Karen Stade
Karen is a researcher and writer of Nelson history. She left Nayland College at the end of her
seventh form year in 1982, the recipient of the Girls’ Citizenship Award. Her time as Circuit editor
that year directly led her into a journalism career.
After working in the Nelson Evening Mail and Radio Nelson newsrooms for nearly 10 years,
followed by five years tutoring broadcast journalism at Nelson Polytechnic, Karen decided to focus
on her true passion – history.
The most recent of her five school histories, Nayland College’s 50th Jubilee history, was launched
in March this year. Her other books cover topics as diverse as New Zealand’s first naturalised
Chinese immigrant, Appo Hocton, the city’s Church Steps, and the region’s Italian community.
Karen also writes stories for the Top of the South history website, The Prow, and writes and
curates exhibitions for the Nelson Provincial Museum. She is currently working on its World War
I centennial exhibitions.
Karen is the president of the Nelson Historical Society, the president elect of the Rotary Club of
Whakatu and, in her spare time, a keen genealogist.
