In the 1871 census Mary Jane was working with her mother as an assistant confectioner in their business
which was at 5 Swan Street, East Harling. (Swan Street was named after its 16th century inn, The Swan).
At this time Cecil Simon was 19 and a bricklayer’s labourer, his brother Robert Simon had left home.
By the 1881 census the family had moved to Cambridge where Jane's sons now married, were living.
Mary Jane was 31 and still single, Jane and her daughter lived at 14 Northampton Street in the St Giles
district of Cambridge, and they had a lodger called Thomas Greathead, aged 24 from Lincoln.

At the time of his marriage Thomas was a postman, as was his father William.
On his son Arthur William's birth certificate Thomas was a journeyman (bricklayer) in 1864, living at 7
King Street, New Town, Deptford, London. In 1869 he is found in the Criminal Register for 1791 -1892.
Dated 3 December 1869 - He was found guilty and imprisoned for fraud against the Post Office - Millbank
Prison, London. By the 1881 census Thomas was a builder’s labourer married to Harriett and living at 10,
Burleigh Place, Cambridge. (No marriage reference can be found but she is stated as being his wife) No
death certificate or reference can be located for Emily Filby. There is reference that Thomas was killed on
one register of his death, but this is not on the certificate. Their son Fred went missing from all records
with his mother after the 1871 census.
There is no reference to Emily's death.
By the 1881 census Thomas was a builder’s labourer married to Harriet and living at 10 Burleigh Place,
Cambridge.

Notes on William Arthur Filby
Christened William Arthur, and born at 7, King Street, New Town, Deptford, London, on 13th January,
1864, his mother was Emily Filby. A scholar until he was 16, then a tailor's assistant living with his
father, Thomas, his brother Fred, and his step-mother, Harriett, at 10, Burleigh Place, Cambridge, (1881
census) having moved north a few years earlier. There is no record of either his mother's death or that of
his brother, Frederick. He was a regular soldier (regiment unknown) living in Edmonton, London, when
he married Alice at Cambridge, in the December quarter of 1896. Alice was born in 1866, and after their
marriage they lived in Edmonton, London. He became known as Arthur and was a sergeant who served
in The Boer War.
Notes for Alice Burbage:
Alice was a good needlewoman and worked for big houses whilst in the London area, repairing
tapestries, she later returned to this work at the University colleges when living in Cambridge. For the
latter part of her life she was deaf resulting from a serious Influenza infection. In 1934, just two years
after Arthur's death, Alice died, following a 15 year fight against breast cancer, she was aged 68.

Notes on Frederick George Donald Thomas Filby
Frederick George Donald Thomas Filby moved to 12, Mill Street, Cambridge about 1908. He joined the
army (under age) at 16, and served in the First World War (1914-1918)
After the war he became a buyer of food and wines for a college in Cambridge having worked up to this
position. He married Evelyn Vail in late 1923. They had no children and divorced in 1940. He then
moved to Enfield for a short time, to live with his sister, Margery. In the early part of the Second World
War he moved to Clacton, where he worked for the M.O.D.
After the war he stayed in Clacton and opened his own betting business at Frinton-on-sea. He died
from cancer at St. Luke's Hospital, Paddington, following voluntary care and a trial of preventative
cancer drug treatment at Manor House Research Hospital, London. Probate was £769 between his
siblings, Ernest George Filby, and Margery Willers.

OBITUARY
On April 3rd 1967 after an accident at the corner of Danum Road and Carr House Road, Mr E G Filby
sustained fatal injuries as he was knocked off his bicycle crossing the road in front of a van. Mr Filby was
returning to work after a long break to work his last year before retirement. He was 63 years old. A service
and interment at Rose Hill Cemetery, Friday, April 7th, 1967 at 2.00pm.
