These tips can be practiced at home in the bathtub or elsewhere with your help. 1. Kicking —Child lays on bed with legs off the side. Children 4 years and older Concentrates on keeping legs straight. Emphasize kick from hip and pointing the toes. Wash face— Guppy Use to encourage the child to get his/ her face wet. Take a shower — Parent gently Otter pours water over child’s head Blow bubbles —Parents may Stingray Private Lesson/avail. For any level La Grande Swim Club wish to have child first blow on finger and say “blow the candle out”, then try blowing in the water. Or, blow bubbles in hand and then in the water. Pointed toes —Have the child point their toes at objects while sitting, then try kicking with the entire leg again moving at the hip not bending the knees. Holding breath —Practice out of water or with parent’s help in bathtub. Counting to 5 while they hold their breath. Classes When should children repeat a class? Children with more than a 3-month break from swimming lessons should repeat the previous level as a refresher course. Several sessions of one swim level is not uncommon. There are a number of reasons why: Size, Strength, age, and learning curve. Refunds The refund policy is such that participants must cancel within 3 business days prior to first day of lessons for a full refund or credit. If the pool has to cancel a class the class will be scheduled at a later date. Credits or refunds are not available for participant absences. Arm strokes —Have child make “big arm circles” while they walk making sure the arms are moving in the right direction Arms with side breathing —Child sits in parent’s lap keeping head down as if they were in the water. They pretend to take a breath to one side, blow bubbles down while their arms make big circles. Contact Aquatics Superintendent for any questions or concerns that you may have. 2. De-emphasize passing or failing a class. No child fails a swim class; they all improve. Several session at one swim level is not uncommon. 3. Bring your child to open recreational swim to work on the skills being taught. 4. Please have your child use the restroom prior to swim lessons and shower before class. No gum, band-aid’s or jewelry. 5. Bring a large towel and warm clothes for your child after the lesson. 6. Secure your child’s hair from their face prior to lessons. 7. Allow only light meals prior to lessons. 8. If you notice your child crying or not paying attention to the instructor, it may be best to withdraw from the child’s view or not watch every lesson. 9. Be positive at home concerning swimming. They will be looking for your positive attitude and encouragement. 10. Please do not try to talk to your child while they are doing their lesson, this is a distraction to the class and the instructor. 11. Remain in bleacher area—so not to block lifeguards view of the patrons in the pools. 12. Do not register for the next session of lessons until you know what level your child should go into next. 13. Children need to wait on bleachers for their instructor to call them over and need to exit pool immediately after class. Not potty trained If your child in not potty—trained, a swim diaper and plastic pants are required. Swim diapers are available for sale at the front counter. January 1st, 2015 we will be launching a new web site and soon you will be able to register on line for swim lessons and recreation programs!
