SAMMY SUN’S NEWS Fifth Edition Autumn 1- 2016 News for children by the children. LOVELY LOCKERBIE On the 3rd of October 30 children from Year 6 set off on a journey to Lockerbie Manor. Lockerbie Manor is a place just over the border of Scotland. Lockerbie Manor is a school residential out bounds area where children can express their inner selves. We went with Mrs Postle, Miss Johnson and Mr Barrett. As well as the welcoming Lockerbie Manor staff. We went to gain more independence, to challenge ourselves and to try new things. AWESOME ACTIVITIES There were a lot of different activities for us to do and they each lasted for approximately one and a half hours. When we did our activities we got split up into three groups of ten. The first activity that my group did was the climbing. When we did the climbing we had to wear a harness and a helmet. When it was your turn to climb you had to strap yourself to a rope with a karabiner. A karabiner is basically a hook for those who don’t know. When you were climbing up the climbing wall some found it tricky and some didn’t but the other people encouraged the ones who were on the climbing wall to go higher. When you wanted to come down you had to shout the secret code word which was marshmallows. When the instructor said to the belier (a belier is the person who holds the climbers ropes) ‘Let them down,’ the belier pulled the lever and the climber slowly made a descent to the ground. The second activity was low ropes at night time. First we went through the forest and went to the obstacle course. Charlie brought us through the course then we got in pairs and we completed the course. Charlie told us to take it in turns on an obstacle. Our group were guarding so if we fell then we would be fine. Our groups took it in turns to do the whole course. After that we did a competition. Then we went on the Trust V. The Trust V is a V of string on trees and we had to balance on each other and get as far through the V as we could. That was a competition too. Everyone had quite a few turns on the zip wire after we had listened to the safety instructions. An instructor showed us the three types of fencing and taught us to use the equipment safely. We had to put on a helmet with iron rings at the front. In groups we walked to the archery range and sat down on the bench. The instructor told us the instructions especially if an animal walked onto the range. During the abseiling activity there were two abseiling walls. We had to go around the back and were connected to the ropes. The instructor held onto the green rope to keep us safe. When we got to the bottom everyone had to do the dab (a special pose) to protect our eyes so that the rope didn’t hit us. The mountain biking was hard because we had to complete an obstacle course and some people needed a lot of practise here. If you were good enough you could go on the difficult trail which had gravel turns and a dodgy log. For the shooting we went in a special room and used lead pellets to shoot at the target using two different types of rifles. The blind trail involved wearing a helmet in case you fell off an obstacle. There were ropes around the outside of the course so you didn’t crash and you had a partner to guide you. Mrs Postle wanted a turn and Ellie and Ailsa guided her around. She got covered in mud because they led her through the tunnel of misfortune! The Children’s Thoughts Fletcher: He enjoyed the zip wire because he enjoyed going fast. His favourite activity was abseiling. He liked the spacious room. Seamus: He liked the climbing because he could push himself with the support of his friends. His favourite activity was abseiling. He liked chatting with his friends. Rachel: She liked the rooms and the food. Her favourite activity was the zip wire. She liked the room because it had its own private and clean bathroom. Ellie: She enjoyed the zip wire because she liked the up ladder. She liked the private bathroom too. Aiden: He liked the rooms because with his friends it was fun. His favourite activity was rock climbing. Riley: He liked the zip wire and the blind trail because it was muddy and fun. He enjoyed rifle shooting because he was better at it than he was before. Holly: Her favourite was the zip wire because she felt like she was flying. Article by James Bland, Christopher Sharrocks and Milo Worsley (Year 6) Year 1 Eureka Trip! The Bolton School Chess Tournament On Thursday 13th October Claypool attended their first ever chess tournament. It was held at Bolton School Junior Boys’ division. From personal experience, I can’t say that it was the greatest ever triumph for Claypool but at least we all came out with a smile on our faces! In the first round, Edward and Rebecca won (It’s good ), Grace drew and the rest of us lost (Oh wait it’s not good). In the second round, Jacob and Marcus won, Edward drew and the rest of us lost again. That was unfortunate. 