SANNE BJERG was born in 1965
and is a Danish librettist, director
and novelist. She studied at the
Danish Academy for Creative
Writing, and has been the director
of PLEX Music Theatre. Her debut
novel, Papaya-passionen (The
Passion of the Papaya), was
published in 1987 and she has
written over over 10 plays, operas
and interactive performances,
including Den Sidste virtuos (The
Last Virtuoso) in 1991 and IKONTM
in 2003.

the dust in the corners, the unpolished windows, my well-worn
trousers, my greasy hair, the uneven shave, the dirt under the
fingernails – all the clear signs that economic success had never
been a close acquaintance. But none of it seemed to matter to
Leonid. He saw the dedicated, experienced, local agent who
knew every corner of the industry. Someone who wasn’t in it for
the money. For him, the stacks of paper on my table indicated
professionalism and a thriving business. And the piles of loose
parts for the models I built for my clients he saw as a sign of a
busy schedule and important priorities. In short, he saw what he
wanted to see. And he saw what I wanted to be.

WHAT DREW YOU TO WRITE A BOOK SET IN
BARCELONA?
First of all it was my emerging
interest in football, having seen
my son and ex-husband looking
at old footballs along with scores
of men from all over the world in
the museum of FCBarcelona. And
because (at the time) I was very
interested in globalisation and the
conflict of being rootless. It became
very clear to me the way football
created a connection and sense
of community there in Barcelona,
across nations and cultures.
OTHER THAN FOOTBALL, OPERA AND
VOLCANOES, WHAT ELSE DO YOU THINK
INFLUENCED YOUR BOOK?
Well, I see the main character as
a kind of a mix of Don Quixote and
Kafka, the character sometimes
being called Don K, or just K,
because that is the type he is,
someone who on the one hand
tumbles around in this world with a
skewed sense of reality, and on the
other he’s from Prague and totally
paranoid that he’s being followed.
I’m a big fan of John Kennedy
’
Toole’s Confederacy of Dunces.
Ignatius J. Reilly is a character full
of hopelessness who also lacks an
awareness of his hopelessness.
The way in which he sees the world
inspired me.
THE BOOK OF MISTAKES IS ACTUALLY THE TITLE
OF VACLAV’S BOOK WITHIN THE BOOK. HOW DOES
YOUR MAIN CHARACTER FINISH HIS STORY?
Well, the story starts out with him
trying to remember how he ever
ended up stuck in an airport in
Prague, missing out on the climax
of his own best laid plans, as the
ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull
brings air traffic to a standstill. The
situation gets him thinking, and he
ends up taking about 400 pages
to try to understand the kinds of
mistakes that led him to this point,
but what happens in the last 100
pages is that in reality, meeting
the young footballer and shaping
the kidnapping plans have led him
into so many new situations and
closer to other people, so that he’s
drawn out of his introspective self
and starts to let go of his fears. It is
the story of a lonely man becoming
part of a community.

committee said: “Pryds Helle’s novel

is outstanding, but the committee
also wants to emphasize that the
Golden Laurels is being awarded to
her for her body of literary work as a
whole.” Previous recipients include
Leif Davidsen, Jussi Adler-Olsen and
Helle Helle.

Set in mid-twentieth century
Denmark, Folkets skønhed (Human
Beauty) is a sweeping family saga
seen from the perspective of a young
girl called Marie. Marie grows up in
rural poverty on the small island of
Langeland. Her childhood is marred
by violence and incest, her youth
interrupted by WWII. Despite the
hardship of her surroundings, Marie
is a sensitive girl with a hunger for
beauty, and when her father buys a
painting that turns out to be by van
Gogh, it opens a window for her into
a better world.
Born in 1965, MERETE PRYDS
HELLE had her debut in 1990 as
a novelist with Imod en anden ro
(Towards Another Calm). She has
received several literary awards,
including the Copenhagen County
Cultural Award in 1997 and, in
2009, the Francophone Countries

The Debut Prize kicks off the
Copenhagen Book Fair, BogForum,
each year in November, with the
winner receiving 50,000 Danish
kroner. This year, the jury, made
up of representatives from across
publishing industry, selected
Techno (Techno) by Niels Henning
Falk Jensby out of the 44 writers
nominated for the top prize. “This
is not a cosy read,” says Mona
Madsen, the Director of the prize
committee, “It’s crude, dirty, and
disgusting, but done with such
conviction.”
The young narrator, joined by an
older man, describes his nights out
on the town, with description after
description of bodily fluids, sex and
drugs, that stream through his body
like the constant beat of techno in
the background. It’s a novel about
uncontrollable desire between two
men, but it’s also a glimpse into the
places where gay men can freely
express their sexuality.
Techno is an uncompromising
coming-of-age story, about trying
to feel at home in one’s own body,
while growing up and deciding what
that body can be put through and
will endure: where it’s boundaries
are, and where those boundaries
become abstract through pleasure
or pain.

