5 days from €479 21 – 25 May 2015 Eurovision Song Contest Tour - Vienna Day 1 – Malta – Vienna Day 2 - Vienna After breakfast visit the centre of Vienna where you can admire more of the Austrian capital’s landmarks which include the Kärtnerstrasse, the Hofburg, Michaelerplatz, the State Opera House and the Pestsäule which is located on the pedestrianised Graben. After the tour travel to Mariahilferstrasse, Vienna’s most important shopping street,(transfers not included) which lies in Mariahilf, the sixth municipal district of Vienna. Mariahilf is a heavily populated urban area with many residential buildings. It has a population of 30,000 within an area of 1.48 square kilometres. You are later driven to the suburb of Grinzing which lies in the northwest of Vienna, in the district of Döbling. There you will visit a Heuriger wine tavern extra in which wine-growers serve the most recent year’s wines as well as a limited selection of cold food generally made of local, homemade products. Day 3 – Vienna Breakfast and proceed for a full day visit of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods), the forested highlands that are bounded by the rivers Triesting, Gölsen, Traisen and Danube. The 45-kilometre long and 25-kilometre wide range of hills is heavily wooded and provides a popular recreation area for the Viennese. Visit the Roman city of Baden, famous for its thermal springs as you travel through the romantic valley Helenental to the former Mayerling hunting lodge. Today it is a commemorative chapel, however it was also the very place where the Crown Prince Rudolph, only son of Emperor Franz-Joseph, committed suicide with Baronesse Vetsera in 1889. In the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, you will visit the medieval cloister (extra) which houses the remains of the last Babenberger. Your tour continues with a leisurely boat ride in the Seegrotte (extra), the largest subterranean lake in Europe. You will leave the Vienna Woods and return to Vienna, passing the Liechtenstein Castle on the way. On your return in Vienna, we have some free time before being driven to the Wiener Stadthalle to assist at the final night of the Eurovision Song Contest. Day 4 - Bratislavia This morning, following breakfast, you leave Vienna on your way to Bratislava, the capital city of the nearby Slovak Republic. Bratislava is the country’s largest city, and occupies both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries. Once in Bratislava, you can stroll in the city’s historic centre which is characterised by many baroque palaces which include the Grassalkovich Palace, now serving as the residence of the Slovak president, and the Archiepiscopal Palace which now serves as the seat of the Slovak government. In the centre one also finds St. Martin’s Cathedral, which served as the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830, as also the Franciscan Church which is the oldest preserved sacral building in the city.
