Class Description: This class is an introductory course to the presentation program, Microsoft
PowerPoint. You will learn how to create and edit a PowerPoint presentation. The class will also look at
how to run a slide show and apply designs.
Class Length: 2 Hours

What is a presentation program?
A presentation program like Microsoft PowerPoint, allows you to
create a slideshow to incorporate in speeches or work
presentations.
Accessing Microsoft PowerPoint
1. Click the Start button in the taskbar at the bottom of your
screen.
a. The Start button will open.
2. Click on All Programs.
3. Select Microsoft Office.
4. Click on Microsoft PowerPoint 2007.
a. This will open the Microsoft PowerPoint program.

Creating a Title Slide
Once you have opened Microsoft PowerPoint, you can begin to
create your presentation. Microsoft PowerPoint opens up with a
blank presentation waiting for you. We are going to create
PowerPoint presentations about ourselves today.
1. Click in the “Click to add title” box and type your
name.
2. Click in the “Click to add subtitle” box to add a
subtitle if you would like.
Adding More Slides
Once you have a Title slide, you will need to create more slides for the rest of your information.
1. Go to the ribbon and find the Slides menu.
2. Click on New Slide.
a. A new slide will appear below your Title Slide.
3. Click on the arrow directly below the New Slide button.
a. This arrow opens up a menu of optional formats for your slides.
Adding Text to PowerPoint Slides
To add text in a PowerPoint slide, simply click on the boxes prompting
you to “Click to add title” or “Click to add text”. Click and type the
information you want to add to the slide.
1. Click on the “Click to add title” box at the top of your new slide.
2. Type “Hobbies” in the box.

Adding a bulleted list to PowerPoint Slides
Bulleted lists allow you to outline the information you want to
cover in your presentation on your slides. You rarely write out a
full sentence in Microsoft PowerPoint because you want to keep
your words to a minimum.
1. Click on the “Click to add text” box on the bottom of
your slide.
2. Type one of your hobbies on the first line.
3. Hit Enter.
4. Type in 3 more hobbies, hitting Enter after each one.
Slide Formats
You can choose from several different formats
when you are selecting new slides to add to
your presentation.
1. Click on the arrow directly below the
New Slide button.
a. This arrow opens up a menu of
optional formats for your
slides.
Creating a Two Content Slide
1. Click on the arrow directly below the
New Slide button.
a. This arrow opens up a menu of
optional formats for your
slides.
2. Click on the Two Content slide.
3. Click on the “Click to add title” box and
enter “Favorite Foods.”
4. Click on the first box with “Click to add text” and type in 4 of your favorite foods.

Adding Images or Clip Art to your Slides
In order to make your slides more attractive, you can add clip art or photos. Images make a PowerPoint
presentation more eye-catching for your audience. Be cautious of adding too much clip art because it
can also be distracting from your presentation.

1. Click on the Clip Art icon.
a. A Clip Art box will open at the right hand side of your screen.
2. In the Search for: box, type in “food”.
3. Click Go.
4. A long list of images will appear in the box below. You can use the scroll bar to move up and
down to look at the images. Choose a picture you like and double click on it.
a. The picture will be inserted in the space on your slide.
You can resize pictures and move them around to make your slide look more attractive.
Applying Designs to Your Presentation
By default, new slides have white backgrounds. To make your slideshow more colorful and interesting,
you can add designs to change the background of your slides.
1. Click on the Design Tab in the Ribbon.
a. There are a number of designs you can choose from under this tab. Simply use the
scroll bar to find a design you like and click on it once to activate it.

Formatting
Just like in Microsoft Word, you have the option to format the font of the text on your slides. Simply
select the text you wish to format and click on the formatting option.

Views
In PowerPoint, there are a number of different views in which you can work
or view the content you are creating.
Outline View – allows you to work with your presentation in outline
form with only text. This view is great for organizing and developing
your presentation.
To change to the following two views, you will use these buttons:
Slide Sorter View – allows you to view multiple slides simultaneously and get the overall picture
of the flow of the presentation.

Slide Show View - allows you to preview the presentation as it would be seen by your audience.
You can manually move from slide to slide by clicking with your mouse or using the Enter button
on your keyboard.
Saving a Presentation
Once you have created a presentation, it is important to save it so that you can view it or edit it at a
later time.
1. Go to the big Office Button in the top left hand corner and click on it.

2. Click on Save.
a. A Save dialog box will open.
3. In the File Name box, type in the name for your file (i.e. My file).
4. Click on My Documents in the left hand column to save it in your documents on your home
computer.
5. Click the Save button.
Printing a presentation
Now that you have created a presentation, you may want to print it.
1. Go to the big Office Button in the top left hand corner and click on it.
2. Click on Print.
a. A Print dialog box will open.
3. Click the Print button.
