The Popularity of
Music Downloading
From SBC Internet Services
M
MUSIC DOWNLOADING IS RAPIDLY BECOMING ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR ONLINE ACTIVITIES.
Americans downloaded more than 200 million music tracks in 2004. Because of this surge in popularity and because of the size of music files,
high-speed Internet service has become a necessity for music lovers. In the past year alone, music-downloading sites have flooded the Web,
giving Internet users more opportunities to access their favorite tunes inexpensively and legally. Broadband services, like SBC Yahoo! DSL, allow
Internet users to instantly download their favorite songs and to store them on their computer or portable music player within seconds. Now
more than ever, broadband Internet service is an essential tool for downloading quality music files.

I MPORTANCE OF A HIGH-SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION FOR MUSIC-DOWNLOADING
Because most songs are several megabytes in size, bandwidth is a crucial element in music downloading. With
SBC Yahoo! DSL users download songs much more quickly than with a regular dial-up connection. High-speed
Internet services, such as SBC Yahoo! DSL, work with all music-downloading services — which then enable portable
music players and CD burners. For more information, visit www.sbc.yahoo.com.

According to a February 2005 Pew Internet & American Life Survey, more than 22 million adults
aged 18 and older own iPods or MP3 players.
›Almost one in five of those under the age of 30 have iPods or MP3
players; 14 percent of adults between the ages of 30 and 39 own them; and 14 percent of
adults between the ages of 40 and 48 own them.
›Those who use the Internet are four times as likely as non-Internet
users to have iPods or MP3 players, because Internet users can get much of the
music they enjoy online.
›Broadband access is strongly associated with ownership of portable
music devices. In addition, 23 percent of those with broadband at home have iPods or MP3
players, compared with 9 percent of those who have dial-up connections.
›More than 30 percent of those with broadband available at home and at work own portable music players.
INTERNET RADIO
The Internet has changed how we shop, find information and listen to the radio. Online stations, like Yahoo!
LAUNCHcast radio, have revolutionized the way many people around the world listen to music. Internet radio
allows music lovers to access an abundance of different kinds of music via their computer. A recent Parks
Associates study found that 56 percent of Internet users listen to Internet radio on their computers. One of the
many benefits of Internet radio is that listeners can access the music from wherever they are in the world,
whenever they choose. Internet audio players have control panels so that users can play, pause, fast-forward
and rewind at will. Internet radio is also great for discovering new music, reading the latest music news or
even purchasing CDs.
