Welcome to English 2! This year we will be focusing on how we as individuals can
impact and shape the world we live in. We will be working with Common Core State
Standards for Language Arts by practicing and developing our reading, writing,
listening, and speaking skills in order to try and tackle the following Essential
Questions:
o What role do reading and writing play in our daily lives?
o What do heroes look like?
o How have heroes evolved over time to meet the demands of a
constantly changing world?

Expectations
While in C-9 we will practice being:
o Positive
o Productive
o Professional
We will practice embodying these three characteristics at all times while in class. This
will not only help us enjoy our time together in class, but also help us all be the best
human beings we can be.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
Consequences
Consequences for failing to meet the class expectations will be:
o First Offense: Warning
o Second Offense: Class Detention and Parent Contact
o Third Offense: Referral and Parent Contact
______________________________________________________________________________________________
Grades
Grades will be updated throughout the school year on Power School. I will do my best
to make sure that assignments are updated in a timely manner. However for larger
assignments such as essays, please allow a longer time before asking about your
grade or score seeing as how these assignments are more demanding to grade.
Your grade in this class will be based on the following:
o 10% Discussion and Silent Reading/Bonus Points
o 15% Reading and Vocabulary/Grammar Quizzes
o 25% Reading Response Logs, Journals, and other short assignments
o 40% Essays, Tests, and Projects
o 10% Rough Drafts/Revision Assignments

Absences
If you are legally absent (the office has excused your absence):
o Look at the class website to see what you missed in class.
o Consult the Absent Bin located in the classroom to get assignments and
handouts you may have missed. *Note: Most assignments will be able to
be printed from the class website*
o Consult classmates if you have questions before asking the teacher so
as not to waste valuable class time.
o You will have as many days as you are absent to complete work for full
credit.

Late Work
It is your responsibility to turn in assignments the day they are due, and to complete
all work to the best of your ability. Late work will be accepted the day after it is
due for 70% credit.
*Clayton Valley Charter High School has a Failure Free Zone. This means that if
you do not have work finished the day that it is due, you need to come in either before
school, at brunch, at lunch, or after school to complete the assignment on the same
day.
For essays or major projects, late work will be deducted a third of a letter grade per
day that it is late. For example, if you have an essay that you turn in two days late, the
best you can get is an A- on the essay which equates to two thirds of a letter grade
deducted, one third of a grade per day.
If you have an assignment that you would like to turn in late, you will need to fill out
a Missing Work Log, located next to the Absent Bin, and attach it to the top of the late
assignment.
Missing Quizzes/Tests
If you are absent and miss a test or a quiz it is your responsibility to come and make
up the assignment the day following your absence. If you do not make up the missing
test or quiz your grade will result in a zero.
I understand that at times life gets in the way of school, if you are ever feeling that
you need more time for an assignment please do not hesitate to come talk to me.

Tardy Policy
You must be in your desk, working on the assignment posted on the board by the time
the last bell rings. Out of your seat, talking to a friend, or in the doorway do not
count as present.
o First Offense: Warning
o Second Offense: Class Detention and Parent Contact
o Third Offense: Referral and Parent Contact

Bathroom Policy
At the beginning of each quarter you will be issued two bathroom passes that you
may use. You may not use the bathroom the first or last 10 minutes of class, however
should you need to use the bathroom during class time you will need to:
o Fill out your own pass, and present it to me for a signature at an
appropriate time
o Sign out using the Bathroom Log at the front of the classroom
o Sign in upon your return and quietly get back on task
If you do not use your bathroom passes you may turn them in for extra credit at the
end of the quarter.
