Parent Background Information:
The focus of our 3rd Grade Social Studies Curriculum is how important US historical
figures have worked to overcome obstacles and enact change. Susan B. Anthony is a great
example of a person who overcame many obstacles in an effort to enact change. She was born in
1820, a time when most women did not receive any education. However, she was born into a
Quaker family who believed in equal rights for all, no matter what gender or race you
were. She received a quality education, and used this education to further the causes she
believed in.
Susan B. Anthony worked for a number of causes, including abolition, temperance
and suffrage. She worked with important people like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and
Frederick Douglass. In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in a presidential election.
She received a fine instead of a jail sentence, but refused to pay the fine. Susan B.
Anthony worked for women’s rights her entire life, never marrying or having children.
However, she died 14 years before the passage of the 19th amendment, which gave women
the right to vote. She is remembered as a woman of diligence who spent her life working
for civil rights for all.
