NAME: _______________________ DATE: ____________ BLOCK: _____ Background Information: A pathogen is something that causes disease. Pathogens can be bacterial, viral, protist, or fungus. You will research one bacterial or viral pathogen and produce a "Wanted Poster." Student Requirements: You will select a pathogen (virus or bacteria) from the approved list. You may research a pathogen not listed only if it is approved by your teacher. You will then produce a wanted poster with the given elements. Project Description/Abstract: The Wanted Poster is to be on white, 8.5" x 11" paper. Your wanted poster must include the information/sections described in the rubric. The rubric also shows the point value for each section. Procedure: You will have approximately two blocks to research your chosen disease and make your poster. Anything not finished in that time, must be completed outside of class. Evaluation: Students are graded by the specific criteria (see rubric). Students must list the sources they used to find information for this project. Students must use a minimum of 2 sources of information. HINTS: Use PowerPoint or word and create one slide or page for your poster. Your teacher can show you how to make it print like a single, portrait page. Your poster should differentiate between the pathogen and the disease that is caused by it. For example, the wanted poster would be for the Rhinovirus…not the common cold. As an example, a poster may be titled: Wanted: Rhinovirus Causes the common cold 1 Pathogen Wanted Poster Rubric Possible Points CRITERIA Two Mug shot photos (electron micrograph or microscopic picture or picture of person with symptoms) 2 Type of microbe (virus or bacteria) and disease caused by it 2 Microbe’s “m.o” (How the organism attacks and spreads) Most common victims to prey upon 4 3 Hide out of the culprit (where it is most likely to be found – either a specific body part or area of the world) Most common injury done to victim (symptoms) 3 4 Is it considered armed and dangerous? (degree of damage caused) Number of victims (annual rate) 3 3 Most effective weapons against the pathogen (treatments) 4 Five interesting facts not already included in above information Spelling/grammar/neatness/no plagiarism Creativity Use of class time Must have minimum of 2 sources. TOTAL POINTS 5 5 5 5 2 50 YOUR CHOICE OF PATHOGEN:_______________ DUE DATE:_______________________________ 2 1. What type of pathogen (bacteria or virus) causes the disease? 2. How does the pathogen attack people? 3. How does the pathogen spread from individual to individual? 4. Who does the disease affect most commonly? For example, some diseases affect mostly children. 5. In what part of the world or what part of the human body does the pathogen live? 6. What are the symptoms of the disease? List at least 4. 7. How severe is the disease? For example, is it deadly or just annoying? 8. How many people are infected by this disease each year? You can answer using world or USA statistics. 9. What medicines are used to treat/cure/prevent the disease? 10. List 5 additional facts that you have not already discussed in your above answers. 3 MICROBE/PATHOGEN LIST Pathogen Rhinovirus Influenza virus Polio virus Variola Rubella Varicella Ebola virus Hepatitis B Virus I Herpes simplex virus Varicella zoster Corona Virus HIV(human immunodeficiency virus) Syphilus Coxsackievirus A16 Bacillus anthracis Bordetella pertussis Clostridium botulinum Clostridium tetani Mycobacterium leprae Mycobacterium tuberculosis Neisseria gonorrhoeae Neisseria meningitidis Salmonella typhi Salmonella typhimurium Shigella dysenteriae Streptococcus pneumoniae Streptococcus (group A) Vibrio cholerae Streptococcus pyogenes Borrelia burgdorferi Peptic ulcers Bubonic plague 4 Disease Common cold Influenza Poliomyelitis Small pox German Measles Chicken pox Ebola Hepatitis B Cold Sores Shingles SARS AIDS Treponema pallidum Hand, foot, and mouth disease Anthrax Whooping cough Botulism Tetanus Leprosy (Hansen's disease) Tuberculosis Gonorrhea Spinal meningitis Typhoid fever Food poisoning Dysentery Pneumonia Scarlet fever Cholera Impetigo Lyme disease Helicobacter pylori Yersinia pestis
