we can do it as often as we
want.
Please share your gift of hospitality by signing
up to bring something to share at Fellowship. It
does not have to be elaborate and may include cookies, breads, fruit, nuts, cheese and crackers, etc.
You get the picture.
What do you need to do? Here are just the basics since those participating will get more details.
SIGN UP for the fellowship time at which you
wish to help. Perhaps you wish to do it at some special time to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. Full
details will be provided to those helping.
Ministry areas will have primary responsibility
for preparing beverages. You don’t need to make
coffee, though it is not difficult. Just help by providing the snacks, replenishing the food table and
straightening up/cleaning up after Fellowship.
Will you help?