life and the traditional countryside.

father they seldom see, the brothers

by the wild idea of spontaneously
walking on foot to their mother’s
home town Tellerup, in
the north of the island.
The trip becomes a
journey through an old,
but rapidly changing,
agricultural landscape,
and the unearthing of a
family history of upheaval
and loss. Their ramble
lays bare dilapidated
villages, mysterious skunk
laboratories, overgrown
farms, and the last traces
of an old culture as new
types of landscapes
take root. But what can
possibly grow out of the
ruins of a family?
In the space of the few
days the trip takes, the
brothers lose their way,
but also find a connection
in their experience of
nature, reflecting on their family, and
their shared memories as brothers.

Literature at the University of

Abelone, a young woman from
a poor homestead in the north
of Denmark, falls victim to ‘the
lord’s right’ on her wedding night.
Pregnant and desperate to avoid
further unwanted advances, she
flees, eventually finding work at
the house of the Bangsbo manor in
Frederikshavn, near Skagen. The
landlord, an unusually liberated man
for his day, opens his house up to a
wide variety of contemporary Danish
artists, including writers Herman
Bang (author of Tine (Tina), 1889) and
Holger Drachmann (poet laureate).
At Bangsbo anything goes and the
powerful surge of the world knocks
at the door, in the form of affairs,
intrigues, duels, suicides and ghosts.
Abelone thrives in the middle of it
all, particularly in the company of
Herman Bang, whom she worships
and lures into a special kind of
romance. The novel is based on real
events and the surviving memories of
the author’s great-grandmother.
BENT HALLER was born in
1946 and is one of Denmark’s
most prolific and well-loved
authors, having written over 50
books, including novels and books
for children and young adults, several
of which have been made into films.

The Supreme Being (Det højeste væsen)
is the story about the love between
the narrator, an ordinary man, and
an enigmatic beauty, a being from
another world, a place that turns
out to be the Romania of dictator
Ceausescu.
A girls life’s gradually takes shape;
a ballet dancer in Ceausescu’s
Romania who makes a break for it
while on tour in Italy. As political
refugee, she begins a new life and a
love affair to our narrator, a Danish
man, yet the other world remains
with her, like a shadow. Parallel to
her story, is the story of Nicolae
Ceausescu and his Romania, where
he existed not just in the public
sphere, but also as a member of every
family, including hers.
MADAME NIELSEN. From 2002
the Danish author Claus BeckNielsen worked under the name
Das Beckwerk and in 2011 changed
his name to Nielsen. He also writes
as Madame Nielsen. Among the
most praised of his novels are Claus
Beck-Nielsen (1963-2001), a biography
(Gyldendal 2003) and The Suicide
Mission (Gyldendal 2005), which led
to a nomination for The Nordic
Council Literature Prize, for
which he was nominated a second
time in 2014, for Mine Møder med de
danske forfattere (My Meetings with
Danish Authors). In 2014 Nielsen
published Den endeløse sommer (The
Endless Summer). Icelandic author
Sjón was “captivated by the book”
while other reviews have highlighted
Madame Nielsen as ”a formidable
writer of prose” (Information).
In 2016, Madame Nielsen
published Invasionen (The Invasion).

female cyclist. In 2012 she published

selling used women’s underwear. This
novel was closely followed by Snæbær
(Snow Berry) in 2013 and fordi at
(because of) in 2015. Sø also works as
a researcher for film and TV and is a
newspaper columnist.

most established authors. Her
books have been translated into
several languages and she has
received numerous awards and
scholarships, including the Danish
Arts Foundations three-year working
grant. Over the last few years she has
published the epic family saga, Køgekrøniken (The Køge Chronicle), which
follows a Danish family from 1938 to
the present.

Southern Europe to stay at their
uncle’s apartment, while he’s in
treatment for paranoia. They plan to
pay him a visit or two during their
vacation. There’s Rosa, the ‘cool’
sister, in control of her life, and love
life, especially after she started dating
Flora’s ex-boyfriend. Then there’s
Flora, the more timorous of the two,
who has a terrible memory and who
talks too much while she’s driving
about the stories by that deceased
author which she dreams of rewriting
- and that’s when she hits a woman on
a motorcycle. It might have been the
woman’s fault, but there’s the awful
possibility that Flora simply wasn’t
concentrating.
The motorcyclist shows up time and
again at the apartment, demanding
compensation, or maybe she’s there
for other reasons. She proves to be
just one of a long list of uncertainties
that surface in this compact,
atmospherically charged novel.

