In Memory Of
Shirley Syverson
September 9, 1936 - June 23, 2016
Shirley was born September 9, 1936 in Williston, ND to Gustav and
Anna (Dreier) Hiepler. She was raised on the farmstead north of
Epping, graduated from Epping High School in 1954, and attended
Minot State College for business. Shirley married her high school
sweetheart, Duane Syverson 57 years ago on May 23, 1959 at Epping
Lutheran Church (39 years later their grandson, Zimmy, was born on
their wedding anniversary.)
Shirley and Duane made their first home in Zahl, ND where they
lived for eighteen years. Duane taught the students and Shirley fed
them as the school cook. She was passionate about cooking and loved
finding new recipes. Later, she managed the Zahl grocery store. In
1978, Duane and Shirley moved back to their hometown of Epping
and opened the Buffalo Inn Cafe. Shirley was known for her
macaroni salad and served patrons at the cafe right up to the day she
died. They catered weddings, auctions sales, reunions (including
Alamo reunion for 650 people), Alamo/Ray/Epping Senior Citizens,
and Sitting Bull Auction every Monday for 15 years.
Shirley was an avid gardener, canner (she shared her love of canning
with Deb), and loved to embroider. Spending time with friends was
spent celebrating with her Birthday Club gals, playing whist during
neighborhood card parties, or playing a game or three of pinochle at
the cafe after the lunch hour crowd left. Shirley loved to drive and
even taught a friend to drive too. She enjoyed watching sports,
picnics/boating at the river, laughing with her friends, family, and
most importantly, her grandson Zimmy. Some of Shirley's proudest
moments were watching her children and grandson participate in high
school and college sports. Shirley wasn't a sportsman, but appreciated
the sport of hunting. You could see the pride she took in Jeff, Heather,
& Zimmy's passion by the mounts hanging on the walls of the cafe.
Zimmy even taught her to pull up a picture on her cell phone to be
able to see his latest trophy.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Duane, Epping, ND; daughter
Deb, her husband, Chris and grandson, Zimmy, Wellington, CO; son
Jeff, his wife, Heather, Epping, ND; brother Pastor Orville Hiepler,
Camarillo, CA; sister, Marion Bugge, Lacie, WA; numerous nieces
and nephews.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents and sisters, Gertrude
Bjella, Ruth Homuth, and Hildegarde Penfield.