11 of us attended the tournament and we were able to have 2 teams – Claypool A and Claypool B. 6 schools attended altogether and we came fourth. Bolton School Boys won. Our ambassadors were: Jacob Johnston, James Thornborrow-Jones, Kirk Ammekk, Edward Zalane-Correa, Rebecca Zalane-Correa, Grace Nicol, Marcus Garside, Sam Willder, Lucas Stevenson, Thomas Atkinson and of course me, Aleksander Clayden! We could never have done this if it wasn’t for Mr Correa and Miss Redfern, our amazing teachers! Quotes Jacob: “Loved every minute of it!” James: “It was an exhilarating experience like no other.” Marcus: “It was the fluffy faces of cats that propelled us to a higher state of excellence.” Kirk: “Chess comes as chess is… And chess is awesome!” Thomas: “I enjoyed it all because there was never a dull moment.” Grace: “I felt really proud because I got one draw, one loss and I know that everyone tried their hardest.” Edward: “I liked going because I like playing chess. I definitely know I’d like to go again!” Rebecca: “I felt proud about representing the school, but that feeling twisted into anxiety when the time came to play the rounds.” Year 1 went on an amazing school trip to Eureka on Tuesday 11th October 2016. Eureka is a science museum for children. They all travelled there by coach early in the morning. At about10.30 Year 1 arrived at Eureka ‘WHAT ON EARTH!’’ From 10:45 until 11:15 the children had a self-guided hour in the toy bank, shop, house and garage. At 11:15-11:45 it was time for lunch. From 11:45-12:15 it was time for the children to play outside. At 12:15-12:30 the children organised their bags and coats. From 12:30 until 1:30 it was time for a self-guided hour in the’ All About Me’ gallery. At 1:30until 2:00 was discovery time to explore the galleries. (Year 5) Article by Erin Hughes and Emily Davies (Year 5) Terrific Teeth Assembly There was a brilliant class assembly on Thursday 29th September. Year 4 did an amazing assembly about taking care of your teeth and being healthy. It took place on the stage in the hall watched by all of the other classes, staff and parents. The assembly showed people how to learn about taking care of teeth. It helped Year 4 practise the names of the different types of teeth and what is healthy and unhealthy about caring for your teeth. It was good to develop our performance skills and talking in front of an audience. First of all Archie introduced the assembly. Ella was the dentist and she had to check Finn’s teeth. Finn tried to escape but Ella wouldn’t let him! The main message was that prevention is better than cure. Next in the supermarket Charlotte passed the food to Sam and Sam put the food in the bag. Sam was buying the healthy food and James was buying the unhealthy food such as: biscuits, chocolate and sweets. Then Ella shouted “Have we any idea of the damage you will do to your teeth? All gooey and sweet! Just who do you think you are?” After that at someone’s house charlotte hid some sweets and Grace H told her off! Then we sang the fun song called “Clean Our Teeth! Philip was an athlete who ran around the stage. Mia talked about carbohydrates, Ewan about fats, Alfie S about fibre, vitamins and minerals and Aidan about protein. We learnt that carbohydrates give us energy, protein helps us to grow, fats give us energy, vitamins, minerals and fibre help keep us healthy and aid digestion. Erin, Rebecca, Gabriella, Lois, Hannah sang ‘Oh I wish I looked after my teeth,’ which is a really good poem. Grace C and JJ joined in too by speaking about looking after their teeth. Inshra told everyone about the message of the assembly. Anna and Charlotte finished with a prayer. Children’s Thoughts “I enjoyed being a dentist because i was bossy.” (Ella) “I enjoyed the play, my words and lines.” (Fern) “It was fun and exciting, I felt nervous and confident.”(Amelia) “I enjoyed it when I was a tooth because I liked being a cute character.”(Jesse) “I enjoyed the assembly because everyone took part.”(Hannah) “I enjoyed the cool assembly because teeth are my favourite subject.”(Lukas) “I enjoyed it because it was so so so so funny!”(Beatrice) “I was very nervous but very excited.”(Grace C) Parents Comments Fabulous assembly!