In the second book of the Christian
Falk detective series, forensic
psychiatrist Christian Falk must once
again delve into the labyrinth of a
deranged mind. When a 12-year-old
girl is found brutally murdered in
a garage in the provincial town of
Brabrand, Falk is sent to investigate
the scene. He is often called in to help
the police with murder cases, when
they suspect the perpetrator might
be clinically insane, but this time
there’s something ritualistic about the
killing. Among other things, the girl
had her face cut off, and a there’s a
crow wandering around in the garage.
Once the news gets out, the whole
town starts seeing crows, including
one of Christian’s psychiatric patients,
whose phobia of birds takes a sinister
turn. When another girl disappears,
Christian is under pressure to find the
man behind the ubiquitous birds.
Having spent most of her life in
Western Denmark, the forests and
sea have inspired the setting for
many of the murder cases in Inger
Wolf’s novels. Unlike many of the
Nordic crime writers, with their grim
portrayal of the private lives of their
detectives and their wide-angle social

“When I look around, I only see one
place in the media, where people are
starting to take a child’s reality seriously, namely children’s books,” says
Morten Dürr, who is recognized for
not shying away from such themes as
sorrow, bullying, fear and loneliness
in his books for children and young
adults. His latest graphic novel, Zenobia, in collaboration with illustrator
Lars Horneman, offers a short, poignant tale about the consequences of
war, told with very little text and bold
striking pictures, imbuing a sense of
reflection and remembrance for the
victims of the war.
The story starts with a small boat on
a blue sea, a large wave and Amina,
who is thrown overboard into the
cold water, so vast and empty that not
even her mother could find her. Her
mind starts to fade, and she begins
to dream, back to her life with her
mother and father in Syria, where she
played tag, and prepared food with
her family, and where her mother
told her stories about Zenobia, the
Warrior Queen from ancient Syria.
“If Zenobia could…so can you!” Her
mother always told her.
There, floating in the cold water,
Amina also thinks about the day
her father and mother went off to
the city and never returned. The
day her uncle came, when she was
able to flee her village, and the time
when they stood at the water’s edge,
waiting to board the boat. Her uncle
could not pay for them both. Amina
was sent off, towards a land without
war or soldiers – and then a wave
hit the boat. The water is a cold and
lonely place, where even the image of
Zenobia will eventually fade. In 2017
Zenobia won the Ministry of Culture’s
Children’s Books Award.
MORTEN DÜRR, born in 1968,
is a writer with a Masters in Radio
Journalism and a degree in Film and
Media. He has published a long series
of books for children and young
adults since 2004, and several have
been translated into other languages.
In 2008 he received the Ministry of
Education’s Writing Prize.

A growing list of
independent publishers
are building their lists
with foreign classics.
In this issue, Danish
Literary Magazine takes
a closer look at what
the Danish literary
scene can offer the
classics revival in terms
of literary gems and
support.

There is a growing list of independent
publishers building their lists with
foreign classics, and in Denmark,
Managing Director Jenny Thor at
Gyldendal Group Agency (GGA) says she’s
recently experienced a revival of classic
authors, such as Tom Kristensen.
(GGA) added five territories to the
author’s list, after the Dutch publisher
Lebowski published Kristensen’s
Hærværk (Havoc). Jenny says she’s
also seen a growing interest for Inger
Christensen, and there’s always a
curiosity for Karen Blixen.
Although many of the classic Danish
texts are now in the public domain, older
texts can be difficult for translators to
find and interpret. The Society for Danish
Language and Literature (DSL) offers
critical editions of the original texts, with
supplementary notes and clarification.
Since 1911, they have meticulously
annotated and published written
material throughout the history of the
Danish language, including historic,
scientific and literary texts, from the
Viking age up to today.

