3rd Grade Social Studies Social Studies Newsletter Susan B. Anthony Edition Dear Parents, The purpose of this newsletter is to give you an overview of what your child will be learning during our current unit of study in social studies. Please take a moment to look over the different sections of this newsletter. You will see sample questions, important terms to know, and some extension activities you can do at home. Parent Background Information: The focus of our 3rd Grade Social Studies Curriculum is how important US historical figures have worked to overcome obstacles and enact change. Susan B. Anthony is a great example of a person who overcame many obstacles in an effort to enact change. She was born in 1820, a time when most women did not receive any education. However, she was born into a Quaker family who believed in equal rights for all, no matter what gender or race you were. She received a quality education, and used this education to further the causes she believed in. Susan B. Anthony worked for a number of causes, including abolition, temperance and suffrage. She worked with important people like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Frederick Douglass. In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in a presidential election. She received a fine instead of a jail sentence, but refused to pay the fine. Susan B. Anthony worked for women’s rights her entire life, never marrying or having children. However, she died 14 years before the passage of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. She is remembered as a woman of diligence who spent her life working for civil rights for all.
