NORTH AWARD: JAMES MAHONEY, University
of Florida landscape architecture student, designed a shared lawn area featuring diverse native
vegetation rather than traditional lifeless turf.
James likes the idea of putting back the nature
displaced by housing development and would like
to see less water-intensive landscapes in Florida.
His design incorporates an enjoyable short stroll
through a variety of trees, shrubs and flowering
ground covers. He is especially proud of the little
Mahoney
meadow in the design and enjoyed incorporating
native grasses and wildflowers to show that you can have a beautiful
low-water-use landscape without turf. He focused on selecting
plants that provide significant food and habitat value for the wild
creatures, including birds and butterflies.
CENTRAL AWARD: ANDREA PENUELA, University of Florida landscape architecture student,
submitted a “wetwalk,” an interpretive observation boardwalk extending from an existing trail,
suitable for creating a beautiful wild lands experience in an urban area. The design incorporates
a diversity of native water loving trees as well as
shrubs, ferns, flowering aquatics and ground covers that provide habitat for a variety of fish, mammals and insects, including butterflies, bees and
Penuela
moths. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Andrea moved
to Orlando with her family at the age of 7. She spent a lot of time
hiking in the Shingle Creek area in south Orange County and developed a strong interest in natural Florida. That and a course in riverine ecology have inspired her design.
SOUTH AWARD: SABINE MARCKS, Landscape
Design Associates, submitted a residential plan
that packs in a lot of native palm trees to create a
tropical look favored by many Florida residents.
The design includes an artificially created wetland
transitioning via a raised berm to a pineland-inspired planting. A boardwalk and deck allow upclose viewing of plant communities and access for
maintenance. Native flowering ground covers
provide nectar for pollinators and a natural hedge
Marcks
along the boundary provides wildlife value and
privacy. Sabine also won the 2014 competition for North Florida.
She got a project as a result and decided to enter again in 2015.

effective marketing for native plants
8:30-9:40am Thursday april 9, Extension Services Building
$25 or FrEE for Fann members and show exhibitors
Designed for growers, garden centers and landscape professionals, this session brings together
marketing experts from academia and the for-profit world to discuss how to best promote our
plants and businesses.
Includes the following three units:
adding Value by promoting novel plant a‫﬙‬ributes
InSTrUCTOr Hayk Khachatryan, Univ. of Florida
Hayk will talk about new marketing research focused on how novel plant attributes such as
origin, production methods and pollinator attraction, can improve perceived value, meet
new market needs, differentiate products and justify higher price points. Learn about the
impacts of in-store signage, novel plant attributes, what consumers view in the retail outlet, and how different marketing strategies can help attract customers. This information
can help growers who are interested in adding value to their product lines, and also retailers interested in developing new in-store promotions.
WORLD LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE MONTH (WLAM) celebrates
landscape architecture and designed public and private spaces. Established by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), WLAM
connects each of ASLA’s 49 chapters across the United States with a landscape architect or organization in a foreign country. Each chapter will
collaborate with a student, organization or firm dedicated to landscape
architecture with Skype and social media. ASLA is promoting career discovery to students across the county, with special outreach to underrepresented minorities. Each ASLA member will receive a wallet-sized card
with “Design by a Landscape Architect” on it to take pictures of it at designed spaces to share on social media.