DSL also works on large-scale projects,
publishing them in collaboration with
publishers, such as the new history
of the Danish language with Aarhus
University Press, the new translation
of Saxo, Denmark’s history from the
Middle Ages (translated from the Latin
by Peter Fisher) with Oxford University
Press, along with a Classics Series with
Gyldendal. One of DSL’s more elaborate

with the University of Bergen, the first
digitalized critical edition of Holberg’s
collected works, all fully searchable and
equipped with meticulous commentary.
If Andersen is associated with fairy tales,
then Holberg is comedy. DSL’s director,
Karen Skovgaard-Petersen notes:
“Holberg is a writer who would fit in well
among the international writers of the
Enlightenment, but his writing covers
a broad spectrum and his novel about
Niels Klim is very fun. He could easily
find a place outside of Denmark.”
An increasing international awareness
of more well-known Danish classics
means that many names, such as
Henrik Pontoppidan, Herman Bang, J.P.
Jacobsen, have already been translated,
but there are many authors of equal
literary merit for the Danes, who have
never made the sufficient ‘noise’ to be
picked up internationally. Jesper Gehlert
Nielsen, who is part of the staff at DSL,
lists such names as Vilhelm Bergsøe
(Fra Piazza del Popolo), Jens Baggesen
(Labyrinten), Knud Sønderby (Midt i en
Jazztid / To Mennesker mødes), Tom
Kristensen (Livets Arabesk) or Peter
Nansen’s Brødrene Menthe (The Brothers
Menthe), which he describes as “an
early crime novel about a couple of
scammers. The plot is more action based
than many of the old Danish novels, so it
seems a little more modern (…) and then
there’s Steen Steensen Blicher’s short
stories, where you’re confronted with
an unreliable narrator whose version
of events doesn’t exactly correspond
to reality –a bit like Bryan Singer’s The
Usual Suspects.”
DSL has also collaborated with the The
Royal Library in Denmark to create an
online archive for Danish Literature (adl.
dk), where digital versions of many of
DSL’s editions are available, along with
information about their history, and
portraits of authors from all different
periods, which can be a useful tool in
determining which writers have had a
lasting impression on Danish literature.
Translators looking for information about
writers in Denmark are welcome to
contact the staff at DSL, who can offer
support and perhaps even a copy of the
material they need to get started.
The Danish Arts Foundation also
provides grants for translations of the
classics, and applications are open
throughout the year.

Independent German publisher Guggolz,
founded by Sebastian Guggolz in 2014,
was recently awarded the 2017 Kurt
Wolff award at the Leipzig Book Fair,
for their clever selection of new and
rediscovered books from Eastern and
Northern European countries. Among
their Scandinavian classics, they have
published Danish-Norwegian writer
Amalie Skram, and plan to publish
William Heinesen’s stories in 2018.
This year in August, they will publish
Himmerlandshistorier (Himmerland
Stories), by Danish Nobel Prize winner
Johannes V. Jensen (1873-1950). First
published in German by S. Fischer Verlag,
Jensen’s books were very popular during
the first half of the 20th century, but
today his work is nearly forgotten in
Germany.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year,
Iperborea, founded by Emilia Lodigiani
in Milan, aims to spread the knowledge
of Northern European literature. As
trailblazers for translated fiction in Italy,
they have been able to build a strong list
of contemporary authors, classics, Nobel
Prize winners, both unpublished and
newly translated, and the latest talents
of literary trends and movements. Over
the past two decades, their list of Danish
authors has included: Hans Christian
Andersen, Herman Bang, Karen Blixen,
Anders Bodelsen, Morten Brask, Stig
Dalager, Thorkild Hansen, J. P. Jacobsen,
Flemming Jensen, Svend Åge Madsen,
Kaj Munk, Jørn Riel, Peter Seeberg,
Henrik Stangerup, Janne Teller, Ole Wivel,
crime writers Olav Hergel and Dan Turell,
and in 2018, Ø (Island), by Faroese Siri
Ranva Hjelm.
Founded in 1996, Hungarian publishing
house Polar Könyvek survived the bookmarket turmoil following the political
changes in 1989, and began its bold
venture of publishing only Scandinavian
and Finnish fiction. Co-founders and
literary translators Judit Kertész and
Éva Pap sought support from the Danish
Arts Foundation from the beginning,
which enabled them to invite authors,
find translations, and build a strong
readership of not only adult readers of
foreign fiction, but also young adults for
writers such as Iselin C. Hermann. Their
current list of Danish authors includes
Karen Blixen, Jens Christian Grøndahl,
Henrik Nordbrandt, and an anthology
of H. C. Andersen. Hungarian readers
previously only knew Andersen on the
basis of 4-5 of his most famous tales,
based on the German translations, and
not the original Danish.
Sebastian writes, “Among his
publications there are three volumes of
beautiful stories from Jutland, the place
he grew up; stories which characterize
the people living there, the animals,
the landscape, and everyday life in the
small villages. It can seem like Jensen
tells many small stories, but read as a
kind of panorama, Himmerlandshistorier
is one huge human story. You get a
wonderful impression of rural life in the
early 20th century: a lost time. Besides
that, Jensen’s style of writing is totally
convincing. Every word has its place in
his sentences. We plan to publish all
three volumes.”
In March they will celebrate with a new
10 book-series called Luci (Lights),
which will include a new edition of Niels
Lyhne by J.P. Jacobsen (with a foreword
by Claudio Magris). “If I can quote our
founder, who first published it in 1995,”
says editorial director Cristina Gerosa,
“Niels Lyhne is one of the first great
literary characters of modern times who
embodies the nostalgia of a whole period.
He is the symbol of a crisis that, starting
from the end of 19th century, continues
to undermine the whole 20th century. It
is not a coincidence that Stefan Zweig
called him the Werther of his generation,
Thomas Mann recognized his debts to
this novel, and that Rainer Maria Rilke
considers it ‘an unforgettable book’.”
Judit points out that not all of their
Danish selections are necessarily rosy
depictions of Denmark, such as Knud
Romer’s Den som blinker er bange for
døden (The One Who Blinks Is Afraid
of Dying), which “discusses a question
that is unpleasant for the Danes, who
are usually models of tolerance the
world over. The topic of the book is the
discrimination the author’s German
mother faced in Denmark after WWII.
After all the great international attention
it received, we thought the book should
appear in present-day Hungary too.”

