Grade 4 Newsletter
Tuxedo Park School: Making A Difference- Compassion:
a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune,
accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering
Science
In science the students continue to study water. Last week, we studied and experimented
with hot and cold water, saltwater, brackish water, and freshwater. We discussed how
they interact physically. This week, we began a study of oceanography, discussing the
earth’s rotation, the coriolis effect, ocean gyres (large ocean current patterns), and
weather.
Social Studies
This week, the students completed a family lineage project. The students interviewed
their parents about their family origins and found out interesting facts about their family.
Each student typed a brief paragraph about their family lineage including the information
from their interview.
In social studies, our continent studies begin with North America. The students
completed notes and a variety of worksheets pertaining to North America and the United
States. Next week, we will discuss Canada and Central America.
Math
We continue to work on multiplying whole numbers and decimals. We discussed the
importance of knowing their math facts. The students are encouraged to really focus on
their math fact recall to help with the next three chapters in math. We discussed using
flashcards and an app called Flash to Pass to help increase their speed and accuracy of
their math facts. Next week, we will be reviewing and discussing different algebra
concepts.
ELA
The students completed their first personal narrative this week. We continue to discuss
the importance of an attention grabbing introduction, time order, details, and a complete
closing. Next week, we will complete a variety of writing workshop activities to practice
these areas before starting their second personal narrative. The students also reviewed
compound sentences and practiced writing complex sentences this week. As a class, we
discussed how using sentence variety helps keep the reader interested and helps create a
story that is easy to follow and understand.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. TPS will don pink on Monday,
October 24th, to help honor cancer
survivors and raise awareness about the
steps we can take to reduce the risk of
breast cancer. One of the best weapons in
the fight against the disease is early
detection. Pink serves as a reminder of
this. On October 24th, TPS students are
encouraged to replace one of their regular
uniform items with something pink. Each
pink sweater, shirt, tie, headband, skirt, or
sock sends a message – a message that we
care, a message of support, a message of
the power of young people to be agents of
change. This small gesture can have a
profound impact. Please join us on
October 24th…all it takes is a little pink.
