Section 1
Comprehension
(20 Marks)
Read the following passage carefully then answer each of the questions.
In some parts of the world, the ground may suddenly begin to shake or
crack without any warning. This happens when rocks under the land or in
the ocean begin to move. The shaking may last for a minute or more; it may
also last only a few seconds but can cause a great deal of damage. This is
called an earthquake. A strong earthquake may shake buildings and bridges
until they collapse. People are sometimes buried under the rubble.
Although the earth seems firm, it is not. Below the surface is so hot that
some rocks melt. The hard crust on the outside of the earth is the ground on
which we live, but it is cracked in several places. The cracks are called
faults. Some faults run across the land. Rocks may suddenly slip along a
fault and cause an earthquake.
The strongest earthquakes happen in earthquake zones. These are the
places where huge pieces of the earth’s cracked crust are moving. The
pieces of crust are called plates. They fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, but
are shifted around by the movements of hot liquid rock inside the earth. The
edges of most of the moving plates are hidden under the ocean, but some of
them are on land. When the plates under the ocean move, the seafloor
shakes, and this causes an earthquake under the ocean.
There are approximately 500 000 earthquakes every year. Most of them
are so weak that people do not feel them. Many occur under the ocean far
from land. In China, scientists have noticed that animals often behave
strangely before an earthquake. Chickens and horses run around because
they are frightened. Pandas moan, and snakes come out of the ground.
