Mission Statement
“We, the parish community of Our Lady
of the Valley Catholic Church, inspired by
the Holy Spirit, and nourished by the Holy
Eucharist, are a community of faith.
We invite all God’s people to celebrate
His love through participation in liturgy,
prayer, service and fellowship.
We are committed to on-going faith
formation for people of all ages.
We value the diverse gifts we have been
given and freely share our time, talent,
and treasure to minister to the needs of
all God’s people.”
Year of Mercy
How appropriate today's Gospel for this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the
"breakfast" Jesus provides ("a charcoal fire
with fish on it and bread") and the number
of fish in Peter's net ("one hundred fiftythree") (John 21:11-12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests
that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the
Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the "water" of
our humanity; to be caught in the "net" of our death; to be
"roasted" in his Passion on the fire of suffering. Saint Jerome
claims that "one hundred fifty-three" represents the full number
of known species of fish, signifying that the Church's "net" has
room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-indiversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having
received God's mercy as "the beating heart of the Gospel," may
the Church - we - "pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God
who went out to everyone without exception" (Misericordiae
Vultus, 12).

Third Sunday of Easter
April 10, 2016
Today’s Readings
Scripture Commentary
First Reading: Brought before the Sanhedrin, the
apostles give witness to Jesus Christ.
(Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41).
Psalm: I will praise you, Lord, for you have
rescued me (Psalm 30).
Second Reading: In his vision John sees all in
heaven and on earth give honor and glory to the one
on the throne and to the Lamb (Revelation 5:11-14).
Gospel: Jesus appears to the disciples by the sea of
Tiberias (John 21:1-19 [1-14]).
REDEMPTION
Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was
arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus.
Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the
name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in
proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the
Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John's vision
in the second reading from the book of Revelation
shows us the company we keep when we have faith in
the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures,
"countless in number" from "heaven, earth, under the
earth, in the sea; everything in the
universe" (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and
majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast
to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other
apostles at the time of Jesus' arrest, trial, and
crucifixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed
so completely!

Treasures From Our Tradition
From the earliest centuries, we know that some
Christian women desired to vow themselves to a
celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means
everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others
wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth
century, the church was celebrating the "Consecration
of Virgins," a rite performed by the bishop, and
involving a "veiling" of the woman. It was looked upon
as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in
the culture of the day a woman's status in society was
linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the
consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the
prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on
her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave
the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to
the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone
who tried to turn her from her commitment.
Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in
the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second
Vatican Council directed that it be revived and
restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women
have embraced this form of consecrated life.

Beloved Saint Biography
SAINT STANISLAUS
Feast Day: April 11
Stanislaus was born of noble parents on July 26 near
Cracow, Poland. He was educated and ordained at
Gnesen. He became a preacher and became a much
sought after spiritual adviser. He was successful in his
reforming efforts, and in 1072 was named Bishop of
Cracow. He incurred the enmity of King Boleslaus the
Bold when he denounced the King's cruelties and
injustices and especially his kidnapping of the
beautiful wife of a nobleman. When Stanislaus
excommunicated the King and stopped services at the
Cathedral when Boleslaus entered, Boleslaus himself
killed Stanislaus while the Bishop was saying Mass in
a chapel outside the city on April 11. Stanislaus has
long been the symbol of Polish nationhood. He was
canonized by Pope Innocent IV in 1253 and is the
principle patron of Cracow.

NECESSARY
Grace is necessary to salvation, free will is equally
so; but grace in order to give salvation, free will in
order to receive it.

Faith - Questions and Answers About the Catholic Faith
John V. McGuire, C.Ss.R
What is the origin of the Catholic prayer, the Hail
Mary?
T
his is a prayer that developed in the Church
over a period of time. We have evidence
that by the eleventh century, the Gospel
phrase: “Hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with
thee, blessed art thou among women” was used as a
prayer of salutation to Mary. By the fourteenth
century, the words of Elizabeth were added together
with the name, “Jesus.” “Blessed art thou among
women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.”
At some later date, probably in the sixteenth century,
the “Holy Mary, etc.” was added.
The prayer in its present form was
recommended for general use by the Council of Trent
in the sixteenth century. (cf. CCC 2676)

Pro-Life Ministry
Stephen Ministry
God's love was revealed to us in this way: God sent His
only begotten Son into the world so that we might have
life through Him. 1 Jn 4:9
Reflection: The bible teaches us that
God is love and it likewise teaches us that
this love leads to life. Love always gives
life; it never takes it. That is why Christians
are pro-life.
Prayer: Father, thank You for revealing Your love in
Christ, Who is life and gives life. May we be immersed
in that love so that we too may always be defenders of
life.
A life crisis can turn your world upside down.
When an event shakes up your world, you can either
let it hurt you or help you. If you would like help in
turning a life crisis into an opportunity of growth and
faith, a Stephen Minister is ready to help you.
If you or someone you know could benefit from
the confidential, one-to-one Christian care of a
Stephen Minister, call the Parish Office at 635-4536,
press 8 when prompted to leave a voicemail. Your
message is confidential and will only be received by
one of the trained Stephen Ministry Leaders.

Corporal Works of Mercy: Mercy in Action (Booklet)
Msgr. Richard Atherton
Feeding the hungry and thirsty, clothing the naked,
housing the homeless, visiting the imprisoned and the
sick and burying the dead – Pope Francis wants us to
stop and think again, especially during the Year of
Mercy. Are these things I can do, or are they for others
to get on with? What good do they do? Actions of
mercy are often terribly ordinary and doable. Fr.
Atherton guides us through the spiritual and practical
matters that love asks of all Christians.
Lesson 3 – The Mission
The mission of Saint Faustina consisted of three tasks:
1) Reminding the world of the truth of our faith
revealed in the Holy Scripture about the merciful love
of God towards every human being, even the greatest
sinner.
2) Entreating God’s mercy for the whole world by
veneration of the image of Divine Mercy, celebration
of the feast of Divine Mercy, praying at the hour of
Divine Mercy (3 PM), and spreading devotion to the
Divine Mercy.
3) Initiating the apostolic movement of the Divine
Mercy which undertakes the task of proclaiming and
entreating God’s mercy for the world and strives for
perfection in the spirit of childlike confidence in God
expressed in the fulfillment of His will and the attitude
of mercy towards one’s neighbor.
Quotations are from the booklet: The Divine Mercy, pg. 5
(available at the Lighthouse Kiosk in the Narthex).

safeTALK Training
Friday, April 22, 9AM-Noon,
Holy Family Center
Alive in Christ
safeTALK is a half-day training in suicide
alertness. It helps participants recognize a person
with thoughts of suicide and connect them with
resources who can help them in choosing to live.
Participants don’t need any formal preparation to
attend the training. Anyone 15 or older who wants to
make a difference can learn the safeTALK steps.
Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t want
to die. Instead, they are looking for a way to work
through the pain in their lives. Through their words
and actions, they usually invite others to help them in
making a choice for life. safeTALK teaches
participants to recognize these invitations, engage the
person with thoughts of suicide, and connect them
with resources to help them be safer from suicide.
safeTALK participants will learn to:
Notice and respond to situations where suicide
thoughts may be present.
Recognize that invitations for help are often
overlooked.
Move beyond the common tendency to miss,
dismiss, and avoid suicide.
Apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen,
KeepSafe.
Know community resources and how to connect
someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further
suicide-safer help.
There is a registration fee of $8. To register, call
625-4536, press 8 when prompted and leave a
message including your name and phone number.
Registrations will be accepted until Wednesday,
April 20.
