Tour - Vienna
Day 1 – Malta – Vienna
Day 2 - Vienna
After breakfast visit the centre of
Vienna where you can admire more of
the Austrian capital’s landmarks which
include the Kärtnerstrasse, the Hofburg,
Michaelerplatz, the State Opera House
and the Pestsäule which is located
on the pedestrianised Graben. After
the tour travel to Mariahilferstrasse,
Vienna’s most important shopping
street,(transfers not included) which lies
in Mariahilf, the sixth municipal district of
Vienna. Mariahilf is a heavily populated
urban area with many residential
buildings. It has a population of 30,000
within an area of 1.48 square kilometres.
You are later driven to the suburb of
Grinzing which lies in the northwest of
Vienna, in the district of Döbling. There
you will visit a Heuriger wine tavern
extra in which wine-growers serve the
most recent year’s wines as well as a
limited selection of cold food generally
made of local, homemade products.
Day 3 – Vienna
Breakfast and proceed for a full day visit
of the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods), the
forested highlands that are bounded
by the rivers Triesting, Gölsen, Traisen
and Danube. The 45-kilometre long
and 25-kilometre wide range of hills is
heavily wooded and provides a popular
recreation area for the Viennese. Visit
the Roman city of Baden, famous for its
thermal springs as you travel through
the romantic valley Helenental to the
former Mayerling hunting lodge. Today
it is a commemorative chapel, however
it was also the very place where the
Crown Prince Rudolph, only son of
Emperor
Franz-Joseph,
committed
suicide with Baronesse Vetsera in 1889.
In the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz,
you will visit the medieval cloister (extra)
which houses the remains of the last
Babenberger. Your tour continues with
a leisurely boat ride in the Seegrotte
(extra), the largest subterranean lake
in Europe. You will leave the Vienna
Woods and return to Vienna, passing
the Liechtenstein Castle on the way. On
your return in Vienna, we have some free
time before being driven to the Wiener
Stadthalle to assist at the final night of
the Eurovision Song Contest.
Day 4 - Bratislavia
This morning, following breakfast, you
leave Vienna on your way to Bratislava,
the capital city of the nearby Slovak
Republic. Bratislava is the country’s
largest city, and occupies both banks
of the River Danube and the left bank
of the River Morava. Bordering Austria
and Hungary, it is the only national
capital that borders two independent
countries. Once in Bratislava, you can
stroll in the city’s historic centre which is
characterised by many baroque palaces
which include the Grassalkovich Palace,
now serving as the residence of the
Slovak president, and the Archiepiscopal
Palace which now serves as the seat of
the Slovak government. In the centre
one also finds St. Martin’s Cathedral,
which served as the coronation church
of the Kingdom of Hungary between
1563 and 1830, as also the Franciscan
Church which is the oldest preserved
sacral building in the city.