Internationally, critics are calling Ramsland’s
books Denmark’s answer to the sprawling family
sagas of Isabel Allende or John Irving, with a touch
of Danish irony, and a drunken grandfather or
two. In ÆG (Egg), Ramsland returns full force to
the high-spirited narrative style that first grabbed
readers with Hundehoved (Doghead).
By divine intervention, a poor
farming family comes into
possession of a magic golden
egg. It is a fertility egg, which has
been passed down the family for

to the present day. That is the story
grandfather starts telling, as he lies
in his greenhouse one day, a beer
balanced on his belly, chuckling to
himself. Yet there is an underlying

seriousness to his tales; the one
with the hooded mole catcher,
Thord, and his son Sten, the dwarf,
or the story of Freja, who escapes
the ravages of the plague on the
back of an ox, and is granted a child
by the power of the egg. He also tells
the story of the woman with the
eyes of a squirrel, who with the help
of magic fish and sprawling carp,
snares the lust of her gentleman.
MORTEN RAMSLAND, born 1971,
had his debut 1993 with an
acclaimed collection of poetry
entitled Når fuglene driver bort
(When the Birds Are Gone). In 2005,
his novel Hundehoved (Doghead),
earned him the coveted Danske
Bank Literature Prize, De Gyldne
Laurbær (The Golden Laurel)
and the Danish Broadcasting
Corporation’s Best Novel Award.
In 2010 Ramsland published
Sumobrødre (Sumo Brothers). He
is also the author of seven picture
books for children.

Support is provided to foreign publishing houses
and theatres that publish works translated from
Danish. Support is provided for translation costs
of fiction, non-fiction works of general cultural
interest, comics/graphic novels, children’s and
YA literature and theatre plays translated by
professionals. Support is also provided for
production costs in relation to illustrated works.
There are two annual application deadlines.
NORDIC TRANSLATION FUND: INTER-NORDIC TRANSLATIONS
The fund is open to Nordic publishers wishing to
publish a work translated from Danish to a Nordic
language. Support for translations into Danish
must be sought from within the country in which

behalf of Nordic Culture Point’s Culture and Art
Programme under the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Internordic production grants can be applied for
under the fund for Translation and Production.

DANISH LITERATURE ABROAD
LITERARY EXCHANGE FUND
Support may be provided to defray travel
expense in connection with a Danish author’s
/ illustrator’s participation in literary festivals,
readings and publication events abroad, if there is a
formal invitation to promote a publication. Support
may be provided to foreign authors travelling to
Denmark on the same basis. In addition travel
grants can also be awarded translators of Danish
literature to a meeting with the Danish author.
Danish authors and illustrators can apply for travel
costs in connection with residencies abroad and
Subsidies for literary events and marketing Danish
literature abroad. Applications for subsidies are
accepted from foreign publishers, diplomatic
representations abroad, cultural institutions
and others who wish to promote and increase
knowledge about Danish literature outside
Denmark.
Applications are processed as quickly as possible
within four weeks. Projects with a budget of more
than DKK 25,000 must expect a longer processing
time of approximately three months from the time of
application.
