Shrek The Musical
ACTING AUDITION MATERIAL

!
Develop a physical, vocal and emotional style for each character.!
!
Really think about the characters, take a risk – have fun with something new!...maybe do a
little research on the show, too :) Fiona (Girl) (stepping, aka interrupting her way, into the story): Oh hello! Sorry I’m late!
Welcome to Fiona, the musical! Yay, let’s talk about me! “Once upon a time, there
was a little princess named Fiona, who lived in a kingdom Far Far Away. One fateful
day, her parents told her that it was time for her to be locked away in a desolate
tower, guarded by a fire-breathing dragon – as so many princesses had for hundreds
of years before.”... Isn’t that the saddest thing you’ve ever heard? A poor little
princess hidden away from the world, high in a tower, awaiting her one true love.
Pinocchio (Boy or Girl) (having just been ‘dumped in the swamp): This place is a
dump! (reading a sign that says...) “All fairytale creatures have been banished from
the kingdom of Duloc. All fairytale freaks will be sent to a resettlement facility.” But,
I’m not a puppet, I’m a real kid (oops, his/her nose grows). ... Dumped on a swamp!
Man, I tell ya, being a fairytale character really stinks!
Donkey (Boy or Girl), (speaking to his/her ‘new friend’ Shrek, who just saved the day):
Can I just say? That was incredible. Man, they were trippin’ over themselves to get
away from you. I liked that. (Shrek keeps trying to walk away, but Donkey keeps
pestering him) Say, you lost or something?... Oh, Duloc! I know Duloc! You gotta let
me show you the way, because I am like a GPS with fur! (Shrek says he’s rather be on
his own)... But nobody’s fine on their own! Not when you look like we do! Hey, didn’t
you hear what they said? We gotta join forces! Otherwise, they’re gonna lock me up!
And I can not go back in a cage! I don’t know if I mentioned it or not, but I did six
years in solitary for impersonating a piñata.
Farquaad (Boy), (speaking to Gingy, the gingerbread man): ha ha heh heh
heh...”Run, run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me – I’m the gingerbread
man!”... You are a monster.. you and the rest of that fairytale trash poisoning my
perfect kingdom. And, it will be even more perfect just as soon as I find a princess to
marry. And I hear you know of one. Tell me where she is!
Donkey (Boy or Girl), (explaining ‘punch-buggy’ to Shrek): The rules are very simple,
whoever spots a horse and cart along the road – Punch buggy! Fun, right?! Haven’t
you ever been on a road trip? Man, you need to get out more, because – Punch
buggy! I gotcha with that wagon full of hay over there. See, that’s another reason
you need me around. Who else is gonna fill you in on all the fun stuff you missed out
Donkey (Boy), (ala Barry White): Shrek, I know you can’t hear me right now. But if you
could, I’d want to say a few things to you. I am in your corner, buddy. But you have
got to tell this girl what you’re really feeling deep down. You may not get another
chance. So just go on now. Just open your heart and.. here we go, that’s right baby,
you can tell her!
Shrek (Boy): For your information, there’s a lot more to ogres than people think... an
example you, say?... ummm, okay... Ogres are like onions. And, not only because
they stink and they make you cry, but because they have layers. Onions have layers.
Ogres have layers. Onions have layers – you get it? We both have layers. Are you
listening?…
Farquaad (Boy), (doing reps at the gym at perfecting how he’ll speak to the princess):
494, 495, 496. Princess Fiona? I am Lord Farquaad. What do you think? No, You’re
right, too formal. 600! Fiona? Hi, Farquaad, but you can call me Maximus, as I’ve no
doubt you will. Woof! But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is Fiona
and Farquaad is the sun.
Fairytale Character (Boy or Girl)- You Decide the Fairytale Character: Big Bad Wolf,
Three Little Pigs, White Rabbit, Fairy Godmother, Peter Pan, Wicked Witch, Sugar Plum
Fairy, Ugly Duckling, Three Bears, Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty, or Elf: What are we
doing in your swamp? Well gosh, we were forced to come here. Lord Farquaad, he
hoofed and he poofed and he signed an eviction notice. Maybe you could try
talking to him. He’d listen to you! You’re big and scary! Um, go back? We can’t go
back. Farquaad will turn us into bratwurst. The guy’s bad news. Look here Ogre, I’m
gonna spell it out for ya. We don’t want us here any more than you do. But you’re
the only one tough enough to stand up to that no-good flim flammer Farquaad.
Gingy: (Boy or Girl) Ohhh gosh. Uh oh, what’s happening now? Ohhh this is scary.
Ohhh, geez. Ohhh nooo! Oh, it’s you. (With disgust) Look what you’ve done to my
legs! You’re a monster! You say that the fairytale characters have poisoned your
kingdom? It’s not a kingdom because you’re not a king! You want me to tell you
where you can find a princess to marry? Bite me! Okay, well, maybe I have heard tell
of a princess. From who? From the Muffin man. Do you know the muffin man? Who
lives on Drury lane? Can I go now? No! Not the buttons! Not my gumdrop buttons!
