Welcome to Bishop Burton College
On behalf of the College, I would like to offer you a very warm
welcome into accommodation. Your accommodation is a very
important part of your degree experience and we aim to provide
comfortable, safe accommodation and promote a spirit of
community in which people can learn, work and live freely without
fear of discrimination, prejudice or harassment.
This booklet has been produced to provide you with a guide to
living in halls of residence. Please read it carefully as it contains
information needed whilst you are a resident on campus.
While living on campus you become part of a community where
respect for yourself, others and your surroundings is central to all
we do.
If you wish to discuss the contents of this guide, please do not
hesitate to contact myself or any member of the warden team.
I hope you have a happy, safe and enjoyable stay in halls and wish
you every success with your studies.
Jeanette Dawson OBE
Chief Executive and Principal

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Activities
Freshers’ Week will get you started and then let us know what you
want to do as well as those thing we do anyway – come with us to
Meadowhall, the seaside, York etc. at the weekend. Join the Gym,
take part in competitions, you may also want to work in the
catering unit, or within other areas of the College.
Attending Lectures
It’s probably a good idea to go to lectures given you’re paying a lot
for your degree. Your tutor will discuss your timetable when you
see them in week one. If you are ill let us know - don’t sit in your
room alone.
Bedding
Bring some with you as we don’t provide it.
Boots
This is something unique to our type of institutions where we have
lots of students in and out of muddy areas each day.
Do not come in to the buildings with your dirty footwear - we don’t
want to waste money cleaning and replacing carpets all the time
and we don’t need to if we have this rule understood and applied
7
by everyone (including staff) You will be asked to take them off if
you forget.
Catering
Lots of lovely things to eat in Ostlers – our Bronkies are very
popular. If you have a dietary need let us know and we can agree
what will work for you. Eating outlets are open at times convenient
to students and range from Smart coffee and paninis to the more
traditional type of meals.
Cars
Park in the large car park one - display your pass and get access
through the barrier with your student card – you will need to fill in a
form at enrolment to get this sorted. Don’t drive too fast, park in
the wrong place or think it is a god idea to put people on your
bonnet.
Cleaning
Cleaning equipment is provided in each hall for your room and
communal areas are cleaned by our staff. If you leave a heap of
pizza boxes it makes things tricky so clear up as you go please.
Council Tax
You are exempt and we will tell the important people that this is so
– you do need to enrol though.
8
Damage
Sometimes things get broken or damaged - tell us. We do operate a
system whereby a communal charge for damages is imposed on the
whole hostel if someone does not take responsibility for the
damage.
Discipline
If people don’t behave in an acceptable way there is a consequence
– this is a rare occurrence. The process is described within the
College charter. Living within a communal situation can take some
getting used to and Higher Education students usually manage
themselves effectively with little intervention from staff.
Emergencies
Fire-the alarms are noisy and if you hear the alarm sound then get
out of the building. We discuss what we need you to do at
induction. If you have a hearing impairment make sure you get a
vibrating pillow arranged for you. We do evacuation tests every
term. Very occasionally students decide they can’t be bothered to
get out of the building or do so slowly. This is not appropriate and
there is a consequence.
Illnesses
If you are ill let us know. We have a bus taking students to the
Beverley Health Centre for appointments three times a week- this
works really well but you will need to register as one of their
9
patients. If you have something contagious we may agree to get
you out of halls and back home until things are clear.
If you have an accident or an illness needing emergency support
then get the warden to call the ambulance. The site is huge and
there can be more than one emergency vehicle accessing it at onceif you call an ambulance without letting us know it gets tricky and
we may not direct the ambulance appropriately and quickly.
If you have any chronic conditions make sure we have an agreed
risk assessment written up with you so we know what to do if you
are not well.
On-site Facilities
You’ve got a washing machine and dryer close by, a free to use cash
machine is in the Meadows foyer, you can join the gym (it costs £20
a month and you can walk to it because it is just by the residential
area), and all floors also have access to an ironing board in your
kitchen.
Feedback/Forums
You will need to feedback to us every term – it helps us both to
agree what is and isn’t working. It only takes 10 minutes to do this
and we do get pizzas for the floor that provides the highest number
of returns.
Obviously there are lots of informal methods to communicate with
us - face to face or by phone, or email us on
[email protected]
10
Health
Make sure we know about any health needs, we don’t look after
medication but we can assist in lots of ways – meet up with the
Health and Welfare Officer at enrolment or ask a warden to set up a
meeting with her.
Holidays - Clearing Rooms
We need to deep clean your room, check for damages and get the
block sorted while you’re away. So the whole room (including walls)
needs to be cleared for Christmas and Easter please.
Insurance
We do not insure your items so you will need to do so separately.
Issues and Complaints
Let us know as soon as possible – the complaints process is
identified within the student handbook.
Also let us know if it is not resolved and then we can clarify what
the options are from then on.
Keys
Don’t give your key to anyone else, try not to lose your key and try
really hard to remember to lock your room. We charge you if we
need to get a lock changed - £100.
11
Local Area
Hull is the city of Culture in 2017 so there will be lots to do
throughout the year. Hull also has a big University so plenty of night
life if that is your thing.
Money
Make sure you follow up with money issues – we sometimes need
to see you to discuss non-payment of bills and there are sometimes
methods to support you with loans or grants within the College –
Student services will help, ignoring things will not help.
PAT Testing
A company will come in within the first two weeks to PAT
everything in your room, if you acquire anything through the year
the wardens can get it PAT tested for you. Let them know.
Pets
Sorry Freddie (whatever he is) needs to stay at home even if he is
very cute, small and won’t be any trouble…
12
Post
Don’t forget your student ID card when you go to the post room
which is in the main building to collect your post, the address is:
Bishop Burton College
York Road
Beverley
East Yorkshire
HU17 8QG
Settling In
Have a go at joining in –you will find someone to talk to and they
don’t have to be your best friend for ever… Freshers’ Week has
something for everyone and we have such good feedback on it from
people feeling just like you might be.
Security/Safety/Locking Up
We have barriers across the site to ensure there are pedestrianised
areas and have 24 hour security on site.
We lock the site at midnight so if you want to get in after then you
can walk in but a vehicle can’t get in so it will need to park
elsewhere. If we have a social event the lock up time changes –
please speak to the warden team for more information on this.
The students have stated that they feel this is the best way to keep
things safe. Your hall front door should be locked at all times.
13
Smoking
Not in your hall, not in your room – if you touch the smoke detector
it registers centrally so don’t even think of trying to cover it.
There are a range of smoking shelters across the site - you’ll see
them at induction.
Student Association
You will hear all about the Student Association during Induction – it
is a commitment on your time but it is worth it - you will learn a lot
about making things happen and will be involved with shaping the
College.
Study Facilities
You can get to a computer 24 hours a day so you are going to have
to dream up another excuse for that work being late. You’ll need
your id card to access the HE area.
TV Licence
You’ll need one if you have a TV - the College‘s licence does not
cover individual sets. You can buy them at the local post office or
via the TV Licensing website.
14
Visitors
Not a problem - overnight guests are charged for welcome any
time. Find the warden and let them know who is staying. If there is
a fire we will only be looking for one person per room unless we
know otherwise.
Be careful of who you bring in because if they cause damage you
will get the bill for it, sometimes people invite themselves , the
wardens are pretty good at moving people on if they need to.
You probably are not keen on finding a complete stranger asleep in
the hostel kitchen and nor is the cleaner.
WiFi
It works across most of the site, so again no excuse for that work
not being done. However, if you experience any issues, let us know.
